Losing Hair While Taking Finasteride 5mg

Started taking finasteride 5mg about a year ago and have had great results until about a month ago, and I have started shedding my hair again. I was going to stop for a week to get it to kick back into gear. Any thoughts on this?

Sorry to hear about your situation. According to NIH, Finasteride is used to treat an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) as well as hair loss in men. So to lose hair as a result of taking something that's supposed to stop hair loss is confusing beyond recognition.

Finasteride reportedly treats male pattern hair loss by blocking the body's production of a male hormone in the scalp that stops hair growth.

My worry is that if it can block the body's production of hormones, what else can it do that isn't being advertised publically and what are its long-term effects on hair growth? The drug companies have a lot to answer for, but no one willing to accept responsibility.

Nevertheless, I hope you're doing much better since the timing of your post.

Latest update is I am shedding MORE hair daily and very discouraged. I am going to contact doctor and maybe get apt. with Bosley hair transplant clinic.
