Jardiance And Weight Loss

I just recently started on Jardiance to assist in stabilizing blood sugar. I have Type 2 diabetes and struggle in keeping my A1C within normal range. This drug was added to help reduce sugar and possible weight loss. I am wondering what type of weight loss people are experiencing and what side effects if any. I am only on this med 5 days so far but urinating frequently, does it slow down after some time? That's what my doc said.

Thanks.

Hi Sue,

I have not tried the medication known as Jardiance (empagliflozin) for stabilizing blood sugar levels, but did want to share a brief general list of side effects I came across, courtesy of the FDA [1]:

- Hypotension (low blood pressure)
- Impaired Renal Function
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
- Genital Mycotic Infections
- Urinary Tract Infections (not sure if frequent urination may be related to this, but I suppose only time will tell if it slows down or not)
- Increased Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol

Although Jardiance is not technically approved for weight loss, the manufacturer had reported (in another article I read) that "modest weight loss" was observed during clinical trials. I can't put a number on the word "modest" but it sure sounds like some amount of weight loss is to be expected.

Hope this helps!

I have been on this med now for 7 months. I have lost about 45 pounds. It has really given me a food aversion, mostly I think about eating and then feel slightly nauseated. I pee frequently still, about once every 90 minutes. My thirst is frequently insatiable. I will drink several glasses of water, only to have my mouth go absolutely dry in an hour or so. I had to really monitor both blood pressure and blood sugar, and cut down the meds. Plus side: lost weight, A1C is down, insulins & blood pressure meds have been halved. Down side: Some days I think I will go insane if I have to pee one more time. I have had one bladder infection. It is hard to stay hydrated. I am also struggling with slight incontinence. I have stayed on this because for me the weight loss has been great and also the numbers and the lower medications. My advice is to hang in there.

Hi. I've been on this medication, jardiance for 10 days and lost about 7 lbs. My side effects were frequent urination, running to the loo with frequent bowel movements and feeling tired. Is this common?

I have been on jardiance 10mg for 3 weeks and have not lost weight. I am a diabetic. Is a 25mg dose better to lose weight with? I was on 100mgs of Invocana and did lose weight.
