Is It Peri Menopause

Updated

Hi, I am 46 years old and am having irregular periods. I had a light period for two weeks and a migraine for the same amount of time. I usually have migraines with my periods. I went to my doctor and she prescribed Primolut N tablets to be taken 3 times a day until my period stopped. I took them for 3 days and my period and migraine went away. Two days later I got a migraine and my period restarted the next day. Is this normal? I don't know what to do.

Hello, Gayle! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you're experiencing.

If the doctor didn't find anything else wrong, then yes, it is most likely perimenopause.

At this point in life, we may not ovulate every month, which means we don't produce as much Progesterone as usual and that can cause irregular bleeding, more frequent bleeding, nausea, headaches, irritability and etc. This medication contains a form of Progesterone to try to help shut off the bleeding and stop the other symptoms. You can read more about it, if you'd like, on the NIH information pages.

Since you started bleeding again, after you stopped taking it, that's a good sign that this is just a normal process of aging. Only your doctor can say for sure, though.

I understand how annoying it can be, I'm 45 and in the middle of it myself, sometimes I feel so irritable that I just want to rips someone's head off. I usually end up going up to our bedroom and hiding, until it passes.

Are you on any other medications?

Hi Verwon, thanks so much for the reply. It feels good to be able to chat to someone else going through similar problems. I am also taking sertraline as I started struggling with anxiety and terrible mood swings about two years ago. They don't really help when I have a period though as I still am either anxious or like you say could rip someones head off. Gosh the things us woman have to deal with. Are you taking any medication at all? Do you know how long this phase of menopause lasts, I really want to go back to work but am worried about the time I would have to take off because of these migrains.
