Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 60)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

I was on it for thirteen days and the whole left side of my skull was numb and still is two weeks later when I complained of it they put me through a cat-scan told me there was nothing wrong and then suggested I look up if any of my medications might cause something like this full well knowing that this is a side effect after 13 days I also could not stand having shoes on my feet being a waitress in a very busy Diner I had no choice incredibly painful I suggest anybody who's prescribed this request if there's a substitute drug and read about those side-effects prior to doing it

How are you doing now? Did you request and demand they send you to a neurologist? That should have been the first thing they did after hearing about your symptoms. Where do you live? What kind of health insurance do you have, if any?

Omg! I can't believe you did 2 rounds of this stuff! I am so so sorry! I did one round to treat h pylori in October of 2016 and am still trying to figure out what is going on. Dizzy all day. I feel like I'm hungover all day long at work and so foggy headed. It takes me so long to comprehend new things now. But I know others have it worse. This drug is terrible. FDA doesn't care. Neither do the makers of this drug and the doctors don't even KNOW these side effects! I threatened my doctor with a legal suit and instead I just look like a lunatic.

I'm sorry to hear that you had to take this poison, and it is a poison.

I am still suffering six months later and and very sick. I now am stuck waiting for doctors to believe it's the drug and get real help. They don't know what to do with me. Everyday I wake up and regret taking this evil poison.

You need to be seen by a neurologist and probably have physical therapy to solve the dizziness stuff.. I did.. it did take my eye doctor calling my PCP and insisting that there was something wrong. now my records state that this med was the cause of the problem and is reported as something NOT to give me again.

Im so sorry. I took this poison in 2015, and so damaged by this. I still have severe dizziness and unbalance. And so many other things like muscle waisting, severe neuropathy from head to toe, blurry vision, Hard to swallow and breath, memory problems, gut problems, muscle pain and weakness, tendon and joint pain. Do you also have tinggling and numbness in your head with The dizziness? Have you done an mri on the brain?

It sounds your reaction to it is worse than mine. I've improved over the week in terms of side effects, but I still have abdominal pain from having c diff especially on the right side. I have an ultrasound scan on 10th November, but I don't think ultrasound is good for looking inside colon which is where pain is. All food eaten causes abdominal pain. Wishing you all recovery from the drug.

Thanks so much for the updates and all the information on the side effects of Flagyl. I took 1,500 mg for 4 days for stomach bug but had to stop because of nausea and because I felt like my metabolism literally couldn’t keep up - you’re supposed to take 3 of these suckers a day AFTER food, but couldn’t digest fast enough and ended up sleeping with full stomach, and woke up middle of the night and vomited.

But the day after I stopped the dizzy spells, slight grogginess began - quite worrying. I’ve now been off the drug over a week and much less dizzy but still occasionally happens, especially when I’m in bed for some reason.
It feels like I’ve been on a twelve hour boat trip or something - it does feel like it’s affected the middle ear - shaken not stirred. Appreciate that these symptoms will moderate and hoping sooner than later. Wondering if alcohol could help? Expecting a resounding NO! But some pathology prescribes drugs that create similar symptoms (in this case imbalance) to bring about a cure. At this stage, I’m up for anything.

I have also taken this drug for just two days and in fact, someone should be here to witness what I'm going through. Drowsiness, dizziness and loss of appetite keep troubling me, though I have suspended taking it 24hrs ago. Can somebody help me find a remedy to this?

Re: Richard (# 1190) Expand Referenced Message

The question is, what were you taking it for and can you get the dr to give you a different prescription... and if so read all the info on it before filling the prescription... and then don't take this med again and hope that no irreparable damage has occurred. You were wise to stop immediately. From experience you will not know if these symptoms will continue but do not keep taking it. When I took it I was having other symptoms plus these and saw my doctor and she said it would be fine and for me to take the last 2 days doses....etc... but then she admitted later that it was the medication that created the issue and she sent me to a neurologist who prescribed physical therapy that helped.

I think I'm having a reaction to it too. I'm feeling so much worse since taking it. I've been so dizzy and nauseous and have even been throwing up since taking it. It also feels like my heart is about to beat out of my chest. I'm not taking anymore of this. Currently waiting on the doc to call me back.

Okay, everyone, so I think I might have--theoretically--figured out what's happening to us. If I'm right, then metronidazole toxicity might actually be treatable (possibly even curable for some people).

The theory is that metronidazole toxicity is caused by thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is vitamin B1, and a deficiency in this one little vitamin causes:

cerebellar dysfunction: ataxia, especially in the legs; difficulty speaking, disruption in cognition/attention, mood disturbances, blurry vision, tremors

autonomic dysfunction (dysautonomia): disturbances in involuntary functions, such as: heart rate, blood pressure, sleep regulation, fight-or-flight response (emotional instability), swallowing, salivation, digestion, temperature regulation, muscle weakness, respiration, equilibrium.

Polyneuropathy: burning, tingling and/or numbness in the extremities, usually starting with the hands and feet. Optic neuropathy, causing loss of visual acuity and impaired vision. Sometimes tinnitus due to cranial nerve damage (neuropathy is harder to treat, just to let you know)

It turns out, metronidazole and thiamine are antagonists--metronidazole prevents the absorption of thiamine into the body and can plummet the victim into severe deficiency. There is some speculation that the body can even mistake metronidazole as thiamine, causing both damage and deficiency.

In medical literature, metronidazole is constantly being compared to another type of brain dysfunction called Wernicke's encephalopathy. The symptoms are almost identical and the lesions caused by Wernicke's are strikingly similar to that of metronidazole toxicity and found in the place--the back of the brain. Wernicke's is directly caused by...thiamine deficiency.

It also explains why many of us (myself included) keep having flare up's--our thiamine is in a fragile state and it does't take much stress (physical or mental) to plummet us back into severe deficiency. After the stress abates, we rest and recover enough thiamine to calm symptoms, until the next stressor that will, again, burn up our thiamine reserve and the symptoms return (the body doesn't store much thiamine, so it's easy to become deficient, especially if you're already skating on the edge).

There are instructions on what to do about this, what to take (you need magnesium as well). But remember, I'm just a patient, trying to take medical research and put it into practice. I'm trying this out myself right now. I am feeling better, but still have a long way to go. You will have to decide what is best for you.

I wish you all the best of luck!
