Just Started Bystolic

Updated

I just started on bystolic and am unsure how often to take it. After 14 hours, my bp is very good, and a bit low. I don't know whether to take another with my bp at this rate(117/74). Would it drop too low? Should I take it anyway to remain on a schedule? So confused

Have you consulted your doctor?

You should definitely consult with your doctor, however, just as a general rule, blood pressure that is 90/60 or higher, is not considered dangerously low, unless it is causing you symptoms, such as nausea, dizziness and drowsiness.

117/74 is actually considered to be at a normal level.

How often has your doctor told you take it? Was it prescribed once daily, or twice daily?

As I've already stated, low blood pressure numbers, within reason, are not dangerous, unless they cause the symptoms I've mentioned.

Bystolic contains the active ingredient Nebivolol, which is a beta blocker and it may also cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and stomach pain.

Thanks for the reply. My dr pretty much said I could take it if I see it getting high. I found out today that the potassium levels are also high(6.2). I am terrified of all this. I am 46 and want to still have my life in front of me. Today, with the stress(I guess) of the blood test results, bp is shooting up way too high(170/100) and having to take more bystolic than usual. I am so scared.

Sandy, it really isn't as effective if used that way.

I am not sure why your doctor told you that, but for these medications to have their best effect at lowering blood pressure and keeping it under control, they have to be taken on a regular dosing schedule.

It can take 4 to 6 weeks for them to have their full effect in the body.

They also don't work that fast to lower it, when it shoots up like what you've experienced when being stressed and worrying over something.

Have you tried using it on a regular dosing schedule?

Thanks so much. Just started a regular dosing schedule. It's remained slightly high while scheduling the dose...the highest so far 158/93. Usually 132/83 most of the time...I'm now on 10mg in the evening. My bp seems to go up at night. I have taken a 5 mg during the day when it has spiked...today I am waiting on a potassium test result to see if I need hospitalization. So, I am definitely stressed & not shocked if I have some spikes today. This onset of high bp was very sudden and it's happened before, but it was years ago(over 10). It usually cleared up on its own, but not this time.

I was on Rythmol propafenone for five years then had ablation and pacemaker installed and Cardo said quit the Rythmol cold Turkey. I started feeling like I had been wrung out, weak and no energy and my GP Dr said the sudden stopping Rythmol probably was a shock since I had been taking it so long. Said let's try Bystolic 10MG daily and it really helped me get back to normal feeling good and energetic. I believe our pharmacist is a cut above and cautioned me Bystolic beta blockers are NOT a drug you can just quit taking or miss doses 'cause it has to do with blood pressure. I take Benazapril 20MG AM & PM and BP is always good. I like salt and try as I may, sometimes I OD on it. I watch my feet/toes and if they swell I take FUROSEMIDE 40MG tab once and makes me pee like crazy but swelling goes down & I lay off salt and good to go. But I only take Furosemide PRN, medical term for as needed.

Whatever your Dr says, do it. Mine said take the Bystolic once a day which I take with the BP pill about mid morning. Hope this helps & my best wishes to you to be well.

My Cardiologist is wonderful, he is very well known and respected. He said once per day, at the same time each day. You don't just take this drug at random times, b/c your bp is high at a given time. You need to be regimented about it, and don't go off of it cold turkey, you are suppose to be weined off of it. Try not to be scared anymore. If your doctor is telling you to just take it whenever you bp is high, then maybe it's time for a new doctor. Good Luck:)
