I have been weaning myself off Methadone! I was taking 10mgs 3 times a day. I am now down to less than one tablet a day and will continue until I can say goodby Methadone and I never want to see you again.

Now to my real problem. Last week my doctor gave me the Fentanyl 25 MCG/HR Patch MYL. I need something to help with the pain I still have although the Lyrica and Cymbalta have really helped. I did not when she gave the Fentanyl Patch to me that I would have to taper off and that it carried baggage of bad side affects. I have read the messages here and have decided not to use the Fentanyl. Thanks to everyone!

That is true, the Fentanyl is a very potent narcotic, over 80 times stronger than Morphine and it does carry the risk of severe side effects as well as addiction.

If you are trying to stay away from opiates, then it is probably a smart idea not to use it.

Please post back and let us know how you are doing!

Thank you for your reply!
I am weaning off Methadone so I ask my doctor for a pain pill to help me finish weaning off the Methadone. I told her the Lyrica and Cymbalta help a lot but I would continue to need a pain pill to take along with them. That is when she wrote the script for the Fentanyl. I didn't know what it was until I got home and read the leaflet that comes with the prescription.
I plan to call my doctor today and ask for something else. We'll see what happens.

Rabbit..If you think methadone is a nightmare, fentanyl is much worse I have never taken it, but read some of the horror stories here about it..That drug scares the Hell out of me..I am happy you chose to try something else..Is there a reason you wanted to quit the methadone? I am only asking because you aren't going to find anything that treats pain as good, and methadone doesn;'t dope most people up..When I was taking vicodin, I loved the feeling..When I take methadone I feel normal..If you get off of methadone, I would talk to your doctor about something other than narcotics..Your only other stronger narcotics are the fentanyl, oxycontin, morphine, stuff like that, Why would you want to stop a narcotic just to get on another one?? WD's are Hell no matter what..Even though you are not an addict, your body will go into WD;s I really can't say anything unless you tell us what it is you need to be pain free...Some people have great luck with the new antidepressents..How long have you been on methadone?? Be careful in whatever choice you make, and please let us know how you are feeling, ok??

I was prescried fentanyl whilst on chemo for Luekemia and fell in love with it but what a comedown ten times worse than methadone.I had a bulk supply and starting chewing up to five 50mgc a day and went cold from that.Green out of every oriffice and it goes on for weeks.Everbody thought I was back on full on chemo except my hair did not fall out.Due for my sript again I realy do not want to take this stuff the one week of intense pleasure is not worth the weeks of hell.I stay on my yacht to be away from everbody when I am like this but you have to be civil to others in the marina but they must think I am wierd one day happy and talkative the next rushing up to the toilet(cant use toilet in marina waters)and ignoring everbody and having a slightly green hue about me.How do I stop the deppression whilst withdrawing is bad I am starting to scare myself with some of my thoughts.Straight people do not understand they think because its prescibed it must be fine.Prescibed meds are the worst to come off.Poppyluv

Thank god you read these before you fell into the trap I'm in. I wS going to ask for methadone to help me wean off the fentanyl so thanks for your post I'm glad I didn't! Fentanyl is 100 x stronger than morphine I'm told so go figure, the addictive warnings along with what to expect with withdrawls should be much bigger on the label. I will say this though if u are elderly or have a terminal illness go for it slap them on because you won't have to
Worry about having to wean at some stage, it was a great pain reliever just not good for a young person trying to raise a family!

I know it seems like it's worth it but try and get rid of them, honestly I know it seems like you can't function normally without them but once they are out of your system you will be pleased for it truly. Take care

Pat....I often wonder, and I realize this is an old thread, but you seem to *cough* ALWAYS haunt other forums where people are on methadone and wanting to be off. Surprise you want to espouse your theory that everyone should be on MMT forever.... do you have stock in a maintenance facility?? This particular dude fantastically did not take the fentanyl the Dr. Gave him, whoa totally awesome and fantastical!!! Now you ignore the fact that he said no less than twice he cannot wait to be OFF OF Methadone.....and you espouse the evils of fentanyl ( props and smh as you admit you have no experience other than reading on internet). Why dud you then go in to shout from the rooftops Methadone forever.. and ever. I say awesome on all fronts, both for you and everyone off of mind altering chemicals. I got a great and hopeful feeling for someone getting clean, even knowing there could be a relapse in this old thread. Very much Integrity( literally the definition might want to commit that one to memory) shown by the OP. Great way to keep you honest by going to these boards.

I understand all to well what u r going thru. I had surgery and was left with neuropathic pain/neuropathy in my left arm hand and chest area. I also have RSD (reflex sympathy dystrophy). Chronic pain sucks. I then broke my shoulder and have 3 bulging thoracic discs. I was 90mg of methadone a day for 4 years before I took myself off it! It works but man functioning is horrible. I also take 600mg a day of Lyrica and muscle relaxers that really dont help.
I hope u r doing well now, its nice to know there are more of us out there.
good luck

Just curious. Why would you go off the methadone? And what are the reasons fentanyl is better?
