Midrin is a vasoconstrictor (shrinks the blood vessels) specifically in the brain for migraines, but has allegedly been blamed for cardiovascular problems, and even the generic form is not available to legal drugstores. I've sworn by this medicine for my migraines the past 30 years, and I'm pretty frightened by this news, because I carry a bottle with me everywhere I go, just in case a migraine strikes. The nasal and under-the-tongue migraine meds prescribed in the last 10 years give me heart palpitations, shortness of breath, etc., but the Midrin did NOT, so I've got to find something, or decide if this life is worth living without a medication that has helped me all of these years. My migraines are fewer apart than my younger years, but just as strong as they were as a child. Midrin was the only medication that worked for me when it was marketed in '70's as a migraine med. I usually have "auras" preceding the actual migraine, and when I take one or two Midrins, lie down or sit in a dark, quiet room, it takes care of the migraine...an hour later...I take one more, and I'm OK the rest of the day, but I often have a few days in a row with this cycle, and have to do that routine. I've tried EVERYTHING on the market, especially when I heard a few years ago that the makers of this medicine planned on stopping the manufacturing of Midrin and the generic forms. What are we going to do??? Perhaps, I should become a Chemist or beg for the exact, measurable compounds from the company who manufactures this drug. This drug that has allowed me to want to live, because I could, at least control "most" of the migraines I've had my entire life, with the exception of age 10 to 24. I've NEVER known what it must be like to live one's life without that debilitating pain, nausea, vomiting, inability to even "see" or focus precluding the onset of pain, known as the "aura", which also consists of seeing V-shaped lines in my field of vision. My neck muscles, and up the back of my head tighten up and radiate such pain that it instantly causes nausea and diarrhea... without the Midrin...the migraine begins, and lasts for as much as 3 days. Something that you may find of interest, is, I diagnosed myself in 2006 with Multiple Sclerosis, and medical tests were done to prove my self-diagnosis, and confirmed by two Neurologists in SC and a Neurosurgeon at Wake Forest, NC. My migraines have slowed down considerably since taking my daily sub-Q injections of Copaxone. I started out with Rebif, but had to switch to Copaxone because of elevated liver enzymes. I am going to be 55 tomorrow (Jan 21), and probably could have been spared many migraines over the last 20 years, had I studied to be a doctor and not nursing, although, the doctor who ordered the MRI of my brain (or anyone else at a local pain clinic) didn't even take the time to read my MRI report. It was shoved into my file and forgotten. I asked his nurse to let me read my lab reports, and there it was, as plain as the nose on her very red face.... "too many lesions to even count in this patient's brain, and most likely has MS". I immediately fired that pain clinic, obtained a spinal tap from another neurologist that also concluded the MS diagnosis, sought my long-time friend and neurologist, Dr. J. Saad, and she sent me to Wake Forest for one more confirmation of the MS, and began treatments right away. Dr. Saad has been taking very good care of me, and she's the only doctor I trust in the south, besides my best friend and Chiropractor, Dr. Gregg Howell in Inman, SC. I will bookmark this site and update anyone needing help to find a replacement for our Midrin medication.
Yours truly,
Gail M

Please please please tell me where I can get a substitute for generic midrin/epidrin??? I have cleared out the stock at four pharmacies in town but they can't get anymore. Is it the dichloral part of Midrin that works or the isometheptene (sedative or vaso-constrictor)? Isn't there ANY other vaso constrictor out there that isn't related to Maxalt?

MIDRIN gets rid of a LOT of my migraines if I take it early. Without it I have to fall back on butalbital, excedrin + no doz + ibuprofen, and vicodin. (Just making sure I don't get too much acetaminophin when I load up on painkillers is a challenge. I know not to take more than 4,000 mg in 24 hours.) So, if I take everything in my arsenal and I still have the headache I know I'm going to have it for three days and feel hungover the fourth day. Imitrex/Maxalt worked but conflict with my prozac and put me in the ER twice. So my doctor won't give me anything from that family anymore. Bad reaction from all ergotamines. Lorazepam & diazepam help lessen severity a little but escalate the severity of my depression if take two days in a row.

Please help me find a substitue for Midrin. It doesn't work for all my migraines, but it is really a blessing for those times I can feel an oncoming headache disappear!

I already take beta-blockers, amitriptyline, vitamin D, magnesium, food-derived iron supplements and eat cruciferous veggies to avoid anemia, drink 1/2 gallon water a day to avoid dehydration, avoid getting overheated, do hypnosis relaxation breathing, neck stretches and look away from the PC every few minutes to avoid eye & muscle strain, and I do all this DAILY to prevent them but still I wind up soaking my head in cold water and applying ice-packs for at least 2-3 days a month. I can't miss work one day every month, so I now use ice packs at work and if I have to throw up I have a plastic liner in my trash can. I use metoclopramide for nausea, too. That works well but puts me to sleep so I can't take it at work or if I'm going to have to drive home.

Thought menopause might lessen frequency - no luck...MRI shows black spots in brain that neurologist says are damage caused by migraines. Doc suggests Gabapentin but I KNOW generic midrin works - where can I get some???? IS IT ANY WONDER THAT I'M DEPRESSED AFTER 35 YEARS OF THIS?!?!

I am very upset that Midrin and its generic form have been discontinued. I have been taking the generic form and loved it. It always worked for me and I never worried about any side effects because I never had any. My doctor now has me on the generic form of Imitrex. After reading more posts than I can count on this drug from different sites, I am terrified to take this medicine. There are too many very dangerous side effects with this medicine. The company, Caraco, needs to start manufacturing Midrin and its generic again. As many posts as I have read against Imitrex, I have read more about how many people are upset about the discontinuation of Midrin since it works for them. IT HELPS people including me and we want it back. Please!!!

A generic form of Midrin can be purchased from a licensed compounding pharmacy. I recently purchased from vitalcareofmisslou.com. They require a valid prescription, but it is the exact same medicine as Midrin.

Hi,
I don't know if anyone has replied to you about this issue yet. I received a post yet about Midrin. I got the following reply to a similar question. I have copied a part of the message that gives the most important information. I have also found a Compounding Pharmacy in Ca. that I think can ship out of state. They are Los Altos Pharmacy, ph 650-948-1212. If they do not ship as I think they will you CAN find a Compounding Pharmacy in your state.
As for the Vasco dialator issue. My feeling is that I have been taking this medication for many years with excellent results, providing I take it early in the migraine cycle. I have never had any negative reactions. this medications was prescribed by a Dr. that was a specialist in migraines and conducted tests of new med's. I think he knew what he was doing so trust the medication. I felt that the possible risks were far out weighed by the benefits to my overall health and well being. I have placed my order and am paying $90 for 60 caps.the components are expensive and this pricing is comparable to the price I was paying for the generic. I suggest you investigate this avenue and see if it is a good fit for you. I am no Dr. but simply passing on my experiences and information sent to me from another migraine sufferer to you. I'm sure you will make a wise decision for your specific situation. Best regards, Penny

......."The second pharmacist at this pharmacy told me to tell my doc to not write "Midrin" on the prescription, but to make the prescription for Acetaminophen, Isomethaptene and Chloralhydrate. These are the ingrediants in Midrin. (Something about copy rights for the name Midrin.) The pharmacist said when it's written that way they can make it. I fogot to ask what the price will be but I'll let you know the outcome and the price.
So the original pharmacist I spoke to was incorrect in what he told me. I'm going back to my doc and getting a new prescription with those specific ingrediants on it and see if that will work! My pharmacy is Springhill Pharmacy in Wheat Ridge CO. 8550 W. 38th Ave. I'll keep you all updated." sherri

Penny, I was talking to my compound pharmacist a few days ago & he compounds Midrin under the name "Migraine Capsule", which has the same ingredients. When the FDA yanked it off the market, it left many people hanging that had relied on it many yrs, especially those unable to take triptans. My niece @ almost 15 falls into that group. It can be compounded & it should not cost an arm & leg. Good Luck!

Hi, I was able to get a prescription compounded in Calif. I got 60 for $90. I don't know what an arm and a leg go for these days but I'm hoping they will be cheaper the next time I need body parts. Seriously I'd like to know what price you have found and where.
I'm good for the moment but would prefer to pay a bit less, especially for 60. I was paying $50 for 30 of the caps at Walmart. compounding 60 in my mind should be a little less than that....::-) P
