Fioricet Does Not Work For My Migraines

Updated

I have had migraines since a wreck when I went through the window of my car and got a Traumatic Brain Injury. The last 5 years they have gotten worse. So bad that I rarely have a good day. I spent two years getting into a dr in Texas where I lived and was given limited amounts of Norco or Lortab. I had to move to Louisiana where in the last two years I have spent getting into see a Neurologist. After seeing him all he prescribes is Fioricet which is not helping. I had a migraine 5 days the week of Christmas. I spoke with him about this last week (when I was having a migraine in his office and crying in pain) and he would not help me. Death has to be easier than living like this. The thing is this....Anything you take overtime your body will become addicted to. I don't know what to do. Where to turn. Who will help me?

My head always hurts, drs have better drugs to help wtih migraines. Also you need to realize that you need to see a dr several times and take what they give you, then they may or may not give you a certain med. If you're telling a dr that you want a certain med and when he doesn't give it to you, you don't go back, that is a red flag for drug seekers. Do you have a copy of your medical records from your previous drs ?

Yes, I have been doing everything and taking everything he has given me but nothing has worked. And no, I do not go from Dr to Dr. I know that's not a good thing to do. It's taken me two and a half years of going to Drs thinking by now I would be helped. Yes, I have records of everything that has been done to me. He also will not put down ,my correct diagnosis which is chronic migraines. I looked into my record and he has me as acute migraine. He mentioned botox but my insurance will not pay for it unless I have a diagnosis of chronic migraines. When I mentioned this to him (regarding his incorrect diagnosis) he just stared at me. When I asked him why his office hadn't called me about getting/trying the botox he said "You have to have a diagnosis of chronic migraines" and I said, "I know". I have 3 to 4 of them a week. I slept (stayed in bed) from Saturday morning until Tuesday afternoon because I couldn't get up because of the effects of the headaches. I don't know what to do. I don't want to start all over but I'm not getting anywhere with him. Also, he prescribed something to me that made me feel like I was having a heart attack. When I told my regular Dr about it she asked if he knew what else I have been prescribed because he should never have given it to me with what she has me on. I told her yes he knows. When I told him what she had told me about the medicine he says, "Yes the side effects are tightening in the chest and in your throat" All together I have been on a different medication every month for the last 8 months with him. The latest try was Nalfon. When I said that I was in his office crying....He gave me some samples of Nalfon and I took them in the parking lot. They do not help either. Also he knows my insurance wouldn't pay for it but sent me in a prescription at over $100 a month. By the time I got to my pharmacy (they know me very well and have been my pharmacist for years) and I knew that it wasn't working I told her no, that I was not going to pay for something that did not work. So, I go back in early February or I need to find yet another Dr. Two and a half years with this Dr and nope I'm not Dr shopping. I'm afraid that's what they're going to think even though it's been 2 1/2 years. My sister (a nurse) told me to go get a copy of my medical files with them. Everything, not just what I can see. That's what I'm doing next. What I'll do with it I have no idea.

LivingDayToDay, you do need to get a copy of your medical records and read them. The only thing that I can think of is if you were to call his office and ask for an emergency appointment every time you have a migraine. Sometimes, this is what it takes to convince a dr. If the migraines are severe, you need immediate help when you have one. If it isn't severe, don't call for an emergency appointment because the dr can usually pick up on it when he sees you. Do you have visual disturbances and nausea with your migraines ? If you have nausea, does your dr give you medication for that or have you asked him for something for the nausea ? If not, it is doubtful that you're having chronic severe migraines.

Many years ago the focus was on controlling the severe symptoms of migraines because at that time there wasn't any medications to prevent or reduce them and their severity. Now they have medications that can prevent and reduce the severity of the symptoms and they focus on that. Nalfon is for the relief of mild to moderate pain in adults and also for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
