My doctor just started me on belviq to help loose weight because the methadone has cause so much weight gain, and I am on hydroxyzine to help sleep at night. I forgot to ask her if they are OK together. 75mg methadone in morning, twice a day belviq, and 25mg hydroxyzine at night for sleep

Hello, Jack! How are you?

I didn't find any problems, or interactions listed between these medications, but it's always best to double check this information to be certain. I'm sure you're already aware that the Hydroxyzine and Methadone both increase sedation, but it seems you've been safely taking them together for awhile, now. But if either dosage is raised, you'll need to be cautious.

The FDA lists the typical side effects for Belviq as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, insomnia, anorexia and dry mouth.

However, you should also be aware that weight loss is going to be difficult to achieve, even with the Belviq, as long as you are still on the Methadone.

Is there anything else I can help with?

My do told me that Belviq blocks the receptor for narcotic pain meds like methadone. If someone is on methadone regularly or daily for pain or MMT, they might want to check this further. But absolutely please do let me know if you're having any interactions with your methadone. I'm very interested in trying this because I've got friends who are dropping weight like magic with this stuff--but I too am on a very low dose of Methadone: 15 mg daily and tapering down. Thank you and best of luck to you!

I've not heard of such a thing. Belviq contains the active ingredient Lorcaserin and it hasn't been known to block the opiate receptors according to the current information listed by the FDA.

Your doctor may have been thinking of Contrave, which does contain Naloxone that blocks them.

Has anyone else heard this about the Belviq?

I know I'd never write for it for obesity. Period. Read the FULL FDA-mandated PI and you'll see why. I mix "cocktails" for a my patients all the time. Where did this quack go to medical school, under a rock in the Carribean. He DEFINES "irrational prescribing" and I'd guess the doc belongs to AM (Soc for Addiction Medicine). That's NOT a recognized specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties — and for good reason. I don't know if this still is true, but when I started a Board-certified shrink could become a Fellow of the APA after five years of practice and by paying a fee. I asked my mentor why "FAPA" was't among his many creds. I only list MD, PhD in my letterhead and cards and Rx forms anyway. I think my RXs have "Practice Limited to Psychiaty" because pharmacists give us shrinks a wider berth with doses etc., on psych or sedative/hypnotic//CNS tim drugs.

Your doctor (assuming one doc did all this damage) is an i****. Belviq has plenty of nasty, irreversible side effects — because it was derived from a family of psych drugs, He/She should know better. With methadone you get potentiates and Vistaril (hydroxyzine) MIGHT have some effect considering all the other drugs, but 25mg BID is an incredibly low dose.
