Migraine Prophylaxis With Ranexa

Updated

I recently started on Ranexa 500 mg bid. I have noticed that my migraines, previously triggered by exercise, wine, chocolate, have ceased. Has anyone else had this experience?

Ranexa contains the active ingredient Ranolazine, it is used to treat angina or other causes of irregular heartbeat.

I am not a doctor, but my theory is that all those things that you mentioned can also possibly have an effect on your heartbeat, this could mean that when they did that, you weren't getting enough oxygen and that can result in severe migraine like headaches.

Using this medication, so you now have a better rhythm could mean that they are no longer causing this problem.

I have been taking Ranexa for angina for the last year and a half, and I have also noticed that Ranexa seems to have been preventing my previously frequent migraines. After my heart attack, I was on as much as 1000 mg bid. But because I was on a number of other medicines as well, I thought one of them might have been the protection from my migraines. In particular I thought it might be my Beta-blocker Metoprolol. But just this week I have come to the conclusion that it is definitely the Ranexa that has been preventing the migraines. I have been slowly weening off of the Ranexa (under my Dr's supervision), as my angina has subsided. I have taken only 250 mg every other day for the last week, in preparation of stopping completely next week. But I have noticed that I have begun getting the migraines again (and hava also had some mild angina). I have not changed the dose of beta-blockers however. I now plan to ask my Dr. if I can instead remain on 250 mg of Ranexa daily. (I wanted to go off of Ranexa if possible because of the uncomfortable side effect of constipation) but at this lower dose, I seem to be protected from both angina and migraines and am not experiencing significant constipation either. I am glad to find other people have experienced the same phenomenon.
