How have you been looking for a doctor?

The reason I'm asking is because the biggest mistake I see many people making in your situation is calling a new doctor and asking if they will prescribe a particular medication. If you do that, doctors and their staff will view it as drug seeking behavior and, in many cases, you won't even get in the door.

What you need to do is set up an appointment with a new pain management specialist, without asking for anything specific ahead of time and then make sure to give them a full copy of your records. If they can see what has and hasn't worked for you in the past, as documented by a fellow physician, there is a better chance that they will prescribe accordingly.

Learn more Percocet details here.

Does anyone have a specific pain management clinic they can recommend?

Thank you for your response. Since arriving here from NY 5 months ago I have been asking people if they could recommend a pain specialist. One person was even a doctor (a family friend) and all I heard from everyone was "down here they don't prescribe opioids". One doctor, a specialist, saw the pain I was in and he prescribed hydrocodone. Then he told me it was "a one time only prescription". During another flare I tried a different doctor, (sports medicine) he prescribed Cymbalta, and said "this is how I'm going to treat your pain issues"!! I just don't get it.

I have joined "Angie's List" in my quest to find a doctor who will take my pain issues seriously. Someone who will take the time to review my medical & pharmacy records. I don't want to be some doctors guinea pig and put a bunch of crap into my system, that I know from past experience, does not work.

I have serious sleep issues as well as CFS, FMS, MFS, Arthritis, Spinal Stenosis, herniated and bulging discs...As I said before, I have the documentation which states all of the above. I'm still trying to find a pain specialist down here. Will keep you posted how I make out. Thank you again for your response.

IT S awful right now in FL. Their pill mills and shortage of meds at all pharmacies seems like a nightmare. Try EClinicMd, they will email or call you back they're reliable and legitimate.... as long as you have your record. I m just warning you about FL and how abusers have made it hard for us. Good . Luck, plz do let me know if I helped.

I have my records, but I do not even know where to start to find a physician............................ I don't want my meds to change because they work as they are prescribed! Anyone know of a good physician in Pensacola, Florida - PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP!

Hi Pamela,

I am just very curious as to why you, and many others, come here to look for doctor referrals after moving from another state.

It would seem to me that if you have severe and chronic pain, you would research all of this before moving. And why wouldn't you get a referral from a doctor you had before moving? Who was providing you with medication prior to your move? Couldn't that doctor give you a referral to a new doctor as well as forward all of your medical records?

This is not to be rude at all, I am genuinely curious.

I know that if I were moving to a new state, the first thing I would do is to establish a new PCP, Pain Mgmt Specialist, and have all my records and prescription needs pre-determined before I moved.

And you are not alone -- there are dozens of people like you who are looking for a pain doctor, but now it has become critical and they are in agony.

I certainly wouldn't go to a medical chat board to find a doctor once it has become a crisis. At the very least, can't you call the local hospital(s) to get a referral?

I must be missing something here. Would love to understand!

Good luck to you!

Have you been able to find a doctor yet? I'm in the same position as you and really need to see a dr.
Thanks!

Have any you been able to find a doctor in the Pensacola area? I know these post are as old as 2 years ago but I just came across it. I'm in the same situations as you all were then :( I've tried ALL of the natural treatments which helped to a degree, and I don't want to be dependant on medication forever, but the insurance I have won't cover the surgery that I need right now so unfortunately, the bandaid of medicine, along with natural supplements and chiropractic care is what's going to work for now...I'm just having a problem finding a dr since all of the new pain laws have taken place.
Thanks!

Please do not start on Cymbalta. There are many message boards out there explaining the horrible side effects of withdrawal. Several legal suits are on going and the duration of withdrawals can be months long. This is not a pain medication. It is an antidepressant/ antipsychotic prescribed OFF LABEL for Fibromyalgia.

Definitely stay away from Cymbalta. I was put on it for fibromyalgia and I thought I was losing my mind. I'm so tired of being a guinea pig. My meds were working just fine until they changed the laws this year. Now I feel like s---. Before it was "let me know if the pain is worse and I will make adjustments." And was always told whatever you do, don't not take your pills. Makes you wonder how this can be fixed so people get the care and compassion we deserve. Is there a way I could get in contact with Megan via email?

I hope you found someone. Medical care is poor in this area and even in Florida. I highly recommend Orthomolecular medicine (usually a Naturopath) Some dr's say they're alternative/conventional but when you actually get in to see them & get established, they always prescribe something or want to sell you something they've ordered & are selling (which you can't get OTC) so....it's either very expensive (I'm on the Standard Process) and all of everything combined, including organic and gluten free diet all adds up. Dr.'s and Hospitals are becoming very insensitive to those in pain & in fact have become paranoid in thinking anyone who needs or requests pain medication is a drug addict. It's getting bad. Dont' give them your business, go online and rate them & perhaps they will get the picture. Good luck!

Thete is no help from the medical community in Florida. I am in pain management and the doctor does not care or listen deepite 15 years of prior records amd treatment from up north. My pcp even told me to go to Alabama or Georgia because of the horrible situation in Florida with people not getting the proper help with pain management. The DEA has scared doctors so badly that it has been very detrimental to legitimate patients.

Start with a new primary care maybe they can refer you or network with people u may know that have injuries. Me personally? I walked into a pharmacy mom n pop joint and said hey guys i wanna avoid the pain doctors that just write lots of meds n make people addicts as i need a good pain doctor? The nosy busybody pharmacist and 2 techs chimed in fighting to tell me OMG u need to avoid these 5 DOCTORS they write 2 n 300 pill scripts to people? I said oh wow yeah ill avoid them for sure. I called every doctor they mentioned got an appt with one and had no issue getting pain relief. In fact the doctor was very caring ordered an mri lined me up with epidural inj. but well worth it but u could imagine when i returned to the same pharmacy with a fat rx they glared at me as if i had leprosy but its ridiculous that one has to do these things as it doesn't matter what pain issues u have, many doctors that do care wont write because of i****s in their business removing their discretion and treating them like dope dealers. I used to play fair but i gave that up. My quality of life is worth more than the narrow mindedness of i****s.

I've worked in medical so I do have insight on the subject. A doctor cannot refer a patient to another doctor outside of the state they practice within due to state laws being different. I am currently eat up with malignant cancer that is metastasizing through out my body so I am having to move to Florida for medical care. Now I'm living in unbearable pain as I grip to life and having to deal with the possibility of not receiving proper pain management due to drug addicts

Dr. David Norfleet in Crestview FL just north of Ft Walton Beach.
Tip...DO NOT piss off the office girls or manager. THEY control your scripts, NOT the doctor or nurse practicioner and they know it! The Dr and NP don't realize what's going on and I don't think they care. BUT. If you get in good with the girls up front, paticularly the office manager, she'll give you scripts without having to get the Dr permission and even signs them. I know this. She did it right in front of me. Print from the computer, add signature and there you go, have a nice day. Dead serious here. DO NOT make her mad or you're gone as a patient. Seen it and heard about it while sitting in the waiting room too many times. They don't care that the entire waiting room can hear them because they know they are gods in the PM community. They hold our lives in their hands. They know it and LOVE it!
But, you can get what you want if you play it right. Don't fail a ua, have your records and make sure you cry...when you go in...DON'T take your meds that take the pain away before you go in. Make sure you go in with your full pain in effect. They need to SEE it. Otherwise, they just hear blah, blah, blah, I want pills, blah, blah, blah...
Moultons pharmacy in Crestview or the Prescription Place in Niceville carries their heavier scripts like Oxys, Dilaudid and Fentanyl. No trouble filling any of those ever!
Not one time. Always in stock.

Good question so will answer for my situation. My husband's job transfered us. I had a 6 dis neck fusion. My doctors could not give me referral to any doctors her because they don't know them and do not want to be blamed if something went wrong.
Trust me I ask all our doctors and got same response.

Dr. David Norfleet in Crestview. Hes a jerk to be frank but his NP is terrific! And, you only see him the first time. He likes to start on the lowest possible dose, in fact, he even went as far as to reduce my dosage on my first visit. However, after that, you only see the NP and she is very caring and professional and actually listens!!!! She changed my Rx and got me on the right med and dose for me. She even skipped over the next 3 medications you are "supposed" to try first before going to what I am on because she actually READ my lab reports and noticed...OH! You have a problem metabolizing these other medications! They will make you sick! She knew before I told her!!!! FINALLY! I medical professional who does their job! What a relief!!!!
So, if you can put up with the dr for one visit and ignore and kiss a$$ to the office staff (don't piss off the office manager or she'll get you booted out the door!), the NP is totally worth seeing!

Yes you definitely are missing something! When moving out of state the doctors that are in the state that you're moving from don't have those connections to the doctors that are in the next date that you're moving to but I figured you would know that it would be common sense like you're staying to the other people. Why don't you get in that position and then report back and see what happens. Don't dictate please tell other people and be rude and then say your not mean to be rude it's ridiculous. When you don't know you're talking about

Re: Kaylee (# 5) Expand Referenced Message

I can answer this question - I was labelled as a chronic pain patient from bad car wreck injuries plus a genetic disease that cant be corrected by any means, the pain is unending and must be tolerated OR a Dr can prescribe pain medicine which makes for a much better life to live. Unfortunately, the government DEA has declared war on these opioid drugs due to abusers and all drs are too scared to get involved -- all they care about is $$$$ money! If you are lucky enough to find a real caring person who understands all the bulls*** but helps you anyway, that person is worth praying for - I'm in need of one now. Let us who truly suffer every day from pain know who can help us if you've been blessed with this person. Thanks!

I'm in Palm Beach County, FL. The pain management dr's here are compassionate, i take oxycodone 10/325 4x daily, Flexeril as needed and was just put on Opana Er 10mg 2x daily so far I'm pain free which is weird been in pain since i was 14 for multiple things, in and out of hospitals all my life. Be NICE when in pain management offices trust me, they do listen.

I went through the process by looking up pain management in the area I moved to and wrote letters backed up by medical records i had sent to prospective doctors and was successful. Can't you read?

Was this helpful? 0

Thats because you NEVER ask that question on the phone. You make the feel like drug dealers when you do that and they are all instructed to give you that same reply when asked on the phone. You write a letter and have your medical records sent to the prospective physicians office first. That is basic common sense. Please!

You need to do your own research. Just look up "pain management" in Destin/Ft. Walton Beach/Niceville and make appts.

There are many in Destin and Ft. Walton Beach. Do your own legwork like I did thru Google the call or better yet write to each of them with copies of your records and you should have no problem. When I first saw the comments on this topic it scared me to death, but most of them are just bs.

Really? You can't be serious! I was in exact same position and researched pain mgt drs in the area i was moving to...even having face to face appts and was told by each of them that they DO NOT prescribe opiates, only injections! I too had over 3 years of records and was lied to over the phone.
