Help - New Medication (sintrom), Diabetes And High Blood Pressure

Updated

Hi. My husband has just got home from a 7 day stay in the hospital, where he was diagnosed as having a large blood clot in his shoulder and a smaller one behind his knee. He is an insulin dependant diabetic, VERY overweight (at the moment at least. That one, we are going to work on asap). Tests yesterday revealed the clots have responded very well. He has been placed on an initial dosage of 4mg of sintrom daily, and has been given sintrom in the hospital. The doctors were obviously aware of the insulin (and metformin) medications, also that he has meds for high blood pressure. Reading the advisory with the sintrom, I couldn't find any counter indications to his medication regime. Having checked the internet advice I am now very concerned that he's going to have adverse reactions! For reasons I will not bore you with, we were unable to get a GP appointment for weeks and I don't doubt he will immediately order a lab test on the sintrom. In the meantime, any advice is welcome! Do we just plow ahead with the sintrom and his other medication? We generally eat a lot of vegetables and salad stuff. Some sites say lay off the cauliflower and tomatoes, as well as cabbage. And advice? What about carrots? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated, many thanks.

Talk to a pharmacist-it’s their job to know all the side effects and interactions with other medications and health problems. They know where to look to find the answers. They should have more in-depth resources than just the package inserts. If they need to do research, let them know that you would rather wait a day while they look it up ( if needed). Sometimes smaller, independent pharmacies will be more helpful than the short-staffed ones at big box stores. Also pharmacies in a hospital can also be a great resource. Keep looking and asking questions until you feel comfortable that you have the info. that you need. Post your results, I’d like to know what you find out. Good luck! ( I’ve been on anti-coagulation therapy for the past 15 years and will be on it for the rest of my life).

I think Sue is correct in saying checking w/ your Pharmacist is your best bet when it comes to contraindications and medications. But you are also your best Medical Advocate sometimes. As our experience was w/ the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fl. they gave my husband medicine that he had severe reactions to, even though it was clearly stated in his records for his Asthma. Medications are tricky when dealing w/ multiplies. Do your own research, just make sure when you are reading a site that they are not trying to sell you something, that makes them less creditable. Best of luck & hope you find a "Good Doctor".

When it comes to clots, the main concern is usually dark leafy greens, or anything rich in vitamin K, since it can cause thickening, according to NIH studies.

As to the Sintrom, what did you read that you are concerned about? Providing more details would make it much easier for someone to address your questions. The NIH lists its typical side effects as possibly including dizziness, headache, easy bruising, muscle aches, and increased risk of bleeding.

What are the names of the other medications that he takes he takes for high blood pressure? This is another case, where more details are needed to enable someone to provide you with more specific details.
