Ingrediants In Metoprolol

Updated

I am taking Metoprolol,25 mg.,and have been taken off Amlodipine. My pill is white, and labeled M18 with nothing on the other side. Can you please tell me,what medications are combined in it. I have not seen anyone else write about this particular drug.My pulse went down to 30,and I now have a pacemaker,to keep it from dropping below 60. Prior to that,My pulse went up to 140. I only take the Metoprolol, when my pulse gets high.I am also taking Lisinopril, when my Blood Pressure gets to high.If I take the Lisenopril and the Metoprolol,in combination,my blood pressure gets to low,so I cannot take them at the same time,it gets very frustrating. Do you think I should seek a second oppinon from a cardiologist,my cardiologist, told me Metoprolol, would not be lowering my B.P., he said it had no effect on my B.P. I researched this and found indeed it does lower B.P. Thanks

Hi CeCe,

I'm sitting here trying to figure out why your cardiologist told you that a blood pressure medication has no effect on your blood pressure? Metoprolol is in a class of medications called beta blockers; which can be used alone or in combination with other drugs to treat high blood pressure. It works by relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate to improve blood flow and decrease blood pressure.

NOTE: Metoprolol is the only active ingredient in and of itself. So there really shouldn't be anything else in it that you may not know about (other than binders/fillers).

For your own safety though, I would honestly consider switching cardiologists to one that actually knows what they are talking about. A simple Google search proves that Metoprolol is a medication for hypertension. The fact that someone of his profession couldn't take a few minutes to provide you with this information, let alone give you false details about it, shows that he doesn't really care, in my opinion.

You can learn more about this drug on the page for Metoprolol Details

I hope this info helps!

Thank you David for your reply.I am definitely not using the cardiologist I had any longer.I am seeing a new one at the Austin Heart Hospital on Friday. The reason the doctor put me on Metoprolol to begin with, was because They discovered I had A-Fib,when my my Pulse rate all of a sudden went up to 140.By the time I got to the hospital,it was down to 130,they gave me meds through and IV,got me stable, and then I was sent to a hospital in Austin. I was there 6 days. When I got out,I went to see the doctor who saw me at the hospital. He put me on the 25 mg of Metoprolol. He said I would have to begin taking warfin also to keep from having a stroke and thin my blood. I took it for about three months, and during that time my blood pressure was all over the place, but my pulse did not go real high again. The warfarin made me very sick,my stomach was hurting very bad, extreme headaches, and black stools with diaherrea. I told the heart specialist about it,and he said to continue taking it for two more weeks and see how I did.I did so,and was very sick when I went to the coumadain clinic to get blood test. The doctor there was very concerned. He said I looked terrible, and he called my heart specialst and said I was coming right over, and they took me. My heart doctor took me off the coumadain, and in about a week,I was much better. One day my heart was really beating weird, and I felt faint, foggy headed.I checked my Pulse and B.P.,and my pulse was down to 30...just the reverse of what had happened the first time.I was taken to the Er once again, they stabilized me,and sent to me Austin,I was in ICU 5 days. They decided I had to have a pacemaker because things were not working out with the meds. I was still on 10 mg.,of Lisinopril, and taking 25 mg of Metoprolol a day,The ardiologist told me to take it twice daily.I told him I could not because my blood pressure went down to low,It went down to 105 over 40and I would get dizzy and have heart palpations. The cardiologist assured me on four diiferent doctor visits, that Metoprolol had no effect on my blood pressure.I could have died, and not sure now if the pacemaker was necessary. My B.P still goes high, and my pulse still goes high,so when my B.P. goes high,I take Lisinopril, which I have cut down by 1/2 myself, and when my pulse goes go high,I take 12and 1/2 mg,of Metoprolol. That is the only way I can keep my BP from dropping to low.It is so frustrating, and I take my B.P six times a day. When they put my pacemaker in,the lead wires came lose just an hour after surgery, they had to go back in the next day and reattach the lead lines.I just want my meds straightened out so I can live a normal life again,,,,,,Thanks David so much for your help, and I won't be seeing that cardiologist again ever!!!!!
