I was wondering what the difference is between hydro and oxo codone? Is it the way the pill is made or extracted from the plant, Hydro is by water and Oxy is by oxygen??? I seem to think the oxycodone is stronger and almost all doctors and health care say it is more addicting than hydrocodone, why is this??? I have taken both for cruched disc in my neck and back, is there anything closely related without so much tylenol, I am severely allergic to Ibuprophen (all anit-Inflamitories) and hate the side affects of the tylenol in with either of these..Any help...???? Thanks

It seems as though Hydrocodone is party synthic, whereas Oxycodone is fully synthetic.

As Joel said, Hydrocodone is an ingredient in Vicodin whereas Oxycodone is an ingredient in Percocet.

I found the following info over at Wikipedia (gotta love them)

"Hydrocodone or dihydrocodeinone is a semi-synthetic opioid derived from two of the naturally occurring opiates, codeine and thebaine. Hydrocodone is an orally active narcotic analgesic and antitussive.

Marketed as Vicodin, Anexsia, Dicodid, Hycodan (or generically Hydromet), Hycomine, Lorcet, Lortab, Norco, Novahistex, Hydroco, Tussionex, Vicoprofen, Xodol. Bekadid, Calmodid, Codinovo, Duodin, Kolikodol, Orthoxycol, Mercodinone, Synkonin, Norgan, Hydrokon, Hydrocodone is commonly available in tablet, capsule and syrup form. Hydrocodone was first synthesized in Germany in 1920[1] and approved by the FDA for use in the US, in Hycodan, on 23 March 1943"

"Oxycodone is an opioid analgesic medication synthesized from thebaine. It was developed in 1916 in Germany and introduced to the pharmaceutical market as Eukodal ( also spelled Eucodal ) and Dinarkon. Its chemical name is derived from codeine - the chemical structures are very similar, differing only in that the hydroxyl group of codeine has been oxidized to a carbonyl group (as in ketones), hence the '-one' suffix, the 7,8-dihydro-feature (codeine has a double-bond between those two carbons), and the hydroxyl group at carbon 14 (codeine has just a hydrogen in its place), hence 'oxy'codone."

"Thebaine (paramorphine) is an opiate alkaloid. A minor constituent of opium, thebaine is chemically similar to both morphine and codeine, but has stimulatory rather than depressant effects, causing strychnine-like convulsions at higher doses[3]. Thebaine is not used therapeutically, but can be converted industrially into a variety of compounds including oxycodone, oxymorphone, nalbuphine, naloxone, naltrexone, buprenorphine and etorphine. "

Hope this helps!
