Metoprolol Side Effects (Top voted first)

Updated

I started Metoprolol Tartrate 25mg being one tab every 12 hours. I was in the hospital with a blood pressure of 200/130, sometimes higher with a high pulse and irregular heartbeat. I experienced tightening in chest, slight difficulity in breathing, and extreme variables in my pressures. Most of the time they are in the normal range, but occasionally my systolic has dropped under 100 and my diastolic was 58. I am monitoring my foods and am also taking Ativan twice daily. I am terrified. Anybody else have these variables in pressures? I have only been on the medicines for four weeks now. I have had diabetes and thyroid neg testing. I was diagnosed with Panic Disorder??? Never heard of it before. All my family including five siblings have high blood pressure as well.

I work in health care. thought I "knew it all". I was put on Metoprolol for arrhythmia. I have had one exhausting year....too tired to get out of my own way. No way would my doctor take me off. Well, I argued till he did. I couldn't believe how much better I feel. Get off Metoprolol, it is terrible.

Don't believe this fellow AT ALL. I had exactly the same problem with this medication and suffer from no anxiety at all. The medicine sucks. Get off it. And that guy should learn to be more respectful of people who may simply be on the wrong medication, and who wants to have blood pressure problems continually (I had my high blood pressure for over 2 years on the drug when before taking the drug my bp was low-normal always)? And yessss, high blood pressure is indicative of life-threatening problems if left untreated. Most doctors will fob you off. Get off this abominable drug. It made me feel like I was having a cardiac arrest EVERY night and I have positively nothing wrong with my heart just my blood pressure. As soon as I went off it my bp was excellently normal again and no spikes in blood pressure during the course of the night and, thankfully, no feeling like I was in the throes of a cardiac arrest. We're not all panic junkies, ya know. I think that guy is a bozo and should think before he writes such drivel. He obviously never had a medication go wrong on him. I personally think he must be a doctor. His ego dictates nothing less.

Metoprolol is not the right medication for everyone, everyone can react to it differently.

I also had severe problems with it and had to stop taking it. My doctor actually listed it in the allergic reactions section of my medical records to ensure that no one prescribes it to me, again.

At any time, if you are taking a medication and having unusual side effects or problems, you should contact your doctor and if they will not listen or help, then go to a different doctor or your nearest emergency care facility.

Unfortunately, doctors are not as well schooled in medications as pharmacists, so they are often only familiar with the basic side effects and details they may have learned through experience with other patients.

It is, however, very important to know that you should not stop taking this medication abruptly, on your own. Metoprolol does have an effect on the heart and, even if you don't have a heart problem, stopping it abruptly can cause rebound effects, which could include accelerated heart rate, atrial fibrillation and heart attack.

There is another medication in the same class that also works very well for most people, but it is not known to cause such severe and dangerous side effects. The name of it is Carvedilol, so you may want to ask your doctor about trying it.

These types of variations are not normal, nor necessarily safe. Have you spoken to your doctor about them and if so, what have they said?

Have they run any other types of tests to pinpoint a cause?

I was on Metoprolol Succ ER - 100 Mg for eight months - from day one I would have high blood pressure and very rapid heart beat -In those eight months I went to emergency five times only to be told - Panic Attacks - or I was very healthy. My Cardiologist and Primary Doctor could not find any problems. I was requested to go off of all beta blockers in order to have a stress test - No Metoprolol for two days and no" attacks", as I referred to them. I then realized these pills are quite large so I put them into a spoon and mixed with water before swallowing. It has been one month with no "attacks" My two doctors have indicated it is quite unlikely this was the problem. I KNOW IT WAS!!!!!

Maribel, all medications carry the risk of side effects, even over the counter products.

And while Metoprolol can cause side effects and some people have problems with it, the posts that you see here about that are just a very small percentage of the people using the medication.

There are many, many more that take it every day and don't have a problem with it, so they aren't on here posting.

Some people will experience them and have problems, so their dose will have to be lowered, or they'll have to switch to another medication.

However, most others won't have any severe problems, with it.

There is no way to know who will or will not have any problems with it. Thus, your best bet is to follow your doctors advice and see how the medication works for you.

If I were you, I'd learn to relax. Your symptoms are very much in line with panic disorder. Panic disorder can cause all of your symptoms including shortness of breath and unsteady blood pressure--which fluctuates a good d eal during the day for everybody.
Also your fluctuations are not abnormal att all. You might resolve your fears entirely with a combination of anti-anxiety medication in the short run and some sessions of talk therapy. I speak from personal experience. Be assured that your symptomas are treatable, NOT life threatening
and very common. Anxiiety atacks are awful to go through, but they won't cause any permanent damage that I know of. Reach out; help is available for your very common problem. Good luck, and have some faith!

Is Metoprolol anything like lisinopril hctz if it is you need to get re-evaluated ASAP this could be very dangerous. I was just taken off of lisinopril hctz by the emergency room doctor because of having a rapid heart rate . I thought it was panic attacks. It was that awful medication for blood pressure lisinopril hctz. You need to follow up with a physican asap. If your doctor is not listening you need to get another doctor that will

UPDATE: Son has now safely lowered his dose to 12.5 mg. twice a day. ( For 1 week, per MD ) No elevation in BP or heart rate. Dr. advised to lower again this week down to one 12.5 mg. dose in the morning only.
Seizure like episodes twice this week during the night.
Dr. states the less medicine taken, the less side effects will occur. Also to give it a month and body should adjust with minimal side effects if any. Has now been a month. How much more can he endure?! Has anyone else had seizures/episodes like this? If so, what can be done? HELP?

I've been taking Metoprolol 100 mg twice a day for a month now. I have the same symptoms as you and more. blood pressure 200/135 Now blood presure jumps all around but mostly is 90/50 heart beat 42. Sometimes blood pressure is normal But most of the time I Feel like IM going to die, so I've been weaning my self off of it. Finally stopped taking it today have not died yet and my blood pressure is normal heart beat almost 50 feel much better so far. Two weeks ago also started a juicing diet and cut all salt out. I suggest that anyone with heart problems or health problems in general watch Fat Sick & Almost Dead you can catch it on Netflix or Amazon or order it on Amazon. Also watch Forks over Knives This two Documentaries will change your thinking about taking all this medication. People with the same conditions as us have cured them selves with the diets they recommend so that's what IM trying to do. You should have your doctor monitor you while on these diets. My doctor won't do it so IM doing it on my own and hoping for the best. IM going to die taking all these medication anyway I feel like IM going to try the healthy diet way if I die then I die.
Good Luck to you all

I have a panic disorder to and like some people are saying 'not all drugs work for everyone.'

I will be the one who does say, this drug works for me along with my anxiety meds that I take, which is Prozac. I take 25mg Metoprolol and 60mg Prozac. I have been on on Paxil, Buspar, Abilify, Zoloft Effexor and Lexapro. Surprisingly out of those, Paxil, Buspar and Zoloft don't work well on me and I get worsening panic attacks. Effexor works somewhat but not fully haha.

Anyway, I hope whoever reads this or sees this knows that Metoprolol isn't for everyone and I hope you find something to help with your anxiety!

See your Doctor or get a second opinion. There are multiple blood pressure drugs on the market and, depending on your personal chemistry this drug may be the wrong one for you. I could not use it. I had an immediate elevation in my blood pressure which, sent me to the emergency room. I am back on 10 mg of Lisinopril and it does make me a little dizzy from time to time and it causes me to cough more frequently than normal but, it keeps my blood pressure stable. I also, drink Hibiscus tea from the Hibiscus flowers it is a natural for lowering blood pressure. Absolutely no red meat, no pork,no bacon low salt or no salt I use herbs for flavoring my cooking.. I only eat Turkey, Chicken, Fish and lots of Vegetables and fruits and nuts for snacks. We Blood Pressure patients must change our entire diets and old eating habits if we want to live. I also, without any other efforts I lost about 29 pounds just from eating properly I am never hungry and I do occasionally eat chocolate (DARK) It's easier than you think. There are lots of foods on the market today and a multitude of greats recipes on YouTube for us. I hope this helps Get better soon.

Spirit are there any cardiac clinics in your area? They are usually run by a local hospital, so you may want to call around and ask if they have one.

That's what I had to go to, so I could finally get the help I needed and have someone that would listen to me about the problems I was having with other blood pressure medications that doctors had tried to give me in the past.

Lopressor contains Metoprolol as the active ingredient and, as you can see from the other posts in this thread, there are many people that have problems with it. It is well known to cause severe side effects in many people.

There are other options that you can try, the one I switched to, that isn't known to cause as many side effects is Carvedilol.

For those of you that are have medication problems get your Medical care provider to change you at once this is serious stuff don't suffer with this product. There are at least 7 different type's of Blood Pressure meds available you may need to test out a couple until you find the right one Lisinopril has minimum side effects for the most part. Also, get some Hibiscus Tea or Hibiscus dried Flowers to make tea. It is a proven Blood Pressure lowering product check WEB MD for details.

YES! Seems to depend on various factors, but I've had VERY weird, and vivid dreams, nightmares to normal people (LOL), night sweats, various aches and pains, and basically feeling SO exhausted that I have to lay down after coming home from a barely 6 hour work day where I did nothing physical! I have also had VERY bad vision problems-Like super cloudy/wavy vision...Think this was a withdrawal symptom, but also have had "de-focused" vision, like the way it looks if you need reading glasses, which I don't need...I'm near-sighted... The exhaustion is the worst, and although I just started cutting my pills in half (taking 50mg once a day instead of 100mg) I already have noticed my energy level is back to/close to normal... My energy level also seems strongly effected by dehydration, as:

1. I don't drink much water and drink too many caffeinated bevs-coffee/coke/frappacinos
2. I smoke, which raises my BP, although generally only a few points, not massively
3. As an American, I intake way too much sodium! Today I had a Chicken sandwich/curly fries/coke meal from Jack ITB and it was 2400!!!! mg sodium!! ONE MEAL! That's ridiculous!
4. I'm not super fat, but still carrying an extra 40 lbs at 6'2"...which of course affects my energy level
5. Have a bad habit of staying up too late and getting 5-6 hours sleep/night, or even less..

So do YOU have any of these bad habits? I'd suggest getting regular sleep, drinking LOTS of water, eating some fruit everyday, cutting back on packaged foods and fast foods, and going for a walk every day, even at a relaxed pace...

You should also give the meds 2 weeks or so, and the exhaustion SHOULD at least reduce in intensity...IF it doesn't:

1. Try switching to the NAME BRAND (Toprol XL I believe) version of the drug (assuming you are taking a generic)

2. Talk to your DR about it and see if something else might work better...

I'm on my 4th BP med, mostly because when I got on the first-second, I was dealing with a newly formed hiatal hernia and a viral infection, and other issues, and couldn't separate my physical symptoms from the meds' side effects...So I kept switching meds, hoping to clear up the phys problems...Didn't work though...

Also-Be aware that MET can and caused me to have negative thoughts, complete lack of interest in day to day activities, and anxiety....generalized....It basically sets your anxiety level higher than normal and your brain then "fills in the blanks" with whatever your specific "default worries" are...So if it's your spouse cheating, your kids getting hurt, losing your job, money problems, whatever, that's what you will become anxious about...Make sense?
