Is Cymbalta Helpful For Anxiety ?

Updated

I am 53 & never taken any meds other than aspirin, except Percoset lately for headaches from an annyerism surgery. I realized it helped with my anxiety. Dr. wants to put me on Cymbalta instead. Should I stay on Percoset or switch to Cymbalta ? Which side effects are worse ?

Sorry, but it sounds like you are addicted to percoset. Many anti-depressants can help with addiction, and Cymbalta has been approved to treat some types of pain, but I don't think you should start if its anxiety that you are reporting. The percoset is only dulling your senses at this point. I'm guessing that it's physically jittering to NOT take it. That is not the same as anxiety from a psychiatric disorder, which usually starts earlier in life. It's like say you were feverish, so you started wearing a big sweater, then your fever went away but you kept wearing the sweater because you were used to it. The sweater is getting itchy and hot... maybe you should take it off and re-adjust to the normal temperature instead of trying on a big jacket to see if that will make you feel better.

I think it's premature to judge someone as being addicted from just one post with very little information in it.

Percocet can have such an effect on some people, such as easing anxiety, which is why some people do end up addicted to it and that is likely why the doctor in question wants to make this change, as a precautionary measure to prevent addiction.

Nanny, that is the most likely reason, Percocet contains Acetaminophen and Oxycodone, so it's a narcotic analgesic with habit forming tendencies.

Cymbalta contains the active ingredient Duloxetine, which is an SNRI antidepressant and yes, it has been shown to help with anxiety and is approved to be used to treat it. These types of medications are often more helpful than some of the other options, since you take these everyday and their effects are ongoing, while with many others they have to be taken as needed so a person could have a severe anxiety attack and have to suffer for awhile, until they kick in and begin to work.

This medication may cause some side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and weight changes.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Gretchen I am not addicted to Percoset since there are days when I only take 1/2 of a pill for pain. What I meant is that I noticed it relaxes me & I haven't had an anxiety attack since taking it. Yes I have been getting anxiety since a teenager & suffer threw them without meds. Part of my problem is I don't like or trust meds...ughhh, totally my issues that I am finally seeking help of a Dr. for after all these years. It wasn't until me being operated on that I had to convince myself I had these meds in the hospital & nothing happened & I will be OK if I take it for the pain.I am just nervous about switching meds.
