How Dangerous Is Amiodarone

Updated

I am 64 yr old female. 200mg a day. How dangerous is this drug. My Dr. did not want to give it to me, but nothing else worked. Am looking to have an ablation soon.

Hi sue,

I did some research on this medication, and the information I have found is not so promising. There have been deaths linked to this medication and from what I can gather, those deaths have a lot to do with how toxic the medication is. A couple of the black box warnings associated with Amiodarone state that arrhythmias can be worsened and that it may cause significant heart block.

If your doctor is afraid to give this to you, I would honestly listen to him and not take any chances. There is no way to know for sure if it will cause you any problems, but is it really worth the risk? Is there ANYTHING else that you can try? If it were me, I would hunt down every alternative before opting to take the Amiodarone.

I hope this information and insight is helpful, good luck!

My doctor prescribed Amiodarone for me and I took it for 13 days. I was taking three tabs a day and I was so sick. I had diarrhea for nine of those days. I lost my appetite. I was sick to my stomach. My feet were swollen. I literally thought of suicide. I stopped it on my own and called my doctor and said I could not take it. I lost 9 pounds in those 13 days because I could not eat. My doctor said some people could take it and some people could not. I could not. I am now on DIGIXON and it seems to be working OK.

I've been taking AMI (amiodarone) for 6 months and am worried about side effects. I am having some GI distress, bloating and occasional constipation. I also take allopurinol + losartan and would like to switch; is there a good alternative?
