I Hate My Pm Dr & Am Considering Weaning Off My Meds At Home

Updated

I am a 60 year old female. I was in a roll-over car accident in 1973, just before my 19th birthday. I spent 3 weeks in the hospital in traction. Every so often the pain would drive me to seek medical treatment. This went on for more than 30 years. I've tried just about everything to alleviate the agony, even an epidural about 20 years ago. 4 1/2 years ago I found a pm dr. She was a total b****. After 3 years, my drug panel was positive for thc once & told me "I'd be more than happy to wean you off your meds & you can have your street drugs". In CA, medicinal marijuana is legal, but remains a federal crime. After leaving her, I found another pm dr. I jumped from the frying pan into the fire. The dr I chose is worse! I've been seeing him for 18 months. I really dislike this guy, to put it mildly & don't trust him at all. He recently decided he would no longer be prescribing soma. He told me I'd be supported during the weaning process, but my calls were never returned. I managed to do it alone over a 24 day period.

The med he then prescribed (tizanadine) caused horrendous side fx, which he didn't believe, thinking it was a ploy to go back to soma & to told me to either use an OTC anti-inflamatory (I told him on my 1st appt I couldn't take ANY type of anti-inflammatory due to G.I. problems) or to keep taking the tizanadine. Currently, I am not taking any type of muscle relaxer. He told me I could try Skelaxin, but never called or faxed a prescription to my pharmacy. He is now on vacation for a month. Between 2010 & 2014, I had 2 cervical fusions due to spinal cord compression; anterior C4-C7, posterior C2-C6. Future surgical intervention remains a strong possibility. The pain & nerve damage is extensive & permanent. I have also "lost" several discs in my T & L spine, along with oodles of arthithus. I've also lost my fine motor skills in both hands along with feeling. It isn't unusual to burn my arms & hands because I can't feel ambien heat. It appears all he cares about is his license & the DEA. I am so weary of the way I'm treated, I'm considering weaning off the meds I use (not abuse). I'm on 37mcg fentanyl. I can't tolerate any more than that & 10mg of Norco, as needed. I have NEVER asked for an increase of any medication. I stay well within the amounts prescribed.

I actually take much less & have enough medications to last a minimum of 6 months or more. I don't consider myself a "drug addict". My diagnosis is CPS/intractable pain. It's all too real, but I can no longer tolerate being treated the way he & his staff act toward me. At a recent appt, I was in extreme pain. In tears, I begged him to give me 2 trigger point inj's., knowing it would only last an hour or so. He told me he "didn't have time". I know if I asked about an epidural, he'd trip over his own feet to schedule it. I shouldn't have to wait more than a week for a call to be returned. Even my pharmacy doesn't have their calls returned in what would be considered a timely manner. I suspect that without the meds I'll not be able to move at all. I have no quality of life now; I don't know what my life will be like without the meds. This guy doesn't even know that pain can cause depression, in & of itself, or cause depression to worsen. What I'd like to know is this: if I decide to wean off, should I start with the fentanyl 1st, then the norco? And how slowly I should I take to wean myself off?

You should concentrate on finding a new Doctor?

Due to abuse many drs have stopped rxing Soma. In some states it is a Schedule II. You do need to find a new dr. A new dr will want copy of your medical records from your current dr. It would also be a good idea to have them get copies of your medical records from the dr that diagnoised you with and is treating you for your the GI problems. GI problems alone aren't enough to prevent a patient from taking certain meds. But, if the GI probems are severe enough that you're currently receiving treatment, your medical records from the dr would be proof.

I only see one State where it is a Schedule 2 medicine, Louisiana, and that wouldn't be a Federal schedule, it would be controlled by the state?

EDDY, that is correct. A state can have stricter laws than federal. The one that is the more stringent is the one that applies.
