Meclizine May Worsen Nausea?

Updated

I was taking a drugstore brand of meclizine, 25 mg non-chewable tablets. It worked great to control my nausea. When I ran out of the non-chewable tablets, I bought chewable Bonine. To my dismay, almost immediately after chewing the Bonine I became nauseated, and the nausea lasted almost 24 hours. To make sure it was not a fluke, I took chewable Bonine the next day and had the same reaction. Then I switched back to the non-chewable tablets and got relief from my nausea.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know why the chewable form of meclizine might cause nausea when the non-chewable form does not? If I swallowed the Bonine tablets instead of chewing them, would I still get nauseated? (I haven't tried this yet.)

12 hours after I took the chewable fom of Bonine I also became nauseated. I had planned on being on a boat that morning but we decided to come back in due to incliment weather. I was wondering if it was Bonine that caused the nausea or a heavy dinner that I ate. I will try the non-chewable tablets.

What needs added here is that it is a known fact that medications can sometimes cause the exact opposite of their desired effect in some people that take them.

It can happen with anything and is why antidepressants carry black box warnings that they may cause depression and suicidal tendencies in some people. Its just not considered as dangerous when it comes to an antihistamine causing nausea, rather than preventing it.

Many people never realize that the very medications they often take to relieve headaches, such as Tylenol or Advil can cause them as side effects in some people.

That said, in regards to the original post, my best guess is that there was something in the name brand that you are sensitive to, perhaps a different dye or other inactive ingredient.
