Killer Headaches

Updated

I'm on Contrave almost 3 mos and lost 29 lbs...that's the great part, but lately I am getting the worst headaches, usually over one eye . Lately I've been getting 3 headaches a week and all I could do is lay in bed. Sometimes ice on my head feels better or even the pressure from the pillow being on my head to block out the light helps. I went to my prescribing doctor and she said headaches are a side effect. Other than a headaches my only other side effect is dry mouth.
My doctor said the headache should go away as this does happen to a few patients on this meds.
Advil migraine doesn't seem to help so I really don't know what else I could take with contrave.
If I wasn't on contrave this kind of headache would definitely be gone with a Vicodin! But I know I cannot take them with contrave.
This headache is so bad as I'm typing this I'm nauseous if anybody has any tips or could tell me what they take if they have headaches like this I would surely appreciate it.
I'm very desperate for relief.

I have been on contrave for almost one month now at first I had no side effects aside from dry mouth but now almost four weeks in I've started getting headaches and being so nauseous I can barely eat anything.
Let me know if you find anything that helps that doesn't take me out of commission so I can't work

I have been using Contrave for about 5 weeks and have lost 16 lbs. At first, I didn't have any side effects but for the past week, I have felt HORRIBLE! I've had really bad headaches, am constipated, nauseous and have dry mouth. I haven't slept through the night for the past 4 days; I wake up in a strange panic. This started with my increase to 3 pills a day. I have decided to stop taking the pills after speaking with my doctor. It has worked for me as an appetite suppressant but is not worth the side effects for me. I am going to continue with my healthy eating and exercise plans.

Hello CeCe,

I know this isn't really what you are going to want to hear but I suggest you do what you're doctor said and ride this out. This is an unfortunate side effect from the contrave and I know that it's a debilitating experience and extremely uncomfortable but that's just the reality of the situation. As you have already taken an ibuprofen (advil) and it isn't working I don't think there are many other options available medicinally. That being said I have found that whenever I have headaches above the eyes (typically coming from eye strain) I run a hot shower and let the hot water run over my face. This reduces the pressure in your head, lowers swelling and opens the sinus cavities that may be pushing up against the irritated area.

Sometimes we simply have to power through discomfort and pain as there is just no remedy available. I hope you feel better soon and that your contrave continues to work for you. If your symptoms get to the point where you are just unable to bear it I would recommend you discuss with your doctor changing medications as this one may not be right for you.
