Nothing you've listed is known to cause false positives for any type of Barbiturates, including Phenobarbital.

Has your doctor had any ideas as to what may be causing it? Did you take anything else, even over the counter products?

Not true. Google NSAIDs (ibuprofen) and phenobarbital. Several stories from legitimate sources about them causing a false positive for barbiturates. I know because I am arguing with my doctor over this very thing right now. I take Adderall and am required to get drug tested. She said another positive test result for barbiturates (which I DO not take) means she can't refill my rx. Not sure what I'm going to do. The lab declined to look into it, as I've heard is the case in these situations. I ordered a home test to see if I could duplicate the results. Ask your md for a gc/ms test to confirm the results. I demanded that for the next test in a few weeks.

Doctor John Says:
Those medications will not cause you to test positive for Phenobarbital.

I am in Drug Court. I tested positive for phenobarbital and now have an open violation of probation pending in Court. I take only two medications, naproxen and cyclobenzadrine as prescribed. I am concerned as to the magnification studies conducted on the two medications for which I am taking. DO they have trace evidence of a barbiturate base?

Doctor John Says:
If the drug test wasn't really confirmed, I would make the laboratory send it out for LC/MS/MS confirmation. If the Phenobarbital still shows, IT IS phenobarbital.
Usually the only cross reactions are from EIA or FPIA and of course the home test kits which use an antibody marked gold substance. Cross reactions do not happen with LC/MS/MS.

I take phenobarbitol at 320mg nightly. As for now I must do weekly court ordered urine tests. I already take marijuana nightly with my meds when I go to bed. As for now I must stop the use of marijuana. My question is, will phenobarbitol show positive for marijuana even if I have stopped?

I take gas medicine, naproxen sodium, I have a little marijuana at night before bed, and lastly I have been using the vapor pen. Could these affect my test results?

I have a urine drug test in front of me and it says the person is positive for Phenobarbital The paper says "Quantitation Screen Limit" 10332 ng/mL
and "GCMS Limit" 80 ng/mL.. Could you tell me how much of this drug a person has to take to reach this number and what condition you would be in also.
Just what do these numbers tell you ?? And what would you say if I told you the
person NEVER took the drug?

You never know how some bodies will break down or react to certain medications. I personally had no clue what phenobarbital was and still really don't have the best idea of it. Years ago I had a drug test for a company I was really wanting to be hired on with. The night before I was so nervous I was sick. I was in no way worried about the test, it was actually the interview that came directly before. My stomach was doing flips and hurt so bad, which tends to happen when my nerves are on edge. Well, my husband was currently being tested and seen to find out whether he had IBS or Crohns and had been a recovering addict for 8 years at the time. They prescribed him this liquid medicine neither of us could pronounce and was told by the dr that it would only "numb your stomach in a way" and there was nothing to worry about as far as his recovery went. After hearing me complain and complain and almost decide I was to sick to go to my interview (and test depending on my interview) my husband told me I should take one tsp of his stomach medicine. There shouldn't be a problem with it, it made him a little dizzy but he was to take 2 tsp so he took it at bedtime if he could handle the uncomfortableness of it. Not thinking a thing about it, I took a little under a tsp before I laid down to go to sleep. I woke up the next day, went to my interview, they liked me so I went on to have my drug test. They sent all of them out to the lab at this company and told me to wait a couple days. The lab called me after a few days and told me that I had failed for some weird long unheard medication, which turned out to be phenobarbital. I told the man on the phone that I had no clue what that was. He asked me what all I was prescribed to and after I told him I mention that I took one tsp the night before of some of my husbands stomach medication. He asked a few questions and turns out that's what it was. He asked if I was sure I only took one tsp once and when I said yes he called me a liar and said my levels were way to high for just that. First if I had thought I was possibly being given something that would cause me to fail a test I would other wise pass, I would have to be a complete i**** to do it. Second, why would I imagine the dr would give my husband this medication that is apparently bad enough employers have to test for it if the dr knew all to well that my husband was a recovering addict. I lost out on a good job because of this dude not even wanting to listen. Yes, it's my own fault for taking something that was not prescribed to me. But does everyone need a prescription for Tylenol, Motrin, or Tums? And further more, I would have completely understood the disbelief and thoroughly checking my story had I failed for Something like cocaine, pain meds, nerve medicine, heroin, anything that would be common knowledge you just don't do! I would not have dreamed my husband was prescribed to such a bad medication that could have caused him his sobriety. But anyway, my point of starting share this story wasn't to point fingers or give y'all a life history of my husband and I? The point was that I literally only took LESS than a tsp of this crap ONE TIME and was told by the lab I pretty much drank a whole bottle of it....which would've probably killed me so.....???

Lola same thing happened to me just from handling Phenobarbital that I give my dog. He would spit it out I would pick it up put it back in his mouth. And I was traveling and was giving him one ever few hours not able to wash my hands and the next day too a per employment drug test and failed it. I explain what was going on but the lad didn't care and I didn't get the job. By law they have to give me another test but they can wait up to six months. But you have to send the company an email or letter telling them you don't agree with the results of the test. Each state is different as far as this law. Double check your state law.

To 12 Pat to the 72 yr old lady who tested positive for phenabarb. It's your primidone. I too just test positive and the lab said none of my meds would cause a false positive.I was frantic so I went to my pharmacy.the pharmacist printed out primidone description and clinical pharmacology for me. It states - primidone per se has anticonvulsant activity as do it's two metabolites, phenobarbital And phenylethymalonamide(Pema). Talk to your pharmacists and get a print out for your Dr. Hope he apologises to you

Phenobarbital came up in my son's system and he was in alcohol treatment. They gave him phenobarbital the 28th of september, took this test on october 20th and two tests were done because he knew he had not done it. They said in three days on the second one that it came back the same. What can he do? He is out in the cold for nothing. He was doing very very good with his treatment and the counseling and the meetings. What can cause this? He took alka-seltzer plus and ibuprofen. Please help me asap. I do not want my 47-year-old son in the cold for no reason. He never swears on his daughter and he swore to them and they called him a liar and the director said sorry nothing I can do. How can the retest come back? Also in 3 days, can I ask them to send it to another lab and pay for it? Please respond.
