Extreme Side Effect

I took neurontin for approx 5 days - 100 mg for 2 days, 100 x 2 for 2 days and 100 x3 for 1 day. It was prescribed to me for post herpatic nerve pain related to shingles. In the middle of the night after my 5th day of medication, I woke to use to the bathroom. When I sat up in bed, I nearly fell over to the right side. After sitting for a while, I stood and walked, also staggering to the right side. I then had tingling and numbness in right arm, right side of face, lips. Went to ER and had CT Scan, MRI, echo, ekg, and neck vessel study, blood tests; and was admitted for observation. All tests negative. I thought I had a stroke. TIA cannot be 100% ruled-out, but I do not have any risk factors for stroke. I am 50 yrs old female, non-smoker, not overweight, have low -to-normal blood pressure, eat a proper diet and in good health overall. I believe thas was an extreme side effect of the neurontin. I also felt cloudy, dizzy, forgetful, and just not myself as soon as I started taking it. Needless to say, I stopped immediately. Has anyone else had this one-sided weakness, almost stroke-like symptom? Very frightened!

There is a small chance it could be from the Neurontin, but it is not really likely. What did they doctors at the hospital say?

The other effects you felt, such as not feeling yourself, dizziness and etc. are normal and can happen with most medications when you first start them, as your body adjusts to the new substance you are putting into it.


I am, however, glad that so far all your tests were negative.

I get this every day. I got it worse when I took neurontin.
Neurontin definitely can cause this, but is usually not as bad as the case described herein. If not neurontin, then I would suspect lack of proper sexual activity.
With another human. Not yourself.

I have taken Gabapentin off and on over the past few years, also Verapamil, and Amitripteline. They are similar meds...and with each I had side effects as you did. So I was told to start with low doses....not as intense side effects that way. After awhile I cut way
back on them because I felt "brain-less", like my head was either hollow inside, I was dizzy, my equilibrium was off and not able to function hardly at all. It was for the Neuralgia I have....plus migraines. But I have been thinking about taking one a day of the Gabapentin again, but no more than that for at least a few weeks...maybe if I go slower and take it gradually, it may eventually work for me. Sometimes I think doctors don't understand that everyone's body reacts differently and each person should take doses of certain meds differently....we know our own bodies, after all. My advice, don't take so much, so fast, even every other day to begin with...then maybe it will work for you. Good luck, God Bless!!!
