Dilaudid contains the active ingredient Hydromorphone, which is a potent narcotic analgesic.

Have you consulted your doctor?

Hair loss is not a known side effect of this medication, but there are several other people that reported experiencing it, while taking it and there is really no way to say how any given medication will affect any one individual.

However, if it is being caused by the medication, then in theory, it should improve, as you continue to lessen your use of it and discontinue the medication.

I was looking up Dilaudid and hair loss, because that is the only thing that has changed in my meds.
I broke my back, and have been on it for 21/2 weeks. Just stopped 2 days ago and sweitched to hydrocodone. My hair is coming out more than a shedding big dog. Was wondering how long this may last id dilaudid is really the causw ?

Janet, what other medications are you taking?

Have you talked to your doctor?

Something you may want to discuss with him is adding a Biotin supplement. It has been shown to help some people by stopping the hairloss and helping it regrow.

I got Nature's Made Biotin (it's on sale at Walgreen's all of the time, buy 1 get 1 free or half off). I say this b/c I tried other brands of Biotin b/c it was suggested to me by the surgeons office, anesthesia does have this affect as well and now I swear by it. It really works, it slowed the loss, it grew it fast and healthier and my nails are SO strong which was a nice effect I wasn't looking for. Did you have surgery after becoming injured? If so, I think that's more likely the culprit b/c I haven't noticed that being a side effect. Make sure you taper down from the Dilaudid to make sure your body can adapt to the change in meds, Dilaudid is so much stronger that Hydrocodone that you might experience withdrawals which you don't deserve. Feel better soon.

Man I have been losing hair IN CLUMPS from the root since Nov. of last year (2011)!! That is when I went from taking vicodin 5/500 to Norco 10/325... I always knew in the back of my head that it could be the medication- but several Dr.'s that I have consulted all seem to think that it is unrelated! I am a 38 yr old female with scoliosis, endo, and anemia issues. I have researched extensively the hair loss situation, and it ALWAYS goes right back to my Norco. My hair seriously falls out from the root in clumps!!

Taking Gabapentin 3200 mg/24hrs and Hydromorphone 18mg/24hrs. My hair is falling out like crazy! - this is shocking and scary - but I don't know which medication is the culprit. Leaning towards the narc. Any way to undo the damage? Is this permanent?

My wife has Alzheimers' disease and has been on dilaudid for about 8 months because the doctors believe she is exhibiting signs of having pain. She had a wonderful head of hair. Just this last week she has two areas where clumps of hair have disappeared and the remainder of her hair looks dry and lifeless. Hair loss is not mentioned as a side affect of dilaudid but I am seriously wondering if this is the cause.

I had knee replacement surgery in May and was on Dilaudid as needed. I eventually only took it when I had to go to PT about 3 times a week. I stopped altogether about 1-1/2 weeks ago because my hair has been falling out more and more and when I saw this blog, I realized that Dilaudid was the culprit. Since I stopped, the hair loss has decreased somewhat, but I have little hair at the crown and hairline. I started taking Biotin about a week ago, but a different brand. Hoping it helps because very soon I will need a wig! UGH

I have been on hydromorphone1 month following spinal fusion. I have experienced marked loss of hair at a frightening rate among several other bad side effects. I can not wait to get off this drug.

This is eerie to read so many people experiencing this. I was on Hydromorphone/Dilaudid as well for about 2 months and have been experiencing hair loss at a rapid rate. Along with this is also severe skin dryness and thinning nails. I am glad to know I am not going crazy here dealing with this.

Re: Kathy (# 18)

I have just started on hydrocodone 8mg moderate release and my hairdresser noticed my hair was thinning in two area either side of my face. Now, I’m not losing hair in clumps or great masses I haven’t even noticed anymore than normal stray hairs in clothes etc. it just has this thinned out areas? My hairdresser said it could also be stress related.

That's a lie. Preolia is WELL KNOWN for this side effect! Read all the letters from women who had to stop taking this drug and there was never any improvement in our bones!
