Levaquin Problems

Updated

I've had a bad month with flu and a sinus infection. I'm somewhat immune compromised as I take immuran for Crohn's Disease. I was prescribed doxycycline, and then azithromycin, with no relief from the sinusitis. My doc put me on a 3 week course of levaquin 750mg. The levaquin has been helping my sinusitis, but I've been developing some troubling side effects. First side effect was gastritis with nausea. As I have Crohn's, I know how to deal with gastritis, but none of my usual strategies were working. Finally just did some pretty big doses of liquid gaviscom, which did help. Then, night before last, I started with some really horrible skin crawls. Full bore, ants crawling under my skin feeling, and nothing helped. I was truly losing my mind with it. Scalding hot baths finally overcame the sensations. I spent about 5 hours in the tub. While I was undergoing the skin crawls, I also developed a perioral numbness, severe enough to slur my speech. I also have soreness at the attachment for my right biceps tendinitis n, and my vision is a little blurry. I finally figured out that it had to be the levaquin, as it was the only new drug I was taking. I was somewhat disconcerted when I read that the peripheral neuropathy could be permanent. 2 days later, my skin still feels somewhat reactive, but it's much better. I have contacted my doc (and dc'd the levaquin). Haven't heard back from my doc, which is strange. I've discovered that as I get older, my drug tolerances are very much lessened. I've taken levaquin in the past with no problems, but I guess that era is over. These are really pretty scary side effects.

Hello, Beth! How are you? I hope you're feeling better!!!

It is normal for our bodies to change, as we age and sometimes a medication we took without a problem before, suddenly starts causing weird reactions and issues.

Have you heard back from your doc, yet?

The typical side effects of antibiotics, as listed by the FDA, usually include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
