I think I accidentally took a double dose of keppra - I'm on 750 mg twice daily, what should i expect? ## Hello, Ann! How are you? Did you experience any adverse effects? It can taken in doses up to 3,000mgs a day, so an overdose is doubtful, though that can vary depending on the person and how their body reacts to it, but you will most likely experience more side effects than usual and you may feel very dizzy, nauseous and drowsy, as listed by the FDA. It would also be wise to contact your doctor and inform them of what happened to be safe. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Ann, I take 1500 mg Levetiracetam ER once in the morning and 150 mg of lamotrigine 3x's a day in divided doses. As a reminder, I have set alarms on my cell phone when to take each med. I also take k...

My son, 37, had a massive stroke caused by sepsis 19 months ago. He had neuropathy in both feet, got a strp infection in his feet which went septic and then had the stroke. He then had charcot foot bilaterally, very severely, which has been corrected as much as possible over last year thru surgery. He suffered a seizure 10 months ago from being put on Ultram. Now 3 days ago, he suffered another seizure blamed just on having a lowered seizure threshhold. He was put on 500mg Keppra every 12 hours. This morning, he started having extremely severe pain in his feet on the skin and the pain is moving around on the bottoms and tops of his feet. He has endured extreme amounts of pain in the past, but this is SO sharp and burning that he cries out every time it hits him... which is every few mom...

I'm on 500 mg of keppra a day. I have never had an actual seizure but was prescribed it as I used to get really hot and nauseous, and feel faint. I have been on this for 3yrs. Can I stop taking it? ## Hello, Andrea! How are you? Actually, those could have been seizures. When you experience such symptoms, it could be due to focal point seizures, as explained by the NIH. Thus. I'd not recommend stopping the medication, without your doctor's approval. The relevant question is, have you experienced these symptoms, since you've been taking the Keppra? If not, then you have your answer that they were focal point seizures. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, mood swings and weight gain.

Recently have been having vague memory problems lasting 30 to 60 secs. Am68 yrs old. Dr suggested imay have epilepsy. Hiwsafeisthis drug andcanI fly ## Hello, Ann! How are you? It is no more safe or risky than most other medications. It is an anticonvulsant and it can cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, memory loss and change of personality, as reported by the FDA. Do you mean flying in a plane or are you a pilot?

i'm thinking of working in costa rica in a year or so.... i don't know if they have my seizure meds- lamictal, keppra xr, and topamax. they all have to be brand name, unfortunately... i can't seem to find a website that has a list for meds to countries. ## None of those drugs are controlled substances, ask your doctor (and call your insurance company) and see if you can get a year's supply prescribed at one time - most insurance companies will allow you to get a 6 month supply at one time by mail, you can try for a year - if not, have them do the 6 month supply and then have the second 6 month supply sent to your mom or someone else and have them reshipped to you in Costa Rica. ## There really is no comprehensive list available, anywhere, for what medications would be av...

A friend of mine started keppra two weeks ago. In those two weeks, she has had violent rages toward her friends and family, she's been going from euphoric to depressed several times a day.... The real problem is that she doesn't think anything is wrong, and refuses to speak to a doctor about it. Does anybody know if there is a way for me to report her reactions to her doctor? The only other two people left in her life at this point are also refusing to help. ## Hello, Melissa! How are you? Yes, you can contact her doctor and let them know. They cannot discuss her medical information with you, but you can fill them in on what's happening. Keppra is actually very well known to cause personality changes like that in some people that take it, as listed by the FDA, and most are w...

My husband was put on keppra about two months ago. He slept day and night for about a week and a half. He's awake alot more now but when he's up he's in a bad mood or just indifferent. He's been on seroquel for years to treat bipolar disorder. He was in a bad mood alot before the seroquel and then he was great. Now that he's on keppra he's in a bad mood alot, like its reversing the seroquel positive effects. The Dr said he'd wean him off so I'm hoping for the best. He didn't mention prescribing anything else for seizures so I am worried he will start having them again. Any comments or advice? ## Hello, Sunshine! How are you? Keppra is actually well known to cause such personality changes, I'm surprised the doctor didn't warn him about it. My h...

I had one grand mal seizure last year, I was put on 1500 mg of Keppra right away. I had a tumor removed. Problem gone. Neurologist said I have to stay on the Keppra. I hate Keppra. Basically makes any mood I have to tenth degree. Angry is sooo angry and sad is soooo sad and even happy is soooo happy. I can't stand it. I am going to wean off it but I want to know which way would be best. I take 2 at pm and two in the am. should I go 1 at am and 2 at pm or 1-1/2 at each? ## Hello, Cheryl! How are you? If they had to do surgery to remove a tumor, then there is good reason they want you to stay on this, the trauma from the surgery can also create the risk of seizures. However, the good news is that you don't have to stay on Keppra, if it's causing you such problems. There are ot...

My bro had a tumor removed in 2009. He was prescribed Keppra. 500 mg bid prophalactily to prevent seizure. Fast forward to august of this year 2014 When after a brain scan. A tumor showed he was treated with radiation. Which made him very sick.myaremts came to fl to take care of him.last week someone noticed that his Keppra bottle said 1000 bid. My brother being sick and unaware increased the doss all at once since then his mobility has gone down and has become urinary incontinent. Went from cane to walker to unable to go. Could this be from the sudden increase of Keppra. His dose was in fact doubled all at once. Since I discovered this in speaking with him he said it was always 500 bid and his me over the years said if it works stay with it. If this is the problem how we get him back d...

I take keppra xr twice a day can i take flexall muscle relaxer pill while taking this medication. ## Hello, Dee dee! How are you? Did you mean the muscle relaxant Flexeril? If so, I didn't find any interactions listed between these medications, but it's always best to double check this information to be sure. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Flexeril as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache and dry mouth. Keppra's side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, mood swings and weight changes.

My KEPPRA has always been Yellow with H88 on it now my KEPPRA is White Oblong with M615 on it I have had 3 Seizures since taking the White Oblong. Can you please tell me the difference is and which Brand is Generic? ## Hello, Darlene! How are you? I'm sorry about the seizures you've been experiencing. These medications are listed as containing 500mgs of Levetiracetam, so both are generics for Keppra. Sometimes, seizures can still occur, while taking a medication to prevent them, but it is very unusual that you would suddenly have 3, when given the new tablets. According to the Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984, there can be slight fluctuations in the amount of the active ingredient from one generic medication to the next, they are allowed to different by as much as plus or minus 20% and ...

My boyfriend just got a new job and he's taking keppra. After work he drinks 2 half pints and stops @ 12am He then goes to work @ 9 am and they are telling him he smells like alcohol. Could his meds be being out what he had the night before.,? ## What is your boyfriend drinking? 2 pints of some kind of alcohol with the Keppra? The smelling like alcohol isn't the issue here! He is not going to wake up to go to work some morning! It's not only drinking that much, but drinking at all with medication is like playing Russian Roulette. It can very likely kill him. He needs to go into an Alcohol Rehabilitation Center NOW! Believe me! A friend of mine took her medicine and drank a 6-pack of beer and never woke up. Please try to get him help now! ## If he's drinking that much, ev...

Hello, I was tentatively diagnosed 6 weeks ago with partial simple seizures ( a weird feeling in abdomen that 'whooshes' it's way up to my head) and put on 1000 Keppra daily (500 twice a day.) Dr upped dose to 1500 daily. My question- can I take a 500 pill every 8 hours (6am-2pm-10pm) instead of 750 every 12 hours? The larger dose wipes me out. (Tried to condense and keep this short) Thanks for any help!! ## Hello, Ibis! How are you? You should follow your doctor's instructions for the amount to take and how often you should take it. The side effects, such as it making you feel wiped out, will only last about 3 weeks. You'll likely hit a couple of days, right around the 21 day mark, where it'll seem to get really bad, then things will start to improve. It is the ...

I need help in dealing with the anxiety and depression that comes with Keppra. I would like to know how others have dealt with it. ## Okay that was simple, let me add some detail. I used to be on lamotrigene (lamictal generic) and I was fine. I was happy. Normal. I'm normally a happy person. Keppra has recently been messing with my memory. So tonight, I took my usual 750 mg dose at the correct time... and then the worst thing happened. I completely forgot I took it. I may or may not have taken it. Either way I took the damn pill and the WORST panic attack ensued about 20 minutes later. I've been on Keppra for about 2 years and it seems like the longer I'm on it; the worse my anxiety gets. I used to NEVER get panic/depression/irritation like this, but just now I've experi...

Is it safe for my 13 year old daughter to take keppra and zzzquil ## Hi moni, According to the manufacturer's guidelines, the proposed age limit for Keppra (levetiracetam) is listed at 16; and for zzzquil the product warning label suggests that it should not be used in children under 12 years of age. I don't know if you are aware of this or not, but there was a recent documentary on high CBD strains of cannabis being used to prevent seizures in young children. I don't know which state you reside in, but the mayor of New Jersey actually legalized edibles for kids who have this condition after watching the documentary that aired on CBS. I'm not a doctor, but perhaps this natural alternative could be a more viable option with less side effects and warnings than Keppra (with...

I have been taking Keppra (3000MG per day) for over 20 years and am beginning to think some of my mental problems may be associated with the drug. I experience depression and a dryness of my mouth very often. Plus I am often confused (trouble focusing) and tired and cannot sleep. ## Hello, Noemi! How are you? Sorry about the problems that you're having. And yes, they could be due to the medication, but it is difficult to say with certainty. Have you consulted your doctor about the issue?

I have just been put on keppra 1000mg twice daily. I took my first dose yesterday and felt very confused, unsteady on my feet. Is that normal? Should I take a lower dose when starting off, perhaps 500mg and work my way up to the higher dose or Gould I just wait it out and hope that the symptoms reduce? ## Hello, Jen! How are you doing? Keppra contains the active ingredient Levetircetam, which is an anticonvulsant. Yes, those types of side effects are common from taking it and they should start to taper off in a few weeks, once your body starts to get used to the medication. If they don't, or if they get too severe, then please consult your doctor. Learn more Keppra details here. You may also experience nausea, mood swings and weight changes. Is there anything else I can help with?

Does Keppra cause an intense itch? My father was on Keppra for three years, then stopped for almost three months. He went back on it 2 x 500mg and about a month later developed an itch on his arms, back, and chest. ## He may have developed an allergy to it. Our bodies are always changing as time passes, so even if we were able to take something before, we can suddenly develop a reaction to it, if we try it again. Has he consulted his doctor about the problem? He may need to switch to a different medication. Learn more Keppra details here.
