Imipramine Long Term Usage

Updated

I have been taking Imipramine for my panic and anxiety disorder for 23 years. I am now up to 150 milligrams per day. It is still working for my anxiety, but over the last year I'm starting to have weird symptoms. Fast heart beat (went to cardio doctor a few years ago and he says it was normal) heart fluttering, excessive sweating while exercising, facial numbness, body twitching, fatigue, dizziness. I also just turned 50 and am e o weir called big menopausal symptoms. I'm a mess!! It is very hard to find any articles on very long term I promise use. Anyone have any experience with any of these symptoms??

Like I think you said it could be very well due to menopause and/or a combination of your body adjusting to the tofranil with less hormones. I seriously doubt that after 23 years of taking a tricyclic anti-depressant that you would suddenly have an adverse reaction to it. But hey i'm no doctor!

In this case if the symptoms become too overbearing consult your prescribing doctor and maybe an OG-GYN. Most doctors don't even prescribe TCA's anymore but since you've been on them for so long it wouldn't make sense to change now.

Best of luck to you. Hope you get it figured out. Glad that your ticker is okay that's quite important!

Has your doctor done any blood work to check your hormone levels?

Just as you stated, and as Mason has also said, those can all be symptoms of perimenopause, or menopause, according to NIH studies. I'm 46 and in perimenopause, I have to say that there times the body twitching drives me crazy, it's even woke me up a few times. I'm not even going to get into the night sweats, and hot flashes.

Yes. I actually had blood work last May and then last week. I am also in perimenopause. I just turned 50. My blood results from last week were normal, except my platelets were high. Getting retested in two weeks to see if they are still high or back to normal. I have felt better the past week and then tonight had another dizzy spell. This sucks!!! Thanks for getting back to me!!
