Normally I take 40 mg of oxycontin ER. The generic is usually yellow in color. Recently, I was given one that is purple and the marking is G 163. Is this also 40Mg?

Yes, I can confirm that. It is 40mgs Oxycodone, generic for Oxycontin, just made by a different manufacturer.

The generic you received was yellow, however, there are no guidelines or laws for what they have to look like, so it is entirely up to the whit and whim of the manufacturer. Thus, pills from different companies will look different and have different markings.

I have just been given the round purple G 163 pills instead of the little round white pills I got last month, and the oval white ones the month before (the white ovals are the ones I have been given at the same pharmacy for the past two years). Apparently this is because of a lawsuit which has resulted in the fact that the generics are not allowed to be made anymore, so the pharmacies are running out of them, and are taking whichever manufacturer's brand they can get.

The upshot of all this is two-fold. The first thing I was afraid of was that the price would go up. It will indeed. The generics cost $10 a month copay, but the brand-name Oxycontin that will be left when the generics are gone cost more than $100 a month! But now I am becoming very willing to pay this even if I have scrimp and save pennies to do it because I have just realized that the latest generics are a much lower strength than the old ones! For the past two weeks I have been in increasing amounts of pain, despite excercises and yoga and a good diet. I have been unable to sleep through the night, and I have days when I am overcome by nausea. I have started taking a little larger dose than usual, and being very worried because I have exactly the amoutn of medication that gets me through one month, and I can't go over because then I will run out at the end of the month and have to be in horrible pain.I have just been assuming that my tolerance has suddenly gone way up, even though I have been stable on pretty much the same dose for two years. As I've been preoccupied with trying to figure out what I'm going to do regarding both the price increase and the tolerance issue, I decided to check online to see how much longer the generics would be available. What I found was shocking. Testimonial after testimonial saying that the generics vary drastically in their strength, and they are nowhere near as strong as the brand-name Oxycontin. WOW. So I'm not going nuts, and my tolerance isn't going up -- it's the pills! Why don't they tell you this?!?? Imagine what would happen if I switched over to the brand-name without knowing this? If they are truly that much stronger and i had gotten used to these purple ones that are so much weaker, I might seriously overdose on the brand-name ones. As it is, I will find a way to pay for them if they will return me to my previous state of relatively less pain. Right now, I am in pretty much constant agony unless I take almost a dose and a half. I am hoping I can take the remainder of this month's prescription in and, with my doctor's authorization, trade them in for the brand-name ones and pay the difference. Anyway, fwiw, this is what I've been going through. Hope the info is helpful to someone.
