Gabapentin is not a narcotic. It effects the nervous system and is given to control a variety of conditions which cause nerve pain. Gabapentin is often used for neuropathy, degenerative back pain and quite simply, diseases and syndromes where the nerves stop functioning correctly and give us pain instead. I went off of Fentanyl a year ago following 5 years of prescribed use. I would gladly go off of it again than give up my Gabapentin after 8 years of use. It is often more effective than narcotics at controlling nerve pain and stopping it should be discussed with your Dr first.

They say gabapentin is not a narcotic but I can't take it at work because it makes me to loopy. Why is that?

Gabapentin is famous for a wide array of side effects, such as dizziness, drowsiness, unsteadiness, weakness, tired feeling, lack of coordination, double vision, and confusion.

All doctors will say it's a narcotic. They will flat out lie to you just so they don't have to prescribe real pain medication. Take a 300mg Gabapentin one day, then next day take a 30mg Oxycodone and see which works better! Believe me you will feel the difference.

The big chain stores are not allowed to give you any sort of drug to hold you over, only small mom and pop pharmacies are allowed to. I refuse to ever go to CVS or Walgreens , they lie and will call you names. My grandma
that is dieing of cancer went to fill a simple low dose pain medication and they refused to fill her medication because the pharmacist said "well you don't look sick", she has no hair from the chemo therapy and lost her leg. So she took off her wig and unstrapped her leg and putting them on the pharmacy counter and told the pharmacist do i look sick now? The pharmacist got all mad and embarrassed and still refused to fill her medication, it's a sad thing is it's totally unfair, but it's legal for the pharmacist to say no.

No Joe, it is proving not effective for all kinds of pain that it is scripted for. Recent medical journals are calling for a reevaluation of the types of pain it should be working for.

Re: Psl772 (# 39) Expand Referenced Message

Gabapentin is a central nervous depresent. It can cause some people to nod and even have respiratory adverse events. Everyone is not the same. Some people do ok.. others it can effect them adversely and nodding being one of them. It happened to me and I have researched it.

No it is not. It is not even a "controlled" medication. I had no idea that it was addictive because it is not labeled, like others that are. I was in Jamaica for a month, and I realized I had to start taking it twice a day, rather than the prescribed TID. By the time we were flying home, I was "out", so I called CVS and told them to refill it. They said I needed authorization and they said "your neurosurgeons office has NOT responded to 2 faxes. We will give you (2) days supply, until you can call him yourself." I HAD called him myself from Jamaica, and nobody picked up (on a FRIDAY) and I got no voicemail. We got to CVS at 12:15AM, and the pharmacist, said "I have no idea what you are talking about. There is no message here about you." I was sweating, shaking and when we got in the door, I was in a rage. I used my INDICA vape pen, to get me to fall asleep. When I woke up, the NEUROSURGEON still had not responded to my "portal" message to his office, so, I woke my primary care doctor on the 4th of JULY. He called in a month supply. THERE IS NO "C" before the RX # or an "N" for narcotic. If you read the side effects, it says "do not go off this medication without notifying your doctor." I hope this helps you. My neurosurgeon is kicked out of CVS.

Really? I never heard of an OBGYN prescribing Gabapentin for menopause, ever. Sounds wrong on all levels.
Nerve pain....menopause....nerve pain med for erratic hormones, hot flashes, vaginal dryness?

Re: Kristyne (# 48) Expand Referenced Message

You are misinformed because as of July 1 2017 gabapentin is a schedule 5 controlled substance in the state of Kentucky

Re: John boy (# 50) Expand Referenced Message

Gabapentin is a controlled substance in Ohio and Kentucky officially a scheduled 5. Gabapentin is being treated as controlled in all 50 states per a memo from the Government asking pharmacist to do so. That means no early refills and tighter controls on prescriptions. But, Gabapentin is not a narcotic. Narcotic's are synthesized from Opium to make pharmaceutical drugs. Gabapentin is a anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug. That is designed negatively impact Synaptic plasticity and synaptogenesis of Receptor a2d-1. A pharmaceutical does not have to be opium-based to be scheduled.

I read "they" are trying to reclassify it. I took it with zero problems for 6 months. Then I started getting really emotional. I cried for 3 days, and called my primary care doctor as my neurosurgeon went to China. He called in 100MGs and told me to "wean slowly". What does that tell you?

Anything that you have to WEAN OFF of SHOULD be at least, controlled. I hate the side effects. I am super sensitive to many medications. During my last fusion, I had to have some "Jose Cuervo" antibiotic that is super expensive because I am allergic to every other antibiotic.

Hope this helps you feel validated. I care.

I know right! I'm not a woman and I can tell it would totally be wrong to prescribe that for menopause. I'm glad to see people responding that are educated and intelligent. Have a good day.

No it is not.it helps with nerve damage only, its not a pain med or anything like that. Some people feel a little groggy when they take it and others don't. But it's not considered a narcotic. Just be careful when takin until you know how your body reacts to it.

Re: Vickki1000 (# 51) Expand Referenced Message

Doctors are prescribing it for pain instead of real pain medication, so don't be fooled. Take 300mg of Gabapentin and see how well it works for pain then take 2 30mg Oxycodone and see which one works better. Believe me Oxycodone will work 1000X better for pain, without any side affects. Common sense people

Re: RN in virginia (# 23) Expand Referenced Message

RN please be kind, this person was told correctly that in his state Gabapentin is scheduled. To most people when they think the word "scheduled" they think "narcotic". That is a misunderstanding of what makes a medication scheduled. That doesn't make it wrong or spreading misinformation. Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia Gabapentin is a scheduled 5 medication. Mass and Oklahoma are in the works of scheduling it. Other states are moving in that direction. Gabapentin is not federally scheduled yet. Gabapentin is staged to be a class c scheduled medication and they are voting on storage and asking for public opinion as we speak. Research what schedule 5 means for your state. It's the lowest schedule there is. It usually means a limit in the number of refills on a bottle and no early refills if lost or stolen. It usually meant the scripts are being monitored. Different states may have a few differences between them.
