I have a 4 month old standard poodle that has a trace go blood in her urine. (confirmed by a human u/a strip borrowed from an adult clinic). I have a few macrobid 100 mg capsules left over from a previous UTI will it be safe to give to her until I can get to the vet on Wednesday? She is approx. 35 lbs. Stopped taking Macrobid on day five in order to complete a gastric emptying scan. I resumed taking it on day six. I have four days left to complete my 10 day UTI treatment. Have I compromised it's effectiveness? So far, it seems to have worked wonders on my UTI. Thank you for your response-just worried I won't get rid of this nasty bug. ## Hello, Rose! How are you? I'd suggest checking with your doctor to be sure, you may need to do another full course of treatment. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

I took macrobid for a UTI. On the last day I thought I had the flu. Chills, fever, exhaustion, a little nausea and a little pain. The second day of the flu I went to the doctor, and noticed I had a rash developing on my legs. We thought the rash was unrelated to the flu. Two days later the rash is very severe, with purplish spots and climbing up my body. The doctor said he did not advise any steroids but now I'm a little worried. They made an appointment for me for with a dermatologist four days from now but I'm afraid I'll be permanently disfigured by then. Also my ears are ringing. Should I go to an urgent care center? It's Friday night and the doctor will be unavailable over the weekend. ## The FDA does list a non-allergic skin rash as being a possible side effect of ...

On my last day of treatment: I am PALE and depressed.... Is this normal? Feeling tired and just a sense of feeling real bad with no explanation. ## Yes, this antibiotic may cause those types of symptoms, it could also be due to your having had an infection. As listed by the FDA, other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, stomach pain and diarrhea. If things get worse, or don't improve in a week, or so, you should see your doctor, again. Is there anything else I can help with?

I was prescribed nitrofurantoin 100mg for a bladder infection, I ended up not needing them, now I have an ear infection... can I take this medication to treat the ear infection? ## Hello, Mary! How are you? I'm sorry about the ear infection, they can be very painful. This is an antibiotic that can be used to treat various types of infections, as listed by the FDA, but it may not be the appropriate one for your ear infection and taking it inappropriately creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. You should see your doctor for a proper diagnosis and prescription, if necessary. Typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## My poor dog has a swoll...

I've been taking macrobid 2x a day for 4 days now, I have 3 more days left but the burning isn't too bad anymore but I still smell that UTI urine smell and I know my uti isn't gone yet and it maybe isn't even getting too much better. Is that normal? Should I see my doctor? ## Hello, Summer! How are you? The general rule with antibiotic is that if they are working, you shouldn't see any worsening after the first full 24 hours of taking them and you should start to see improvement after being on them for a full 3 days. If that does not apply, then yes, you should consult your doctor. The FDA lists the typical antibiotic side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I was prescribed macrobid for a bladder infection and now have an abscessed tooth. I have amoxicillin clavulanate with potassium. Can I take both antibiotics at the same time? ## Hello, Julie! How are you? They can be taken together, but you should only do so if your doctor or dentist has instructed you to take them both. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotic as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have been taking macrobid for 2 days now. My chest has progressively started hurting with burning. I also have a cough. Do I need to go to ER or call doctor in the morning.. Also what is happening and what will my doctor do for this ## Hello, Reynolds! How are you? I'm sorry about the way you're feeling. The burning coupled with the cough leads me to suspect that you may be experienced acid reflux, which can be a side effect of this antibiotic. You should contact your doctor, they may want you to try an antacid. The FDA lists other typical side effects of this antibiotic as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

If I was allergic to Macrobid or macrodantin years ago ( I don't remember what kind of reaction I had), can I take the generic form of Bactrim? I had to stop taking Cipro because of sores in my throat and a severe sore throat. ## Hello, Carole! How are you? Yes, this is a different antibiotic that is unrelated to the other. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Caveat: You can take it, as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you.

How long does Macrobid remain in your body after you stop taking it? It's causing itching after three days of use. ## Hello, Sam! How are you? Did you experience any other allergic reactions, such as a skin rash, swelling, or trouble breathing that the FDA lists? It may take a week, or so, before things settle back down and the reaction goes away. Have you consulted your doctor? If you need an antibiotic, then you most likely need to switch to a different one.

I already have diarrhea dur to previous c diificile infection . My doctor has prescribed microbid which I not very keen o take. Since I feel it will worsen my situation. What should I do? ## Hello, Jam! How are you? Diarrhea can be a side effect of antibiotics, along with nausea, dizziness, headache and non-allergic skin rash, as listed by the FDA. However, C. Difficile can be deadly, if you let it continue untreated. Your doctor would not have prescribed it, if they though there was a dangerous risk to you. How long will you be taking it?

This antibiotic did cause burning in the chest, heart palpitations, disgusting taste in mouth that nothing can get rid of, loss of appetite and diarrhea and vomiting the first day I took it with yogurt. I wouldn't advise anyone to take this medication with dairy. Be sure to have a FULL meal before taking this medication to avoid severe nausea ?? I also had joint pain in my calves and tingling in hands and feet. ## Hi Rys, Sorry to hear about your experience with generic Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin). Looking at the drug monograph on NIH.gov, all of what you mentioned, aside from heart palpitations & that "disgusting" taste, are reported to be general side effects from the medication itself. However I too try to stay away from dairy as often as possible. Not sure if that'...

Just finished 500mg amoxicyillin for tooth infection. It's still here, but now also have a UTI. Prescribed macrobid 100mg. I'm now concerned that I have a major infection brewing. Will this help? ## Help, Mich! How are you? It is most commonly used to treat UTIs. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. There's a chance that some bacteria just traveled through your digestive tract from your mouth to your bladder, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a major infection. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thank you for the prompt reply! Yes, I think some of the bacteria did travel. Can I eat dairy products while taking this medication for a UTI? ## Hi Mari, While there are certain antibiotics that cannot be taken with dairy; dairy products are not listed as a food/drug interaction with Macrobid (nitrofurantoin); so in this case there is no need to worry. The reason why some antibiotics cannot be taken with dairy is because some of the minerals in these products can bind to the antibiotic, making it less effective. I hope this info helps!
