Grapefruit Juice And Opioids

So I just took my dose of liquid methadone and drank 3 cups of Grapefruit juice. A couple hrs later I pretty much blacked out on and off for a few hours. Has anyone else have this happen to them? Also I'm about to take my daily 60- 80mgs of oxymorphone ER. If I drink another couple cups of Grapefruit juice is that gonna happen to me again or does it only pertain to Methadone? Any and all info is appreciated thank you

Sorry, I may be naive because I've been on methadone 51 years but can someone explain to me why grapefruit juice does that? I'll be 71 and not looking to get messed up. On monthlies and take 120 ml a day as prescribed.

You're all mostly daft. Only white grapefruit juice nonconcentrated has the enzyme to change mainly benzo potentiation.

Exactly ?? right......Also let me just say........Even when I prescribe legitimate doses of pain medicine to people with legitimate pain Acute and Chronic pain.....The pharmacy is always calling me or texting me questions.....Like are you sure this patient is having severe enough pain to prescribe them Dilaudid or Oxycodone.......So it's beyond my comprehension for this guy to be getting extremely high doses of Methadone and Oxymorphone and no pharmacy or pharmacist has said no.......Absolutely not. Just saying ??

I would never prescribe my patients Methadone and Oxymorphone for pain....In my professional opinion it's way too high of a dose number 1 and number 2 I am pretty liberal with prescribing pain medicine....I would never prescribe these 2 drugs together simply because they both depress the respiratory system way too much when taken together or even separate. There are other long-acting and short-acting opiates that work better together than this combination......

I am really skeptical that you are actually taking 80mg of Oxymorphone and taking 110mg of Methadone....There's no doctor that would get away with prescribing you this amount of medication.

Grapefruit juice is a big no no for Methadone and other Opoids. I was on the high dose Methadone program in Sweden for years. During the 1st 3 months all of us had to go to the clinic and submit a urine specimen in front of the women workers (one faces you through a hole in the wall at the bowl level and another stands next to you). Everyday a new expert would give an hour long lecture. One guy came to tell us what food to avoid. Hamburger buns with seeds can leave a positive response for morphine as they send them to labs. Grapefruit juice apparently is different in it's make up to nearly all other fruits. It's very acidic and Opoids are strong alkalines. The grapefruit juice stops the Methadone working causing adverse effects. Partly abstinence. So drinking a litre of my favourite juice is history. And has been since 1984.

Your probably taking the 50mg diclofenac. The pharmacy I work at has been out of this dose. Ask your dr or ask your pharmacy to contact your dr to see if they can change it to either the diclofenac er 50mg or the er 75mg. Same med but they may just have you take less of it.

Has your pharmacy not explained to you that grapefruit juice interferes with many medications? Makes them ineffective! Why would you disregard this information?

This is easy. STOP DRINKING GRAPEFRUIT JUICE!! At all. None. Why would you drink something that MAY not mix well with your meds? Just stop drinking grapefruit juice. There are literally dozens of other choices besides grapefruit juice (or orange juice, etc.)

That's great that you found some relief, especially from a walk in clinic! Cool deal. I've had cluster headaches for too many years to count, but finally found some relief from a bp med.. Crazy how we find our help in odd places sometimes.

I take Sumatripitan for my migraine and I have tryed quite a few other meds none worked like this. I call it my life saver cause without them I'd be screwed missing work and enjoying life. Just a side note my new primary doc was surprised that this med worked for me..and the weird thing is a wslj in clinic I went to actually gave me this med and found out that way(thank god) I've been having migraines since I was 13 had a MRI done on my brain but no findings. I again had one done 6 months ago and again no findings so I have no idea why I suffer half a month with migraines. I couldn't imagine getting my meds taken away after finally finding the one that works. Good luck hope this helps.

Hey, give me some info on dosage that you were on with Diclofenac Potassium, ie. pill form,injections, etc. I've never heard of Ajovy, but if you want to share that info, I'll help you look at options. There's a small thread on here, not much info, but give it a try, I'll paste it up here.. Migraines suck, and losing the meds that worked for you for so long sucks even more.. Maybe we can find you some help.
