Making The Suprep Prep Easy

Updated

Get some banana flavored twinpop popsicles and a large straw (like for milkshakes) or use two regular straws.
The straws get the Suprep past most of the taste buds. After each gulping session, take a bite of the popsicle. It will totally clear any aftertaste. I got both preps down after four gulping sessions. In about 20 minutes, the sessions on the toilet started. I just entertained myself with my Kindle and cell phone for about an hour or so. Then I had a couple more quick trips....
I asked my gastroenterologist why she did not recommend Suprep for every patient, and she said those who are regular do best with Suprep. I will not dread doing the Suprep for my next colonoscopy (which I have every five years).
Also, before starting, I put my aloe moist wipes, jar of Vaseline, Kindle, and cell phone in the bathroom. I applied Vaseline before I even went the first session, and every time after blotting with the wipes.
BLOT, do not wipe!!! I never even got sore during either of the preps! This was my fourth or fifth colonoscopy, and I have perfected the technique! Trust me!!!! LOL!!!!

To lessen -- or in most cases entirely prevent -- your having to taste unpalatable items that you must ingest, the easiest method is simply to block-off both nostrils during the eating or drinking of whatever it is that you must get down. If you're unable to smell the food, drink or laxative whilst you're consuming it then you'll not be able to taste it at all, and if you finish off with something that is decidely palatable[like strawberry jam*] whilst your nostrils are still closed off then you won't even be aware that you've just consumed something that is extremely unpalatable. Another method is to block-off your nostrils after first masking your sense of smell with a very strong but pleasant fragrance before consuming any unpalatable items. This is the reason why winetasters get their noses right down into the glass well before any of the wine per se actually touches their palate.

Better yet than blotting is if you are fortunate enough to have access to a bidet during the course of your rawdeal..err..your ordeal! ;o)

*In my younger days we had a joke that if you were going out to have a very big night on the beer then it was always considered most prudent to first have a big feed of strawberry jam. The reason why one was enthused to try following this advice was that the strawberry jam would likely taste just as nice coming back up later as it was going down before. ;o)

I have ulcerative colitis and had my 3rd colonoscopy yesterday. As far as preps this one was the best one. Previously did the pills and the gallon jug prep. Would go for a colonoscopy every other month if it weren't for the prep. After a long over due amount of time I bit the bullet and did the suprep. Some helpful hints..... Refrigerate the bottles 24 hours prior to use and use cold water to mix. Have chicken broth on hand, ice tea, lemon ice, and mint ( I used peppermint) gum. Use a straw to drink. Take a few big sips and broth right after then some lemon ice. After doing this I decided to chew some mint gum to tame the nausea. By chewing the gum ( keep refreshing the pieces so it's minty, and drinking the suprep then eating some lemon ice it was almost like numbing your taste buds mixing mint and lemon ice. I found it very helpful in getting it down although still unpleasant. Halfway through the mixture I did vomit but was able to continue once I decided to use the gum. Was dreading the next morning but it was better and I drank it faster maybe because my head knew what to expect and I realized the gum and ice helped. Hope this was helpful!

I agree with you.. using the wipes and Vaseline and staying in the bathroom really helped..not so sure I'm going to like doing it at three in the morning for the next bout.

That sounds like a good plan BUT I'm supposed to have ONLY clear liquids today. I think the popsicles would be considered solid food. :-(

Popsicles are definitely liquid. They melt immediately and count as liquid. I avoid all the fuss by squirting a big shot of my favorite MIO flavor. Clears up all the bad tastes.
