Fentanyl Patch Burns

I have been using Fentanyl Patch for over a year now. I am up to 75 mcgs a day. I have been using Tegaderm over the patches to keep them off. They work very well. I have been using those almost as long as I have been on the patch. About 1 1/2-2 months ago, I started experiencing burns on my skin where the patch is. My mom calls them "chemical burns." It's hard to have the patches on as they itch so much and when I take them off, my skin is very red and then gets very scaly and starts to peel off (while still being very itchy.) I've not had a problem at all before this, and I have not brought it up to my doctor yet. Is it "wetness" that is doing this? Is it getting too hot underneath the patch because of the Tegaderm? That is just my guess. Or maybe my chest has "had it," as that is the only place I put the patches on (as that is where my doctor told me to put it, and I'm a woman, so there isn't much room.) The patches don't stay on without the Tegadarm. Why are these burns happening??

Hello, Kare! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem you're having.

Actually, it sounds like you may be experiencing contact dermatitis and, if that is the case, it means there's something in the patch or the Tegaderm that is causing an allergic reaction. I experience similar symptoms, anytime I come in contact with latex or the antibacterial agent Triclosan. My husband is also allergic to latex, but he breaks out in horrible hives, so we've had to create a latex free home. It took me awhile to make the connection between my symptoms and latex, but once I tried latex free bandages, it stopped happening. It would be best to inform your doctor and have it checked out to ascertain what's causing your problem.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Has there been any change?

I use the patches, too, and have tried Tegaderm over them--but it can produce more heat which releases the drug more quickly--pores expand, heart rate increases, etc.

I have often taped just the edges with surgical tape, it's clear stuff that's easy to use. Getting the adhesive off after is a pain; there's a product for colostomy care--for where people really really need to make a good seal, if you know what I'm saying--that's called Skin-Prep-I think--which you clean with before putting the patch on. They also make stuff to remove the adhesive.
Also use different sites to give your skin a break.
