My doctor started me on 400mg of megestrol to gain weight. Because of how quickly I gained, it was reduced to 80mg two months later. Could that change in dosage be the cause of clitoral atrophy?

Hello Jessa,

According to the National Institute of Health and their warnings associated with megestrol acetate I don't any warnings or adverse reaction listings that states this medicine causes clitoral atrophy, however, it does list decreased libido as a common side effect.

My understanding is that clitoral atrophy is the decreased size and feeling of the clitoris which could be the result of hormonal imbalance and or restricted blood flow. Due to the fact that the megestrol is a synthetic hormone based drug it is possible that despite not being listed as a common side effect it could potentially result in an imbalance that causes this adverse reaction.

I recommend that you consult your doctor as soon as possible as it is possible that some of the changes may be irreversible if not handled with urgency. It is always better to err on the side of caution and nip these types of things in the bud and at the very least give ourselves the peace of mind we need.

Best of luck to you and let us know what you find.
