My daughter(aged 19) has just been advised to take a course of omeprazole for 4 weeks (one tab every morning) and every time she takes one she begins to feel sick and it brings on a headache and this morning said she was having pains in her leg? This is only day 2 of starting her presciption. Should I seek medical advice?

Hello, Maggie! How is she doing?

The FDA classifies this mediation as a proton pump inhibitor that's most commonly used to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach to help treat and prevent conditions, such as GERD, heartburn, ulcers and gastritis.

Its typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, flatulence and stomach pain.

Joint pain is also a possible side effect. If it's that severe, she should speak to her doctor as she may need to try a different medication.

Is there anything else I can help with?

i have used Omeprazole 20mg manufactured by Almus for 6 months with no problems, it did what i was told it would do, but then my pharmacy gave me Omeprazole manufactured by Sandoz, it was awful, bad headaches, digestive problems, painful pins and needles and dizziness, when i told my pharmacy they replaced the capsules with the original (Almus) ones and all went back to normal. The thing that suprised me the most was the pharmacy offering to replace the capsules with very little detail of what went wrong, at no cost to myself i had a full months prescription given to me
