Is Soma A Narcotic Muscle Relaxer?
(Newest replies first)

Updated

My doctor has told me that that soma is a narcotic and she does not want to prescribe it to me any more. I suffer from chronic back pain as well as muscle spasms. I have tried other muscle relaxers as well as anti inflamatories and none of then do not work. Soma is the only one I have found to work for me without making me sleepy. Any information you can give me i would really appreciate. Thank you, Dana

Re: Angela (# 86) Expand Referenced Message

You're quoting yourself? Dem's didn't take your DEA Black Box Warning Drug cocktail away, but they are trying to provide Cannabis.

I got sick of dealing with the opiate crap and went on Subutex. It works way better than opiates do anyway… lasts longer and you do not feel high, but that was never my goal. I just wanted pain relief and now I can not have my Xanax and very little Soma, but it’s better than nothing…

Re: Nappi (# 77) Expand Referenced Message

The DEA and Congress Dems are the problem. Not the Doctors. The DEA is messing with Drs.. It’s not their fault, it’s the s***ty laws fault.

If You Can Find Dan Somas

Re: bikerbonnie (# 10) Expand Referenced Message

I have took it for 30 yrs as well it’s not a narcotic they only reason it became a control is because of fentanyl overdoses some of them also had domain there system that’s the reason now they say it’s bad if you take it right there absolutely no danger at all all these addicts have ruined it for people that take there meds right and it’s the best and only muscle relaxer that ever helped my fibromyalgia ever that’s why I took it for 30 yrs I was discontinued after they made it a controlled drug and finally got a new Dr.. that would at least give me two a day needed 3 a day but he said DEA Woild mess with him so that’s all he could give me and the crazy generics do not compare to Dan Somas they work the best I know I have tried them all most of them are useless .. and weak…

Re: Abigal (# 4) Expand Referenced Message

It’s not a narcotic nothing in it is a narcotic just because people oded from fentanyl and they also had soma in there system is why they say it’s controlled does not mean it’s a narcotic Google it it’s not a narcotic period..

Re: Angela (# 79) Expand Referenced Message

Wow 40 years, 1982 was the first time I ever tried a Soma. I remember the young Pharmacist very interested in why I was taking this medicine? I have found it is much easier getting prescribed Xanax than a Soma. Xanax is evil, Soma is not! My old Doc does this whole comedy routine before he writes for Soma. When I was with Kaiser it was easier for the computer to approve refills of Soma before contacting the Doctor. I qualified for a free year of Kaiser, and continued to get refills of Soma for 3 years after my policy had ended, wild!

I Have taken Soma For over 30 years and I lost my Dr Due to insurance reasons … nothing to do with me … so the next Dr Decides after 30 years of taking Soma And Xanax 3 x a day decides to refuse to right me any ..I have been in bed For Over a year do to horrible debilitating Crippling pain from fibromyalgia and peripheral Neuropathy Neuropathy bad knees both torn meniscus torn Rotator cuff left one … Soma is the only Muscle relaxer that stops cramping legs arms severe muscle spasms and restless leg syndrome I have tried all other muscle relaxers and they make me sick and do not work… period Soma is my only relief … now my kidneys are failing from all the over the counter NSIDS making my kidneys fail all because this stupid control factor… Never had any issues with any of my meds… until now been in bed over a year in pain life sucks??

There is a special place in Hell for these Drs. Some day a distraught patient will hasten their journey, sadly.

Re: WillChillRNMS (# 72) Expand Referenced Message

What a sad but probably a true story, I know of no way to get opioids early no matter what has happened to them, that includes police reports. That is in my pain managers agreement..

I've had problems with Walgreens, they pretty much called me a drug addict. I normally go to a privately owned pharmacy but a couple of times I had to go elsewhere. I have heard the same about Walmart.

Re: HOUSE (# 70) Expand Referenced Message

I think a lot of the confusion here comes with the fact the scheduling of Soma varies widely from state to state. My state (Tennessee), has decided that Soma deserves to be treated as a schedule 3 narcotic. Therefore it cannot be filled early, and can only be filled every 30 days.

They did this b/c about 6 or 7 years ago; Online Pharmacies were selling Soma across state lines via Telemedicine Prescriptions, & people were abusing these services. This might be different in YOUR STATE, but it is certainly the case in mine.

Re: bikerbonnie (# 10) Expand Referenced Message

Yes, the lack of empathy and stark opioid phobia in our faces is a fact of our times. The fear behavior is so counterintuitive to what Physicians were educated and socialized to do. I don't know of any other profession that so cavalierly can look you in the face and tell you to suffer, get lost, they don't have to do a thing for you, and they don't care and they don't give a damn to care because they aren't required to do the right and ethical thing. Remember ethics committees? Well, most are in on the mid-evil approval of abandonment and therefore torture of patients secondary to refusing them effective medication that most have been taking for years. A nurse that moved in next to me had to retire early because of osteoporosis and debilitating pain from multiple broken bones. After disability retirement, she had new insurance and her MD there had less care in his body than a robot. She told me she went to her medicine cabinet after her daughter and son in law visited and half of her pain medication was missing. She filed a police report and immediately told this doctor. Instead of helping her, finding her a social worker or any productive way out of this they treated her like a drug addict. They said she violated the opioid agreement and tough effing luck. Kicked her to the curb where she had nowhere to turn. The apartment manager where she had just moved gave her a 3 day notice to leave or else. Why? Because the other renters said she wasn't friendly and seemed distracted. (people all I can say is there but for fortune and grace go you or I) I did all I could for her and didn't know she was kicked out of her home. She had no one to live with and couldn't function in such pain. They found her in the apartment dead from an OD from what was left of the pain meds. The stupid irony is a coroner will classify this as an Opioid OD instead of a suicide. Exacerbating further the histrionics of professionals. She was 53 years old. A nurse that helped people her whole adult life for God's sake. I'm sick of these cold-hearted fear-based unthinking providers that again for all else to see don't give a damn about people because they aren't obligated to. They are doing ungodly things to people because the assumption is that their professional status will assure they do otherwise. Well, wake up people, nobody is assuming anything when it comes to chronic pain. You're on your own. SOMA is NOT a narcotic. Next, it's going to be aspirin and urine screenings. If you're not fighting back you aren't awake.

OK people, let's be nice....We are all frustrated about loosing the best muscle relaxer just about ever made. Ok...Soma is NOT a narcotic BUT it is is classified as one.as one said a class IV drug by the DEA..And the closest thing for relief that I've taken and I tried just about all that I could to match Soma including Zanaflex. I've used Norflex and got pretty good relief when I had my knee replacement surgery but don't expect that Soma feeling. They are nothing like Soma and not as effective but closer and better than most of the others. They space you out completely and 2 to 3 will probably make you sleep which wasn't so bad when you're in pain.
