It's a light purple and white capsule that hold
a solid white pill inside.

The size of the capsule is regular.

I take 4 a day, and have been doing that for 11 years.

Crystal Says:

At therapeutic doses, phenytoin produces horizontal gaze nystagmus, which is harmless but occasionally tested for by law enforcement as a marker for alcohol intoxication (which can also produce nystagmus). At toxic doses, patients experience sedation, cerebellar ataxia, and ophthalmoparesis, as well as paradoxical seizures. Idiosyncratic side effects of phenytoin, as with other anticonvulsants, include rash and severe allergic reactions.

Phenytoin may accumulate in the cerebral cortex over long periods of time, as well as causing atrophy of the cerebellum when administered at chronically high levels. Despite this, the drug has a long history of safe use, making it one of the more popular anti-convulsants prescribed by doctors, and a common first line of defense in seizure cases.

My partner is on Phenytoin and has severe mood changes such as alignateing his family and would be calm one minute and yell the next. He used to be a calm man. One day he got up and left. I blame it on the medicine. His brother committed suicide and since he has been on this medicine I fear he will do the same. Have you heard of such severe changes in mood due to this medicine.

You can get help thru the connection to care program. The financial advisor in your local hospital can help you fill the form out. Pfizer will dispense your meds, to your doctors office. Hope this helps. They usually send a four month supply.

The maximum recommended dose for Dilantin is 400mg [4x100mg] capsules per day.
If you are taking SIX x 100mg capsules, you are overdosing and it is a danger for more serious side effects and your doctor should no better. What a terrible indictment on the health system in your country when you cant get proper attention for the condition of which you speak.
I have just been diagnosed with Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma which can be caused by long term use of Dilantin. I have been on this medication for 40 YEARS and nobody told me of the serious list of side effects. I have MOST of the systems of side effects and am very angry. Seek proper help!

Nick Says:

Phenytoin IS what is in Dilantin and your dose is close to the max. Maybe talk to your doc about lowering the dose to 2 capsules X100 but check first. You don't want to having seizures.

There is a really bad side effect that you rarely read about with this medication and it is Steven Johnson Syndrome. It is caused by a mild allergy to the medication but the results can be horrific. I worked years ago as an RN and we had a pt whose entire body was like she had been skinned or dipped in boiling liquid. it was one of the most terrible sights I had ever seen. and trying to make her comfortable ws out of the question. then to top it off, she had diarrhea constantly which was like pouring acid on raw flesh. I don't know if she topped the therapeutic levels, but take this drug carefully.

I have been on dilantin since age 5. Both the 30mlg tablets and the 100mlg tab.(phenytoin). Now 38, I'm still on phenytoin 100mlg for seizures. I have long term side effects like periodontal disease and other things. I'm also on keppra and topamax. Are there any side effects that deal with menstrual periods and lack of having them. Do these meds after years of long term use cause you to lose/skip or stop having them for months at a time. My Dr has ruled out everything else that it could be.
