Hi shawn,

Some advice I can give you is to not specifically ask for any 'specific medication' when you see a doctor. Just make sure to transfer or take a copy of all your medical records with you if your doctor doesn't already have them.

Then, the best approach in my opinion, is to discuss up front and honestly what has or hasn't worked for you in the past. Most doctors will then take it under consideration and hear you out if you approach them in this manner, with what you believe to be most helpful to your condition.

I think a lot of patients don't get the medication they need because they are approaching the doctor in such a needy way that they are being viewed as addicts or junkies and not patients. So as awkward as that may seem, it is something to consider and be made aware of.

I hope this helps!

Demerol is no longer used by most hospitals but in most rare of circumstances, basically someone in an emergant situation with an allergy to morphine might possibly get an injection of Demerol before they go to surgery or for a procedure. Demerol has fallen out of favor due to neurotoxic effects, I found this out while in the hospital, it was a different hospital than I usually went to, it was an emergency and my doctor had ordered Demerol round the clock for pain and after 4 injections the nurses and pharmacy were refusing further dosing which was shocking. They explained why and I had never heard of such a thing, it was their hospital policy and they contacted the doctor and got him to change the orders to morphine. Not only did the morphine help me so much more but it is thought that the Demerol only made my pain worse as they said and looking back (this was a few years ago) after I was out of the crisis, I agreed. I never knew, until this happened, how much pain the demerol was adding to an already painful condition. Not to mention how many side effects it reduced. I always needed more Demerol b/c it doesn't last 4 hours (unless you get 1-2 shots your entire life). The morphine worked, was smoother, didn't change the way my foods tasted (metallic), didn't make my skin crawl, didn't give me headaches, didn't make my legs give out. The list of negative affects Demerol had on me was so long that my only complaint of changing to morphine was what the heck took them so long to do it!

Wow! Thank you so much for explaining that! I've been complaining about how the drs all treat me like I'm an addict, treat me badly, right off the bat, and then won't even treat my pain. I feel kind of dumb for not being patient enough to think that through! Thank you!

I have used 150 mg of Demerol for pain in ER. It works well. There is no high or other side effects. It just gets me out of pain so I can get on with my life. I used to get an inj. once or twice a year. One doctor told me this would knock out a 300 lb man for three days! But I told him,I am a woman and we react to medication differently than men. We are physically, genetically and hormonally different than males. But now they want me on morphine everyday!! Not good! I feel like they are trying to kill me. I hate taking Meds in the first place. And only when the pain is debilitating. The Demerol works great and only need it a couple times a year. The morphine has kept me in a lot of pain and does not work. Would really like to find a doctor that understands morphine does not work for everyone. And find one that would prescribe a 180 count bottle of 100 mg of Demerol. I never have to stay in bed. If it works, why all the BS doctors give. I have delt with this pain for decades. Had every type of pain treatment, nerve blocks, and Meds. Demerol is the only one that works. But I can't get anyone to help. My doctor said hospitals no longer carry Demerol. That can't be true!

If the "casual, non requesting" approach worked for you, I'm very happy for you. I noticed you haven't said whether the approach described worked for you or not. Did it? I've tried EVERY possible approach with so many doctors that claim to specialize in pain, or pain management. I've found that nearly every doctor, regardless of the doctors nationality (since it seems far too many are schooled in India, Pakistan, Libyia, or any outside the USA medical school which says much about this country as does the ever disappearing natural born US citizen working in various fields that have very high average income levels). I have over TEN YEARS of both medical records which were all from the same Doctor as well as my prescription filling history I found out I could obtain for free from the Walgreens Archive department just by asking. They keep two years at your pharmacy, then all others are sent and kept for ten years. This was great I thought. I was well equipped to show any doctor my history, all drugs tried that failed, and as even just the Walgreens records show...once a drug was found that worked well for me, only that drug showed up over and over. Now with this concrete and irrefutable proof of my real need and my description of how it benefitted my health, quality of life, and mental state having something to temporarily reduce the constant pain I'm in. Any logical and reasonable person or Doctor should see clearly that I'm NOT an addict, nor a drug dealer. My meds are for ME as I'm the one and only one who needs them to deal with daily life.

I'll bet any reading are nodding their head thinking I've solved the problem of getting the proper medication I need to help me. Well boys and girls... You'd all be quite wrong!!!! What I DID find out is that every doctor in the New Port Richey area of FL where I moved to in November of 2013 SIMPLY DOES NOT CARE WHAT YOU HAVE AS PROOF, DOES NOT CARE THAT BY NOT PRESCRIBING THIS DRUG THEY HAVE CAUSED ME TO SUFFER MORE THAN I NEED TO JUST BECAUSE OF WHERE I LIVE!!! Yep! That's the true answer. Apparently some years ago there were doctors giving out prescriptions improperly and big chain pharmacies were filling these prescriptions even though they KNEW they were NOT following the prescription dispensing guidelines. NOW EXACTLY WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ME OR MY POOR HEALTH AND WHAT IVE GONE THROUGH TO FIND A DRUG THAT WORKS FOR ME IN GIVING A FEW HOURS OF REDUCED PAIN?!?! So since that move two years ago, I've had NO pain medication except Hydrocodone which does NOTHING for me! I even gave the doctor back the prescription one wrote out since I didn't want having that drug filled on my record since I knew it would do nothing to help me pain. Codiene does nothing for my pain and Hydrocodone, aka Norco, aka 10% Codiene with a 325mg Tylenol mixed together.so that method of not mentioning what you need or want to a doctor is irrelevant here in The poor areas of FL, and all my medical proof wasn't even looked at by ANY of the doctors I've paid to have a first appointment with. I'm so desperate with all the pain I've been in, my BP is sky high 162/110 on average... can you say stroke or heart attack?... I hardly sleep because it's impossible to sleep when in pain. I take more than the recommended amounts of OTC sleep drugs and they do very little and I know I'm probably causing other health problems by being forced to take all these sleeping drugs every night with little positive result. I'm thinking of going to Mexico and see if some doctor down there will prescribe me the drugs I need, but what if I get substandard drugs because ANYTHING GOES IN MEXICO. I don drink, never have. I don't smoke, never have. So I can't get drunk and pass out, and even though I know people who do...I can't take marijuana to see if it might help. The moral of this story is that doctors suck, the government that made these drug "level" laws have violated the Constitution by creating such drug laws. Add to that the spineless uncaring a**hole doctors who barely speak English who are only interested in getting paid by over billing any HMO or what medical coverage we might have. My answer is very simple...my life has been taken away from more than just this pain med situation, but my life has been taken from me back at age 22 in 1983 and I e fought for every success I e accomplished at corporate jobs as well as several business I started and had success with. It all means nothing as I've lost everything mainly because of bad health that was CAUSED BY INCOMPETENT DOCTORS. I'm left with only one choice to put an me to my pain. I've lost everything, I have no family, no one gives a shot about me, no one would even notice if I vanished. That's what passes for my life, and it's time to take the next step into my hands since it's impossible to get proper help when you're broke and living in a low income area. Luckily bullets are cheap and work 100% of the time to cure constant pain. Thanks medical profession. I'm tired of fighting all the time, tired of suffering every minute, tired of not being able to even go out and watch a movie in a theater. If anyone can relate to my exact description of my life, I'd certainly be interested in reading your story and how you feel.

I can totally relate to your situation, believe me you are not alone. You can blame all of this on the government and the DEA. When one of their children or relatives dies from an overdose or bad reaction they Crack down on the laws. I've been in been in pain management due to injuries for the last 20 years. Everybody doesn't react the same to certain drugs. If I could get demerol every day I wouldn't be in pain. I've been on the same regiment of pain meds for the last 3 years . Oxycontin, Oxycontin and hydrocoden and they can't get it through their heads that you build up a resistance or maybe they are afraid of the DEA. I wish they could feel what you and I and millions of others feel every day.

I agree with you. As a chronic female migraine suffer I know that demerol works for me better then any other drug and I don't feel high off of it, but I catch the migraine before it hits and I can carry on with my day. the signs of it coming on are visual and nausea. If I don't take Demerol, i'm in bed for days. I hate that people and medical doctors have no idea what a migraine is. I only wish they could experience them enough times to really get how debilitating they are. Demerol and Pheneghan mix in the red capsule was the best for me. Also 100mg of Demerol is good for someone like me and you. But maybe for other people it is not. But it is no reason to punish people in agonizing pain because they think they are being all noble and anti-drug. I don't drink alcohol or smoke or even have caffeine in my diet. But I've actually had a doctor last week tell me he would not refill my Demerol, but I should take up drinking alcohol. Perhaps he'd like me to drink and drive. Another thing that gets me is I've know of Doctors and Pharmacists who still abuse drugs heavily and get away with it. They are the worst at not dispensing the proper medications one needs for their pain. Instead they push things like Ibuprofen. Which actually put a hole in my G.I. tract and I almost bled to death. So I'd rather have what works. Demerol. Morphine makes my stomach sick as does all Dilaudid, lortabs etc. and who wants to feel worse when you already have a migraine with vomiting and IBS etc. Not me. But I know of Pharmacists that take your prescription for themselves. I personally know this as a fact. No one from the DEA ever does a thing about that but they force patients not to be able to get the proper medications they need. I'm not a kid and at my age I don't need a doctor, pharmacist or the govt telling me what works for my body.

I went to the same pain doc for 10 years. I followed the contract and never gave them a problem. I am bipolar, and about a year ago I was feeling suicidal so I voluntarily checked myself into the hospital. When my pain doc found out he refused to treat me anymore. He said he was concerned that I might use my pain pills to kill myself. He dropped me immediately and I had to go off of some heavy duty narcotics, that I'd been on for 10 years, cold turkey. Since then I've been to two other pain docs, but neither of them prescribe meds. They just want to give me injections, which only work for a week or two, and are expensive. I thought I'd found a new pain clinic but when I called the other day to make an appt, they asked me why I didn't remain with the last doctor, and when I told them that I felt I needed to be treated with a combination of injections and meds they were like, well we probably won't give you any meds. What the hell? You can't be honest with these people. If you know what has worked for you in the past, and all you want is to be treated with some respect and dignity, you are labeled a drug seeker. I'm sorry that we have a drug problem in this country. I'm sorry that a bunch of doctors wrote prescriptions left and right for people who were abusing drugs, or selling them on the street. Most of all I'm sorry that because some people abused the system, I now cannot receive the medicine I need to control my chronic pain. I cannot work, I cannot do things I used to enjoy, and I know there are a lot of people just like me out there, suffering because doctors are afraid to prescribe a medicine that they know will help, or they refuse to write a prescription because they look at anyone who needs narcotics as a junkie. I feel as though I was discriminated against because I have a mental illness. This situation is intolerable, but if I were going to kill myself I would have done it while I was going through the hell of withdrawal when my doctor cut me off.

I have totally understand what you're saying. I have a lot of heath issues and I live in Arizona and the doctors and pain management clinics do absolutely nothing. They do treat me like I'm a druggie. I am 45 years old and I have never been drunk, I have never smoked. I've never been on any illegal drugs. I have been sick pretty much all my life, I was five years old when I had my first surgery, in the last 2 years I have battling C-Diff, Anemia, migraine headaches, and chronic urinary tract infections. The only thing the doctors put me on is Percocet 10/325. I share your frustration. I hope things get better for you!

I have have used Demerol for sever pain. It works best for me. It keeps the pain from coming back. Now I am on morphine and in pain every day! The doctors just generalize every patient as the same. I too k a 150 mg shot. It took my pain away and was able to work, drive and do what I needed to do without the "high" or side effects. I would rather get a shot once every six months than take 120 mg every day, Morphine is a joke!! It does not work well, that why the doctors prescribe it. It keeps you coming back for help, thus money for each visit.

I had a chronic progressive cancer and was rx 175mg meperidine I'M Q 3H orb. I'd pick up literally bottles and vials by the bag full. That was 5 years ago. Demerol isn't even used in the hospital on work in except for migraines and short term pregnancy pain

I agree with everything they saying about the Demerol I was in a car wreck back in 1980 and I'll tell you what I am so tired of feeling the way I feel and knowing that that's the only medications ever stop my pain I've never in my life seen all you get is Norco or you know hydrocodone are Oxycodone it does not stop the pain it's the most miserable nights I've ever had in my life I went back to work after that car wreck but now that I'm in pain management they're not listening they just don't care it just pisses me off and I don't care who don't like it I'm just tired of all the pain how come they won't listen to as I tell you how come they won't listen to it it's because that we are in a racket this day in time they get a kick back out the pharmaceutical company and they don't care how you feel that's exactly what is going on long as they get their kick back on all this medication that's all they care

I believe this is true. Demerol injections has been the only injection to relief my migraine headaches faster. I have migraine since childhood and throughout the years I've tried so many new medications so called for migraine and nothing has worked better than Demerol. Note: I am not an addict but know pain.

Well if you're taking several Dilaudid 8s at a time I would not recommend telling this to your doctor because he will most likely try finding you a rehabilitation center loll....jk. I would just be honest and tell him you have taken Demerol before and you remember it working better than what you are taking right now, ask him if he can change your medication because your immune system has built up an immunity to what your taking and you have started taking a bit more to calm the pain and you would like to switch to the Demerol hoping you won't need as much. Personally, I would be happy with the dilaudid 8s. I have been taking hydromorphone 18 mg for a few years now and it really does not help anymore and my doc refuses to give me anything else. That's my advice to you.

Re: DeeAnne (# 8) Expand Referenced Message

I have been suffering from horrible migraines I see a neurologist and he prescribes 6 Demerol shots a month I give myself at home. Unfortunately, he is retiring in a few months and my primary care doc doesn't believe in narcotics. I've been to the ER quite a few times before seeing the neurologist and they gave me two Tylenol. I cried and walked out. I'm making myself sick because I know what's coming after he retires. I don't know what I'm going to do.

Re: ConstantPain (# 5) Expand Referenced Message

I know very well how you feel, after experiencing my accident on the trampoline when I broke my tibia bone in my leg. It was a bad break, bad enough to make the doctor think whether or not it was worth fixing, amputation crossed his mind. I kept my leg thank "God". I was off my feet for almost 1 year. My back and my hips were never the same after I had constant pain. At this time I was on oxycontin 40 mg and dilaudid 8mg oxy morning and evening and dilo between doses. This was actually quite wonderful worked wonders for my pain. I remember at the hospital they were giving me some shots of painkiller that Im not even sure what it was but after a few shots a couple days later my pain was coming back quite a bit faster and only taking off the edge. The next morn doc sent pills to swallow. I remember them telling me it was oxycontin 40mg. I will never forget after about 20 minutes laying my head back with the sudden relief of the pain subsiding fast, I had the best sleep Id had in a long time. After a few hours they asked how my pain was scale of 1 to 10. I told them 5 maybe more as it was progressing quickly.

I was given 8 mg of dilo with 4 mg of dilo (12 altogether). This took the edge off the pain till the 2nd dose of oxy that night. This was the best dosage I was ever given. It worked just perfectly. It is now approx 11 1/2 years ago, a lot has happened since then. I've had a lot of rough times and my script was brought down to 20 mg and completely cut off the dilo. As you can expect the pain was a bit less but never gone. In fact the last couple of years the pain is agonizing at times as the oxy had been supposedly taken out of the pharmacies. I was cut off completely for a year but the pain got so bad i was considering the bullet myself. I wound up with a canadian (white doctor) who i guess was just finding god in his life and asked if i believed... i said yes and i ended up staying with some family of practicers of god / jesus and a couple days went by of praying and trying to cast the pain out in the name of jesus and well i guess i was just a bit weirded out when she was howling all loud and touching me all over, even told me if i started to feel funny down there that it's normal cause all my sins were coming out. Well ok enough is enough. Im outta there lol...so once again i got no help there and later went to see him to ask for something for my pain as it was getting to be just too much. He gave me some 5mg pill called statex. Wtf was that? He gave me a 20 pill to try for 10 days. I had finished the prescription in two days as it was fake im sure & tasted like candy.

Anyways, i make another rendezvous to explain it doesn't work. The night before i had a friend come over, i was not feeling up to company as the pain was sill progressing. Im not a person who likes to do drugs. Ive tried a few times here and there but it was never my thing & I never made a habit of it. Back to my story - A friend came over who was an addict of cocaine and tried convincing me of its affect on pain. I was doubtful and of course gave it a try. I dont remember it doing anything for my pain but i do remember feeling uncomfortable and not much sleep. Finished with that I knew. Come the rendezvous the next day with my doctor I continued to ask for something that would work, out of the blue he asked me if I used drugs. He doubted me I swore it and he demanded a drug panel. It totally didn't cross my mind about the cocaine the night that had passed, wtf was i thinking? Maybe i figured it would be gone out of my blood seeing the effects were gone long ago. Well I failed by a long shot and believed to now be a lying drug addict looking for some high. I felt like a real f***ing looser. I tried to explain but the more explaining i did the more foolish i looked too?

One day i met a lady who was in alot of pain and was there to talk to her doc about her pain too asking to have her meds a bit stronger. I asked if what she was taking worked for her and she told me yes but it needed to be stronger. I don't know why but she reached into her pocket and emptied 10 or 15 orange capsules into my hand and immediately I swallowed one and took off home 30 minutes later the pain started to go away. About 5 years ago i finally changed my doctor and I told him I had been trying to find a permanent doctor who would help me to find a way to help my pain and lets be honest i mixed a bit of truth with a bit of white lies. The capsules the girl gave me that day were hydromorph contin 12 mg and it took the edge off my pain so i told the doctor that i had been taking 18 mg of this pill and my last doc who turned very religious took them from me cold turkey after a few years and told me to pray to god to take my pain away. So i needed his help because the pain was too much to have to deal with the pain every day. Its ruining my life.....And.....it worked! Thank god (lol) it was all the truth except the kind of meds i was taking. The pray thing was true, the being cut off everything was true, except i changed the meds... do i feel guilty? Not At All...

It could still be a few mg plus but for now I wont complain. Now I'm scared cause it's been a few years. Starting to shake and forget things and (age) is hitting. When I tell my doctor that the pain and hurt is cutting into my life, he tells me it's all in my head. So I see we're gonna run into trouble soon. I asked him to make my script higher one last time or at least something in between so it will be easier for me to live and he bluntly said if i asked again he would cut my prescription completely. So well yep im now on the edge with pain that's still there and anxiety out the roof with clonas 0.5 and refusal of any higher and this is where i am in my life right now. I been on the road to nowhere the whole time and feels like i still am amongst all the other losses and things ive had to deal with. I hope the best for you in llfe my friend, lets hope something turns around on our favour one day. p.s. there were two other accidents i didnt mention here. I guess my story was long enough to get my point across.

I agree with you. I rarely take or need pain medications. But when I do, demerol is the only thing that works for me. All others make me sick, "out of it", and don't work. I know there are side effects, but you can't tell me that there aren't side effects to pretty much everything, Including pain meds.

Every time I've had to go to the emergency room for kidney stones they have given me everything but Demerol and their medicine never works on me. But, as soon as they give me the Demerol the pain immediately stops and I'm able to lay down on the hospital bed.

I can totally relate. I have had severe migraines for 28 years and have tried about every preventative and new migraine drug on the market. Zomig will help I catch it soon enough but add on MS with neck spasms and Fibromyalgia, expose me to heat or not enough sleep and I am in bed for days. BUT when we lived in Bham, Al I had an awesome neurologist who would give me an inj. of Demerol and Phenergan and it would be gone. When I got to where I could not drive, he wrote me the pill form or Meperidine to have at home. Then we moved to Illinois. Whole different painful existence. I have been to the ER once because I am not working and hubby's in pain management and still working 7 days a week to keep us afloat. They would not give me Demerol, though I had worked in medical for 22 years, knew what did not work and what would relieve my pain. It is not like I had been there repeatedly seeking Demerol. But I told them what had been tried when the headache is days long. It had been 7 years since I had gotten Demerol and they still DID NOT LISTEN TO THE PERSON EXPERIENCED IN TREATING HER MIGRAINES. They gave me an ice with Magnesium and something else and I left the ER 6 hrs. later with the same damn migraine.

Now I am having daily migraines and it has affected me mentally. So for depression, they rx'd Wellbutrin. Well hello Serotonin Syndrome when I had to take 2 Zomig in one day! But they can't have me abusing Demerol every 7 years! If I had the Rx to take at home, I know for a fact that my migraines would be greatly reduced. And like I mentioned above, my b/p gets dangerously high even on b/p meds because of the pain. I understand they deal with addicts seeking narcotics but they have the ability to view all of my medical records via a local network I gladly participate in. But I sit at home & suffer because why should I go to the ER to rack up a bill and not be helped, especially when I have done their job for them, trying this and that over 28 years until I found what works. And they ignore it. I am going to see my MS Neurology for my headaches and I will be broaching it with him. He already ok'd medical marijuana but we have good insurance that would cover a Demerol Rx and it would work for the Love of God, no addict here, just a person with Chronic Migraines, MS, Fibromyalgia and Sjogren's Syndrome, to list a few...oh and alot of treatable pain. It is like they are masochistic or something. Grow a heart and use your doctor brain and listen to your patients!!!!

Demerol 50 MG (name brand) are no longer available as of earlier this year 2017. I now have to get Demerol (name brand) tablets 100 MG and cut in half. I have a number of chronic painful conditions, fibromyalgia, cervical thoracic dystonia, scoliosis, degenerative disc disorder, bulging disc, pinched nerves in back/neck, everyday headaches, + more, however, I've only requested Demerol before having one of more than a dozen surgical procedures. I'm allergic to Codeine, Percocet, Morphine, Hydrocodone, Lortab, and MEPERIDINE which is the generic for demerol, so my only option is Demerol name brand. I tried MEPERIDINE and I had such a bad reaction to it I did not take it but a few days after a surgical procedure, 90 days after my surgery I took my medication to my doctors visit, showed them I'd not been able to take it and there was no need to be concerned that I was addicted or may become, I've been using Demerol for more than 10 years now, I have 4 pills locked away in my safe from a 2012 script, 2 pills from a 2014 script, I only take pain medication when I absolutely need it, I do take valium, flexeril, Ambien CR 12.5, Zolpidem, and use pain creams & rubs. Please be careful with narcotics, it's so very sad to see so many people addicted to prescription medications, doctors are right to be cautious and concerned.
