If the swelling has gone down, but you are still experiencing that much pain, then you should consult a doctor, again.

It is not normal to have severe pain, from a healing sprain, so my concern is that there may be a fracture, or something that they missed. Swelling can sometimes cause them to be missed, if it is severe, at the time they do x-rays.

Have you consulted your doctor, again?

there are a lot of more powerfull drugs out there but good like in getting them. It will depend on the relationship you haveith your dr. Last Fri the 9th I had a fallwent straight to the ER around 2PM. They did an xray and told me I had a hairline fracture of the l arm right at the elbow. They gave me a shot for pain and an rx for percocet. I got home and about 4 hrs later i had pain 100 times worse than when i went to the er the first time.well because i take ms cotin 60 mg 3x day for fibromyalgia the pa at the hospital treated me like a drug addict. i was crying my eyes out.then they did more xrays and said i was pretending to have that much pain because the new exrays didn't show a fracture. I have never ever in my life had anyone scream at me like that in medical setting. Finaly i said i want to see a dr. well a real dr did come in and was verry nice to me. today 3days after the fall i went to see an ortho dr and she said yes indeed i do have a fracture. i am still at a loss as to what i should do. the pa didn't just raise her vioce she continued to scream for probaby 5 minutes or more.and then sent in anothwer pa tosay there was nothing at all wrong with me.i didn't go in the hosp asking for pain meds. i just wanted answers.

MaggieMay, you should actually report that to the hospital board. There isn't really anything else you can do, but at least if you report it, they may be reprimanded, or even fired for their behavior.

Treating someone like that is unacceptable, even if they are drug seeking. If someone has that suspicion about someone, there are better ways to handle it.

I COMPLEATLLY AGREE THEY NEED TO BE REPRAMANDED AT THE VERY LEAST. MY WIFE IS A MODEL AND SHE IS SKINY SHE WILL NOT GO TO THE HOSPITALS IN OUR TOWN ANY MORE UNLESS SHE IS DEATHLY SICK SHE HAS A VERY LARGE KNOTT ON HER NECK GOING UP THE BACK OF HER SKULL AND INSTEAD OF ASKING PROFESSIONALLY IF SHE TAKES ANY STREET DRUGS THEY ALL ASSUME MY WIFE IS A METH HEAD AND FOR A YEAR SHE PUT UP WITH DIFFERANT DOCTORS TREATING HER LIKE THAT AND ONLY GIVING HER PILLS AND SENDING HER AWAY FINNALLY SHE TOLD ME HOW THEY WERE TREATING HER SO I WENT WITH HER AND SURE AS HELL THE FIRST THING THEY ASKED HER WAS WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU DONE METH I GOT MAD AS HELL THAT AINT RIGHT YOUR SUPPOSED TO ASK IF SHE DOES ANY STREET DRUGS AND YOU FLAT OUT CALLED HER A TWEEKER. THEN WE TOLD THE DR SHE DID NOT WANT JUST PILLS WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS REALLY WRONG AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE BESIDE JUST TAKING PILLS THE DR SAID ITS JUST MUSCLE SPASMS THEN HE GAVE HER WEAKER PILLS THAN HE HAD BEEN GIVING HER SO WE WENT OUT OF TOWN TO A DIFFERANT DR AND WE FOUND OUT THAT IT WASNT JUST MUSCLE SPASMS SHE COULD HAVE DIED SHE HAD A ANURISM AND IF IT WOULD HAVE POPED SHE WOULD BE DEAD SO YEAH THESE DOCTORS THAT YELL AT PEOPLE AND JUST PLAIN TREAT PATIENCE BAD NEED TO SEE HOW IT FEELS BY LOSING THERE JOBS CAUSE THERE ATTITUDE WILL COST SOMEONE THERE LIFE ONE DAY

i completlely agree with you shonie that was just neglectful careless b.s. i hate to turn this around or take the doctors side about the management and allowance of narcotic pain killers however there are reasons doctors are "stingy" prescription pill abuse is an epidemic. besides the fact that all doctors prescriptions written for narcotics are monitored horrificley closely. every day they must weed through the addicts . and try there best to not get anyone hooked . its there job as well to give you literally just enough to make your pain tolerable . its also a fact that the only patients prescribed what we would consider " good ones" are terminally ill patients or patients who are just barely holding onto breath. medications like oxy contin 80 mg opana , 100 mg oxycodone, dilauted, fentynol, methadone. . . one more exception also is the chronic long term pain management patients . a good guess would say that probably about 1/3 of these patients are getting them to either get high or to sell their prescription on the street . the sad thing is the ones that actually need these strong medications suffer becuase of the people abusing there doctors and manipulating to get stronger and stronger pills. causing regulations to get harder and harder. and we wonder why i cant go to the e.r. and get those 15 mg oxycodones that "work good" they struggle to find a balance

I am one of those "pain management" patients you referred to. I totally disagree with your statement that many of us are trying to either feel high, or get drugs to sell on the street. Obviously you've never had chronic pain, and for that, you should be thankful. I take the medicines my doctor prescribes, and am only ever about 50%-60% out of pain. I take methadone, which in small doses is a great medicine for pain. When I walk into any ER and tell them what drugs I take, and I only take methadone for pain, nothing else, they assume I'm either a recovering street drug addict, or I am a recovering narcotic addict. I had to be admitted to the hospital because I had a severe MRSA infection, and was there 3 days. They would NOT give me any thing for pain the entire time I was there. I cried and begged. I was miserable. It's pathetic that because ppl have the mindset that everyone that's in pain management are seekers, ppl like me with legitimate chronic pain, I am missing 4 vertebrae and 5 discs in my lumbar spine and have DDD, have to suffer. I wish somehow ppl could see the truth.

My wife had that same experience today, PA's are glorified wannabe drs and don't know how to treat paitients. They should be fired on the spot if that happens

This post got hijacked quickly. Before I say what I want let me first say this: It's understandable that you are mad for being treated how you were. I agree it was very unprofessional of them to assume anything about you.

You have to also think about it from the caregiver's side: if you come in complaining of back/ankle/neck pain but there's nothing to prove it (I'm not saying you're not in pain, but "pain" doesn't register on an MRI or X-RAY) then they are naturally going to be cautious as to if you're just seeking medication to sell.

Because everyone like to be aggressive let me provide you with some information about me so you can get back: my dad is an orthopeadic surgeon so my opinion is biased. But I do know that he is very respectful of the requests and complaints of his patients. I sprained my ankle very badly yesterday and could not walk on it at all and he said the only medicine I need was anti-inflammatory. In my case, which I'm sure differs from the original post, there was no need for a stronger pain medication. They are weary about prescribing opiates for "minor" injuries due to the fact that people will sell them.

Sorry this was so long I kind of went off on a tangent.

I had a very similar situation, and 5 days later, I was partially paralyzed and my organs had started shutting down! (I was IN the hospital, so one would think I'd have gotten good care, right?) It was the doctors & nurses who were the PROBLEM! Because they couldn't figure out what was wrong, they presumed I was a nut job …. meanwhile, I became septic, MRSA was at my spine and in the 11th hour, a neurosurgeon was brought in (but a friend who's a doc, NOT my treating docs!), and when he opened my spine, the problem was obvious! Had I not had access to friends who are docs, I'd be DEAD today. So SPEAK UP if you've been mistreated by those wannabe medical professionals! You have rights!

Mitch you mentioned MRI not showing pain, however, it does show the cause(Es) of the pain. The extent of trauma will equate to the scale of the pain. Add to that the variables of tolerance to pain, environmental exacerbators, mental health in general and primary to dx and length of time having the issue(Es). Being an Ortho's son, well seems you'd think of that. JS

about 15 years ago my father had his first back surgery and since then he had five more including a fusion. due to the large amount of scar tissue and degeneration of the discs, he is in constant pain. He was going to a pain management doctor who was literally giving him 2400 milligrams of morphine per day. he stopped going to the doctor and his new doctor drastically reduced his dosage to 200 milligrams day.

flash forward about two years and my father had a stroke. he had a tia?(pre-stroke, warning stroke?) at the house and immediately went to the hospital. he literally walked into the hospital from the ambulance.
while at the hospital he had the real stroke. the nurse didn't check on him for 3 hours straight. after peeing himself he called for the nurse, and the nurse rudely threw a gun at him and said change yourself. my father told the nurse that he couldnt moved his entire left side. the nurse lied in the charts and said that he was being checked on every 15 minutes and was awake and oriented. that nurse diagnosed him with an overdose not a stroke.
my father now has permanent paralysis on his left hand side. he will never walk again. All because a nurse decided he was an addict and obviously an overdose because he was prescribed morphine for numerous back surgeries. because the records were either altered or a complete fabrication, there is nothing my father can do legally. the records from the ICU to indicate the incontinence and also the point that something serious happened but with today's malpractice laws, a patient's chart must show proof of negligence not just suspicion that it should be investigated.

Sorry Sandi, an Xray, CT scan or MRI are not always going to show the extent of some injuries. That is a medical fact.

It sounds like you may have torn some ligaments.... but there are 3 things you need to assess in this situation to ensure it isn't more serious : numbness in toes, fever or any type of red lines that travel away from the injury. Sometimes you can get an infection in the bone, a blood clot or swelling that disrupts the circulation. Narcotics are not nearly as helpful as : elevating the ankle, ice compress, ibuprofen and rest. You can take ibuprofen every 6 hours and Tylenol every 6 hours not exceeding daily maximum dose as listed on the label. You can take the ibuprofen and then Tylenol 3 hours after and keep alternating every three hous to maximize the benefits of the anti-inflammatory properties and pain releif. Ice for 15 minutes max. As over icing can cause tissues to become damaged. Ice on for 15 off for 30 and on for 15 etc. Hope you feel better

I sprained my ankle several years ago. They took xrays to be sure I didn't have any fractures. It took a long time to heal. A few years later I had some xrays to check for heel spurs and the Dr asked when I had broken my ankle. He explained that sometimes a fracture won't turn up for a week or so. I would ask for more xrays.

Do not accept the story that because nurse falsified your father's chart that he cannot sue. He can. Start calling lawyers starting with the most respected firm in your area that handles malpractice cases, then keep working your way down until you find someone hungry enough to go after the hospital and nurse. She should be fired for this behavior and your father could win a huge settlement. Lawyers take these cases on spec, meaning you don't pay anything until the other side settles (then usually 1/3 goes to attorney fees). If you lose you pay nothing so attorney won't take case unless she or he knows that they can obtain a settlement. You also need to file medical malpractice complaint with state board. Attn. can guide you there too. Normally, I am not a fan of litigation but your father's case is so serious and other patients will also be endangered if nurse's behavior is not severely disciplined. Do it for your dad and for all future patients.

I know this is an old post, but since it was on today's email blog here's my 2 cents.
For inflammatory pain like a sprain and you don't have any gastrointestinal issues. Take 600mg to 800mg of ibuprofen (therapeutic doses) every 8hrs for several days. It's easier to stomach liquid gels and they work faster. This is what any doctor would recommend. Narcotics won't remove any inflammation and actually may cause you to make it worse because you're not sensing the pain as much. Pain is nessecary to limit motion so you don't cause more trauma to the injury.
I'm on alot of narcotic medication because of an epidural abcess 28 years ago, but I would take the above amount of ibuprofen for several days to speed up the removal of inflammation to speed up healing. After all that's the end result you're after.

I quit going to the Dr's over 3 years because I got tired but more humiliated because I was treated like a junkie. I went there 4 help. Every time I left the office, I was always crying, crying out of frustration. I was told the crying was a side effect from pain killers. 7.5 pink hydro's. I guess the crying had nothing 2 do with losing my job because the pain was 2 much. And the fact I lost my house I lived in for 15 years. U can't pay bills if u r not working. Now's I'm 2 scared 2 c a Dr. So been self medicating, and eating motrin like candy.
