Losartan And Seizures?

Hello. My son is on 50mg Losartan for prevention of aortic root growth due to Marfan syndrome. After about six months of taking it, he started to experience episodes of feeling “funny.” This included brief nausea/drop in the pit of his stomach, dizziness, and a feeling like he didn’t want to move his arms and legs. In the recent past, this has progressed into what appear to be petit mal or absence seizures—brief periods of staring blankly and not responding. He still reports that sudden drop in the pit of his stomach preceding an episode and then a feeling of not wanting to move arms and legs. I asked his cardiologist if the Losartan could be causing those episodes and he was skeptical but agreed to take him off the meds for a week or so to see if they stopped. He’s been off the Losartan for just over a week, and the episodes have not stopped. I have two questions: First, has anyone had experience with Losartan causing seizures? And second, how long does it take for Losartan to REALLY leave one’s system? Thank you.

It has been known to cause seizures, in some people that take it, according to FDA reports. Other side effects may include nausea, headache, dizziness, increased urination, and hypotension.

If you put in the medication, and dosage the total elapsed time is approximately 22 hours, but that doesn't necessarily mean that any possible side effects will stop that fast, it may take 4 to 6 weeks for things to improve and for side effects to go away.

My husband suffers from the same type of seizures, and they are scary.

Has there been any change?

Is he on any other medications?

Thanks for your reply, Verwon. Yes, the episodes are definitely troubling to see. No real changes for my son. The only other medication he’s on right now is a prednisolone eye drop for inflammation post-surgery. We do have an appointment with a pediatric neurologist soon, so hoping that might give us some answers. I’m keeping him off the Losartan for the time being—hoping and praying that symptoms go away with the Losartan being out of his body for longer.
