Mallinckrodt Fentanyl Patch (Page 2)

Updated

Does anyone know how it is made? Does it have the medicine woven into the fabric of the patch or is it in a pouch form? Thank you.

Hi
I read your post through trying to find out why my new patches are not working as well as the old ones . I am in the UK so the brands are not the same as in the US . Where did you find out that the dose of fentanyl is different in various brands . I changed about two weeks ago and gradually my pain symptoms have returned also some nausea . I believe the change was due to cost to the NHS not that these new patches are better in any way . They are called Fencino , the old ones were Duragesic which were marvellous and really helped the pain. kind regards

You can usually find the amount of drug on their website or just searching around. It is not only how much of the drug is in the patch but more important is the release rate into your system per hour.

I totally agree with you. I have been using the Mylan patches for years and this last time the pharmacy gave me patches made by Mallinckrodt. Very shortly after switching to this patch my pain steadily increased and I've been having to take many more Percocet to make it through each day. I have called and advised the pharmacy and will refuse any future prescription from them.

OMG , what does it take to get Mylan brand patches? The other brands are just not as good. NO pharmacy in the area carries Mylan and can get no response from the company. (Mid Michigan) help

Are you saying that you actually like the Mallinckrodt brand? When I had them last month I was sure there was no medication at all in them. I was in dreadful pain and so happy to get back on my usual patch from Mylan. I will never use Mallinckrodt again.

As far as I know Fentanyl patches contain the medication Duragesic. Not sure if you can get the Mylan brand in the UK but I have been on the Fentanyl patch since 2004 and find that Mylan makes the best patch. I have some skin sensitivity issues but do well putting a Tegaderm dressing over the patch immediately to block air getting at the edge of the patch. They come in a maximum 100 mcg patch so I use one 100 mcg and one 25 mcg patch together.

I've been having the same problems with my Fentanyl patches. Every time I go to have my script filled they give me some generic that doesn't help with my nerve pain as the Mylan patches!! I think I would know since I've been using them for the last 6 years for permanent nerve damage from back surgery.

I have the same problem with that type of patch, the ones that are single layer with the medicine on it, they are very ineffective, they let the medicine release too fast and run out long before it is time to change to a new one. I have found that the Watson brand work the best for me, but have been told by my pharmacy that they are on hold and can't be ordered. Bet they are being forced to change to the single layer now. I hate it when junkies ruin pain management for those of us that truly need it!

You need to visit RXRights.org. They bring bills before congress and usually they get passed.

Not sure if your doc would go for this or if you can afford it, but because I use 125 mcg and Mylan only comes in 100 max I have to get two patches. I find it helps a bit to put one on then stagger the 2nd a day so that they run out at different times. Still though you're right in that by then end of the 3rd day they aren't as strong. I use more Percocet to get through on those days depending on how active I have to be. I have to keep a chart to remind myself which is changed when.

I found the Mallinckrodt Fentanyl patch to be almost useless. I was in far more pain during the month I had them and have refused to use anything other than the Mylan brand since.

where are you able to find Watson brand? Do you know who carries them?

I personally like the mallinckrodt ones better than any of the other 4 brands I have used including mylan. I get 30 of the 50mcg/hr ones per month.

If you get 30 a month that's why you like them. They are supposed to last 3 days each which is only 10 patches and that way they just don't work for me because they run out too fast.

I have 4 destroyed discs & 3 more that are bulging above those 4 vertabrae. The doctor, upon seeing my MRI & Radiologist's report said, "Good God, I can't believe you can even walk!" He prescribed 10 "Fentanyl Patches" - each good for 72 hours. 30 hours after applying the first one (50 micro grams?) - I had zero relief. Today, I attached a second patch to my body and heave felt zero relief also. Should I take a 3rd? It's 4th of July and my doctor is incommunicado. Also, would it act better if I palced it on my back from which the pain eminates?

You should Not add another patch unless you call an er doc and get their input. They work by absorbing into the fat, then working into your system. It doesn't overly matter where you place them. I usually place mine on my abdomen, then cover them with a tegaderm cover which protects them in the bath/shower and keeps them on better. What brand were you given? Only the Mylan brand works for me. The Mallinckrodt did not do a thing for me and I reported them with serial# etc. but never heard a reply. I just got my doc to insist on Mylan and I remind the pharmacy each month. You have to be opiate tolerant before using this but I presume your doc took care of that. I have been using this for over 10 years. Herniated disks are not very forgiving. I am on 125 mcg and use Percocet for the excess pain. One thing that helps me is every couple of years getting the facet joint nerves destroyed. Not fun but doable and really helps. I wish you the best.

Detroit Ken,

Let's talk about what you were using for pain control before the 50mcg/hr fentanyl patch. What were you taking and dosage amount? I have quite a bit of experience here, maybe I can offer some info.

I was taking buprenorphine (2mg 1/2 am & 1/2 pm) - I was taking this specifically for pain. This worked perfectly as I had tolerable (back) pain prior to the, Easter Sunday accident. After the Easter Sunday incident / episode my Doctor had me taper down to absolutely nothing. 50% less on week one; 50% less again in week two and, finally, down to nothing (BTW, I felt zero side effects after weaning myself off of buprenorphine). After 8 days of taking absolutely nothing, he prescribed the 50mcg, fentanyl, patches (each good for 72 hours). He gave me permission to put on a second patch - if the first one was not working. 24 hours after the first patch, I applied the second patch - and still nothing happened. Absolutely zero pain relief. I called him yesterday (he is on vacation in Maui) and he said try a third patch. So, I have 3 patches applied over the last 3 days -- and I have zero pain relief. I know that the drug does work because last year I had an burst appendix and they IV'd me at the hospital with Fentanyl; this stopped the pain immediately. I am well aware of how buprenorphine blocks the receptors and my doctor is very surprised that, after 8 days of no buprenorphine, I am still in agonizing pain with absolutely zero relief. I will visit him on July 7th and, hopefully, he'll prescribe something stronger in addition to the patches? My surgery is not scheduled until September.
