Extreme Joint And Muscle Pain, Neck Stiffness, Tightness Of Chest While On Eliquis

Updated

The neck stiffness started while on Xarelto. After switching to Eliquis is the pain spread throughout my body. Into my back, my hips, my legs, the back of my knees, just throughout my whole body. I cannot sleep at night nor can I hardly move during the day. I am desperately looking for an alternative to any of these blood thinners. it seems like no one can really give me the correct combinations off supplements. I am open for any suggestions. thank you so very much!

Hello, Sam! How are you?

There really is no combination of supplements that can be guaranteed to work. Some are known to cause blood thinning, but no testing has been done to show that they are as effective as actual drugs used for that purpose.

Have you ever tried Warfarin/Coumadin? Many people manage to take it, without suffering such extreme side effects, but it does require more frequent INR testing.

Warfarin is what I'm taking, if you haven't tried it, maybe it would work for you also. The worse thing I've noticed is a crawly feeling in my legs that happens about 30 minutes after I take it, but only lasts a short time, weird? And I get cold easy, but that may be with all blood thinners, I've had no experience with any others, so don't know.

Thank you so much for your reply. I guess Warfarin would be my next option. Urghhhhh, I just wanted to be free of pharmaceutical drugs. Sigh

I just ran across your post. I'm new to this drug and have been feeling worse since taking it but didn't know why! I was actually wondering about able swelling but saw yours about your neck pain and increased back pain. I've actually had a very severe increase in my back pain and my neck hasn't bothered me in years like this I didn't know it could be related to this drug! I was just recently diagnosed with a fib and put on eliquis and have had headaches and able swelling but didn't know about these other effects. I wish there was another safer alternative.

Will not have these side effects with coumadin. I'm on Eliquis now and have bad neck pain , will tell my dr. to restart my Coumadin again.

I started on Warfarin but had such leg pains I asked to switch to something else. Also, per my doctor on Warfarin my blood clots had not gone away. Late April I will be taking a doplar test to determine whether or not the blood clots are gone. Hoping for the best. Eliquis has not caused me much discomfort yet.

I have been on Eliquis for over a year. A month after I started taking it, I also started having back and neck pain which I haven't had trouble with my back in over 15 years and never neck pain. Also I have a constant burning in my skin that makes me feel like I am on fire 24/7. I take gabapentin, but it puts me to sleep. I am also always tired have gained 15 pounds in that year and am very depressed. My doctor says it is not from the eliquis but I am not on any other new meds. They already tried me on xralto but I had side effects from that. Can anyone relate to the burning or weight gain problems?

I was experiencing chest pain and breathlessness and the doctors told me it had nothing to do with Xarelto, yet it is listed as an emergency listed side effect. From what I have read of your comment, Xarelto causes your side effects as well..
My chest pain has ceased as my GP changed me over to Pradaxa, no more chest pains 1 - 2 hours after taking Pradaxa, my leg and muscle pain seems to be clearing up and also the tired fatigued feeling seems to be slowly disappearing.

Not true! I get the breathlessness as well. And all sorts of pain everywhere else. I try to ignore them. But I think they just tell is its not the Xarelto because they are afraid to take us off it.

I'm 36F and got diagnosed with AFib six months ago. They put me on Xarelto first: so severely lightheaded I couldn't stay upright, severe diarrhea, and body wide muscle and joint pain so bad it hurt to walk and breathe. I switched to Eliquis since I'd been on warfarin before and couldn't tolerate any vitamin k or stay in the inr take for a year (due to blood clots from birth control). Eliquis joint pain was less, but I wake up every morning with calf pain. I developed arthritis in my right shoulder without injury. I have constant heart burn, lightly dizzy, and the muscle and joint pain gets worse every single day. Now I have tendinitis in my wrists and left shoulder, pain in my thighs and low back, and severe pain in my neck, jaw, and ears. I've been to see many doctors to rule out other causes. They're super protective of the drugs. I'm pursuing the Atriclip to get off of blood thinners for life (I can't do the Watchman device because I have a nickel allergy). I'm praying I qualify. These drugs are arguably worse than the original problem. If I didn't worry about strike, I wouldn't take them.

I had similar problems with both Eliquis and Xarelto so badly that I couldn't take it any more. The EP(cardiologist) suggested that I try Edoxaban which he found was better tolerated so in January I switched and so far most of the side effects of the xarelto and eliquis have gone, and no new ones have appeared. Maybe worth a try for you.

There is no easy answer here. I am a Pharmacist with 50+ years of experience. This muscle tightness in the neck and shoulders has been with me for the entire time I have been on blood thinners.....since mid-2016. I have AFIB, and blood thinners are a must. So I have been on Xarelto, then warfarin, and then Eliquis, and then back on Xarelto, which I am currently on. Eliquis was the worst one for me, since I could barely walk from leg weakness, etc. And previous to all these blood thinners, I went on treadmill 3-4 times a week for 50+ minutes with no problems. After the blood thinners, all three of them mentioned above, my treadmill sessions are now very limited. It appears that for some folks the muscle attack problem is really a problem.....period. It is not in YOUR HEAD, folks. It is my opinion that you CANNOT BLOCK THE PRODUCTION OF FIBRIN, which is what both Xarelto and Eliquis do to thin the blood, WITHOUT PAYING A PRICE.....side effects. Worse for some folks than others. Some seem to do OK. The drug companies involved, in my opinion, seem to be very evasive on this muscle problem. They list so many side effects that it is difficult to find the more important ones.....like this muscle problem. I do not have the answer. I would encourage all of you to file MDR adverse reaction reports to FDA on the internet. Trust me, doctors as a whole DO NOT report these issues......period. So for every report the drug companies receive, you must multiply that by 30 to 50 times. This is a world wide problem.....doctors tend to deny side effects and do not report them when they hear from patients.....THIS IS REALITY. Their stock answer is typically "IT IS IN YOUR HEAD"!!! Do not buy this explanation. I have no more wisdom on this, and am looking at a NATURAL APPROACH to thinning my blood. But be careful here. Doctors will have none of this approach, and there are good reasons for this hesitation. They want to be sure you have thin blood, but you pay a price. THIS IS REALITY, folks. These newer blood thinners like Eliquis and Xarelto are not MAGICAL by any means. I will let you know when I have more information, but this is a very DIFFICULT situation. You cannot go off these on your own.....dangerous.

Re: Lexie (# 14) Expand Referenced Message

Hair loss, weight gain. Have more pain all over. Who knows what causes it. Get no answer from doctors. Skin burns and sometimes itches which is almost bad as pain. I don’t think anybody knows for sure. We just keep taking these drugs!! Are they helping or hurting us?

I had no side effects with warfarin, but I can't take it anymore. I have a problem with blood clots after surgery, so I need a blood thinner like eliquis because it has a better clotting factor, or I would be back on Warfarin.

Re: Linda lu (# 7) Expand Referenced Message

Are you still taking Eliquis? I was put on it for Afib nearly two years ago. I also got a Pacemaker. I have been sick, though, since taking Eliquis. I have insomnia, muscle pain in my thighs, stiffness where I feel I cannot move easily. I also cannot reach in cabinet for a glass. Muscles are just tight. I am terribly fatigued. I was told to see a psychiatrist for insomnia. I cannot tolerate the side effects of their medications. I am currently seeing a naturopath. I do wonder if I will ever feel decent again. Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Lexie (# 12) Expand Referenced Message

I had a blood clot in Dec 2017 in lower right leg. Put on Eliquis. Started experiencing side effects within weeks. Very dry mouth and felt the back of my throat closing in. After several months started feeling soreness in all muscles and joints. My lower right leg would swell every day. I stopped taking Eliquis four months later. Most of the side effects have gone with the exception of sore muscles in forearms and upper arms. Have extreme tiredness. Is anyone experiencing this even after stopping the drug Eliquis?
