Glycomet For Children

Updated

My daughter has been prescribed Glycomet 500 for the past 8 months due to her high insulin levels, and she is suffering from obesity. I am eager to understand how Glycomet is beneficial and what the potential downsides are under long-term use of this medication?

Glycomet contains the active ingredient Metformin, this is an oral antidiabetic medication that is used to help lower and control blood sugar levels.

Its side effects may include: nausea, dizziness, stomach pain and flatulence.

There are always possible risks associated with the long-term use of any medication, however, what you have to take under consideration is the fact that, if she is diabetic, then letting that condition continue out of control is far more risky, than anything she faces from using the medication.

Have you discussed your concerns with her doctor?

Verwon,

Thank you for providing that understanding. I had a further query about a specific case: she is only 10 years old and weighs 53 kilograms. Her sugar levels are within normal limits, but her insulin level is slightly above average. From my basic understanding, obtained through reading on the subject, I gather that her body is developing insulin resistance. I'm curious about how Glycomet helps in this situation and how long she should continue taking Glycomet to ensure safety.

Additionally, I have consulted a pediatric endocrinologist. At this moment, I have been advised to control her fat intake in cooking and increase her activity levels.

My 23-year-old daughter stands at 5ft, 5 inches tall and weighs 86 kilograms. Most of her excess weight is located in her buttocks, thighs, and legs, while her upper body remains significantly slimmer. Previous attempts at weight and inch loss have resulted in noticeable changes in her upper body, while her lower body remains largely unchanged.

Though she experiences regular menstrual cycles, they only last two days with minimal bleeding. We have been informed that the medication, Glycomet-500 or Glycomet-1000 may potentially assist in reducing the size of her lower body.

Please advise if this medication would be beneficial, and would there be any side effects. Moreover, I would like to know what the recommended duration and dosage for such medication would be. Thank you.

Metformin has been given to people with these types of issues, because just as it does for a diabetic, it can improve their body's use of insulin.

As to exactly how it does so, I am afraid that I'm not a chemist, so I can't really give you a precise detailing of that. I can tell you tons of information on medications, but sometimes their mode of action can't even be explained by a chemist or by the people that discovered it.

As to reducing the fats in her diet, this is something I can explain. Fats tend to coat the cells in your body and this coating prevents them from absorbing the sugars that they need to burn for energy. This leaves those sugars to just run rampant in your blood, so the levels are elevated. So, a reduced fat diet helps improve the ability of your cells to work properly and get the sugar and nutrients they need.

As to how long she should continue it, that is something that her doctor should check into, by testing her insulin level on a regular basis. There is no defined time frame for any particular person, because it's going to vary depending on their own body.

Nawal, the side effects are listed in my first post and there is no way to say whether or not this medication will help her, the only way to find that out is for her to actually try it. She should follow her doctor's instructions for using it and the proper dosage to take.

If I missed anything, please let me know!
