How Do I Convince My Son To Get Help With His Drug Problem?

Hi,

My son is 30 years old. He has a severe problem with pills. He has taken everything from his TV to his tennis shoes back to the store where he has purchased them. Brand new items. The pawn shop that he does go to they know him on a first-name basis. He is addicted to Roxicodone 30mg. As a mother, this breaks my heart. But I don't know what to do anymore. He is 30. I will talk to him. I will yell at him. I will preach to him, nothing is getting through. Any suggestions would help me. Thank you. Have a great Saturday afternoon. I did forget to add this. He tries to take my pain medication that I need for my chronic pain. And when I don't give him anything he just gets so mad at me. One time I had given him something because he was starting to get really sick. I got him past that hump and then I was done. I cannot be his mother and his drug supplier. I love him too much. And I don't want to lose him. But I have stopped completely. I'm just a lost mother right now. HELP ME!!!

The issue I think you will run into is that it's nearly impossible to get someone into treatment that isn't "ready". There is a show on cable TV called "intervention" I recommend watching any of the episodes that sound like they may relate to your situation. There will be a plethora of information and techniques and advice you could learn from the show. There is a number to call at the end of the show, if it were me I would seriously consider calling them and seeing if they could help. I wish you and your family the best of luck and will keep you in my prayers. Addiction is a beast and extremely hard to beat!

Hi Jason.

He is now on the road to recovery. He just woke up one day and said enough. He did turn to Suboxone and is doing wonderful. I'm so excited to be with him on his journey. So proud. Thank you for your advice. I'm just letting you know he is doing just wonderful.

As a recovering addict I have to say there was nothing my loving family could say or do to get me to accept treatment until I was ready. If you wonder why the addict in your life responds 'i don't know" to questions like "why don't u stop (insert drug of choice)?" Its more than likely because he/she really doesn't know. There was nothing anyone could say or do to get thru but i was listening and the best thing my family did is not be co-dependant & just let me know they would support my recovery when i was ready but they were absolutely NOT going to support my drug habit.
My suggestion for any family members is to attend al-anon or 'coda' which are free support programs with people going thru the same situation. Ask your family doctor about any health care facility offered programs that help with codependency or look it up online. There is support & suggestions out there if you look.
You could print some narcotics anonymous literature from their website such as "who is an addict?" or "what is NA?" and give it to the addict in your life so that they know where to go to get help when they are ready.
