Is Methotrexate A Steroid

Updated

I am on a course of methotrexate. Is this drug a steroid and would it stop me from losing weight and my metabolism moving?

No, it is not a steroid, it is an antimetabolite and antifolate drug.

The most common side effects are nausea, dizziness, low white cell count and abdominal pain.

I'm on 10mg of methotrexate once weekly for dermomyostitis , so far I've noticed mostly extreme fatigue after taking second dose. I am now on forth week of taking it I did have nausea first two times but with taking folic acid 800mcg everyday an other vitamins an also put on 50000 units vitamin D once weekly. I'm able to now walk an move better an less pain an overall weakness especially in lower torso I just want to know if there is anymore side affects I can expect I heard on low dose you probably won't loose hair with taking folic?

Hi I am on 10mg once weekly and taking 800mcg folic daily, I am on my 8th week of taking methotrexate, I am doing better, less weakness in lower torso and can move my arm above my head, i can now get up from a sitting position, which believe me was impossible. after first couple doses the side affects arent really bad anymore, i was on prednizone before 60mg daily which they tapered me of quckly due to bone pain. I noticed with the predinizone my hair became very brittle and broke off and some just fell out al around the top area, got very thin and I have some bald spots around my ears and behind. I dont think the methotrexate at low dose with the folic taken every day will cause hair loss, im noticing that my hair is growing slowly back now that I am off the prednizone. Good luck to you, this disease is no fun.. But it can get better.

I take 7 tablets every week and folic acid every day except the day i take the methotrexate and I cannot seem to lose weight. Is weight gain normal? I would liek to say it is under control but although the red blotches may reduce in size they never completely go away only move around my body.

I have read a number of the postings and sympathise with anyone having Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Dealing with the pain is the main issue. I have been on tablets in some shape or form for 20 years. I started playing football for a team called Fat Dads 10 years ago. Best thing I've done. It is painful sometimes but I never use that as an excuse not to play. Playing helps my metabolism and circulation to distribute the tablets, which in turn makes them more effective. Like all of us suffering with Rheumatoid Arthritis you have good and bad days. I turned 50 a couple of weeks ago and still managed 90 minutes on the pitch last night, not ready for walking football yet.

I have been told by my potential new insurers that Methotrexate is a steroid, is this right? Don't want to accused of having an unfair advantage on the football pitch.

I was diagnosed with Lupus about 10 years ago and I was taking Prednisone by mouth and Methotrexate shots every week. Also I was Remicade shots every month. This went on for about a year. Then I broke my femur and was taken to Mayo Clinic in Rochester. The doctors there tested my blood etc and they. Said that I did not have Lupus. Previous blood test was also done in Mayo and all meds were stopped. I do not have Lupus anymore but I do have severe Artheritis. My doctor does not think it is RA because the blood tests do no indicate so. Every part of body hurts. Help!

I start today. I'm so nervous. I've never been on any meds in my life. I'll be 40 in May. Thanks for these comments.

I have not taken Methotrexate for a long time about ten years ago. That was along with prednisone and Ramicade. These drugs were fo a possibly misdiagnosed Lupus or my Lupus went into remission! I have severe Osteo Artheritis and I am in a lot of pain. I was wondering if I could try Methotrexate again. Any thoughts!

Hi, I am on my seventh week of taking MTX. The first six weeks I was taking 10mg a week and 1 folic acid per week. Now on my 7th week and have been upped to 12.5. Apart from feeling constantly tired I have been putting on weight even though I am on WeightWatchers. So whilst it may be improving my psoriasis which was making me very miserable.... I am still feeling miserable because of the weight gain!!

I have been taking northotrexate once a week since Oct 10, 2016 for psoriasis. I have gained over 10 pounds. I exercise 2 to 3 times a week, but have joint problems. I'm 58. My eating habits have not changed. Very rarely do I eat processed food or fried foods or dessert type food. Can you tell me if I'm gaining because of the medication?

I know how you feel Lizabeth. I'm feeling good knowing my psoriasis is going away nicely, but I don't enjoy having to buy new clothes that are XL--I feel huge! I'm also taking folic acid about 6 days a week with the methotrexated once a week. Hang in there though!

Susan, I'm on the same dosage as you are and am seeing the same effects. My psoriasis has not gone away completely, but now am no longer embarrassed about showing my arms and legs. I am experiencing major fatigue and weight gain. It doesn't seem to be helping my RA though, so I'm not exercising at the intensity that I would like.

unfortunately weight gain is a side effect...thay call it a wonder drug...but you need to be aware of the side effects...you have to weigh the good against the bad..

I am in Methodextrate once a week.. Also on Cosentyx, two injections once a month, after five weeks of weekly. Also take Folic Acid to keep my locks... We don't eat fast food.. Cut that crap 10 years ago. I quit diet soda five plus years ago.. We cut starches and breads, pasta, and more nine months ago. I walked six miles a day... Since RA deformed my L foot 14 months ago, I have cut my route by 4.5 miles, per Dr. I have gained over ten pounds!!!
RA Dr. claims not from the meds... Idk.. It's depressing!! Is anyone else gaining weight on this crap? Do I feel better? No. Would I feel worse? Idk. The weight gain is not welcome! My neighbor is ten plus years older than me, takes Metho pills, and is very large. Not active. I do NOT want that!! Thank You!!!

I was on Methotrexate for a length of time. I was on Prednisone previously. I started having terrible dental problems. Went off and had couple good check ups. Started generic Imuran and terrible dental problems again. Went off. Wish I knew what my cause was for sure. Was on these drugs for autoimmune.

Re: Graham (# 6) Expand Referenced Message

Don’t worry, it is not a steroid, nor will it give you any kind of physical advantage in any way. Actually, it is an anti-metabolite- however because it has many of the same uses as steroids and for the same conditions and they are often switched between as doctors consider how effective they are for each patient and how they respond, so it is a common misconception that methotrexate is kind of grouped in as a steroid. It is a similar “level” of treatment with a similar side effect profile to a steroid, but it does not do the same thing, and should not cause any concern for sports drug panels if you have a prescription for it.
