False Positive On Ua For Hydromorphone

I am needing help....I regularly take Avinza and Oxycodone for back pain due to cronic pain ever sense my back surgery. I did a UA for my doctor and it came back positive for hydromorphone. I have now been refused any following treatment or pain meds! I Swear I Never took anything I wasnt suppose to so how could I have came up positive for hydromorphone? This has ruined my life really!

You need to pay close attention to your medication... I have gotten some of my perscriptions back from the pharmacy with the label saying one thing and the pills being something completely different.. The pharmacy couldve "accidentally" gave you a different pill from the label.. It happens often at the Walmart phaser near me.. If you have a smart phone download the webmd app there is a pill identifier on there and you can always check what type of pills you're recieveing.. Or simply go to webMD.. I don't know what you can do about getting back on the medication you are needing,. But I do know that all dr.'s are starting to test and pay close attention to their patients that are on narcotics.. Because they are being abused so much.. It is sad for the people who really need it. Keep your head up hun.. Try taking a yoga or Pilates to help stretch and strengthen your back muscles.. I'm not sure if you can in regards to your back surgery... But I'll be praying for you and please please please pay attention to the medication that the pharmacy is putting in your bottles..

Do you know what type of test the doctor uses? Is it one of the 'in office' instant read tests?

If so, then those types of tests are not certified and they are known to show false positives anywhere from 4 to 50% of the time and usually, the false positives are caused by a related medication. So, since you're taking narcotics, their metabolites may have caused a false positive for the other narcotic, Hydromorphone.

It's actually common to get false positives using urine drug testing. Big controversy. Theres been law suits. I'm very surprised your dr not aware of this issue! You should google "false positive drug screening". Best of luck!!!!

There are scholarly papers about morphine being converted to hydromorphone in the digestive tract by microbes (this is NOT related to human metabolism). The microbes cause: A) One of two OH groups has the H removed, with the remaining O double bonded to a C, B) A double bond between two C's is reduced to a single bond by the addition of two H's.

Several members of the Saccharomyces family have been shown to have such properties, as well as at least one member of the bacillus family (among others).
Members of both families are commonly available in OTC probiotics, although I have not found any research involving the specific strains in those products.

I've been taking a number of probiotics, as well as Movantik. After my dr. switched me from dilaudid to opanaIR, hydromorphone continued to be reported on GCMS urine tests. At first I thought it might be that Movantik was being reported as hydromorphone because of how close it's atructure is to dilaudid, but in subsequent reading I found out about cases where morphine was being transformed to hydromorphone by gut bacteria. I stopped taking both the probiotics and the Movantik, and a GCMS test was now negative for hydromorphone.

Since more than one variable was changed, I don't know whether the cause had been Movantik or one of the probiotic microbes, but I intend to find out if my dr. will go along with my going back to movantik, then one of the probiotics at a time to see when the test results change.

The probiotics I had been taking had been (alternately) CVS "100 billion" probiotics, "Digestive advantage" and Florastor.
