Jaw And Gland Pain And Swelling

One week ago I experienced pain & swelling below my right jaw & into my neck. I started on Amoxicillan, 500 mg. twice a day. I am still having problems. I am out of the country where I have health insurance and am reluctant to spend $1000. deductible on my travel insurance policy to see a doctor. Should I keep taking the medication and hope for the best?

You haven't seen doctor for it, at all yet?

If it is due to something such as a blocked saliva gland, or a cyst, the antibiotic may not really help much.

Is it sore to the touch? Are there any times that it appears to get worse, such as when you eat?

Have you had any dental problems that you're aware of?

Hi Verwon: To answer your questions, no I haven't seen a doctor yet. I did think about the possibility of a blocked saliva gland. It is sore to the touch.Doesn't hurt when I eat, have tried acidic foods, etc. Seems worse towards evening but have been able to sleep without pain for the last two nights. Had a dental checkup a few months ago and no obvious problems. I have been taking the antibiotic for five days now, so far today I'm not feeling too bad.
Do you think I should continue with the meds?

I suffered from the exact same thing for over 10 years. Finally a simple blood test revealed I had Sjogrens Syndrome. Its inflammatory but manageable. The ONLY thing that ever helps when I get that swollen gland and pain is a Z-pack. They have tried everything else. Only that works for me. I suggest you have your blood tested for Sjogrens when you get home.
