I accepted this perscription as ambien or its generic zolpidem is for short term use and was no longer effective and I had been on it for a long time. I read the ingredients in rozerem and was disturbed by "black shellac" as the 2nd to last ingredient listed, but took my first pill 30 minutes before bedtime as instructed. I woke in the middle of the night extremely nauseated and eventually returned to sleep, however upon waking in the morning, felt nauseated still. Took hours for the nausea to wear off and spent all yesterday in a sluggish state of being. Did not repeat taking the pill last night and woke today feeling fine. I did resume taking ambien and got to sleep easily with no unpleasant side effects. Would appreciate others feedback and a moderators explanation of 'black shellac'. The pharmacist I called was reluctant to explain, but said, stop taking it. Thank you for your feedback in advance.

Hello, Nelli! How are you doing?

Rozerem contains the active ingredient Ramelteon, and is used to help with insomnia.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, and fatigue.

Ref: Medline Plus Rozerem

Has it worked for you?

Laurie, which specific medication where you taking? Can you provide more details, such as who manufactured it, or what the markings were on the tablet?

If you are referring to Rozerem, it is not a generic for Ambien, since it does not contain Zolpidem as the active ingredient.

The name brand's inactive ingredients may include:

Lactose monohydrate, starch, hydroxypropyl cellulose, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, copovidone, titanium dioxide, yellow ferric oxide, polyethylene glycol 8000, and ink containing shellac and synthetic iron oxide black.

As you can see from this, they don't contain black shellac, but rather use a small amount of ink for the imprint on them which contains shellac, and synthetic iron oxide black.

The nausea itself is considered a normal side effect of this medication, as you can see from the reference I posted above.

Small amounts of ink, shellac, and other various substances are frequently used in many medications, as long as they are on the FDA list of items that are generally considered safe when consumed in such miniscule amounts.

FDA Generally Recognized as Safe Information

In some cases, we don't even digest the outside of a pill, or break down such inks, instead they are expelled as waste.

I am impressed, though, that you actually read the entire list of ingredients, as most people don't bother. You are unique, and refreshing.

Is there anything else I can help with?
