Extreme Salty Taste In Mouth For 20 Days!

Updated

I'm a 51 yr. old female who woke up on April 7, 2011, with an extremely salty taste in my mouth. When I tried to drink water to wash it out, it was like drinking salt gargle water. Nothing I eat or drink makes it go away. I can't stand to put anything in my mouth that is salty because the salt taste already in my mouth makes it almost unswallowable. Prior to that day, I have only 2 regular medications that I take daily: Lisinopril 40 mg( increased from 20 mg in mid November) for high BPas well as HCTZ 25 mg(been taking Lisinopril for 8 years) and 1mg of ropinorole(generic for Requip) for RLS (taking for almost 6 years). I also take black cohosh twice a day for hot flashes and night sweats(last menstrual cycle was Sept. 2010). On March 18, I started taking a 10 day prescription for NOHIST for a sinus inflammation, as well as FLONASE and a cough medicine. I had taken both the Flonase and cough medicine years previously, but had never had the NOHIST before. I finished the NOHIST and had no other symptoms. I had also been following a nutrition plan since mid- February losing 2-3 lbs. per week, eating lots of protein, and walking 2 miles 3-4 times a week on a treadmill at the gym. I was feeling good and my energy levels were good. I had been drinking 5-6 glasses of water daily and then after the salty taste, I could hardly drink one glass. I ended up with a UTI because of the lack of fluids that I wasn't able to drink, and then had to take Cipro for 3 days and drink (salty) cranberry juice. Yuck! I also had lab work done and it showed a positive on the A & A and also a positive on the IGG. With those results, I was referred to a rheumatologist (which could take months to get in to see) and my primary care doctor changed by BP med to Triamatrene 75 mg and HTCZ 50 mg. Its been 5 days on the new BP med with no change yet. My willpower to make myself drink and eat is slowly eroding. I know that if I don't keep drinking that I could end up seriously dehydrated and in the hospital, with who knows what other problems. My doctor doesn't want to see me for 6 weeks and I still don't know when I will get an appt. with the rheumatologist!!! I have searched everything I can think of on the internet, without any hope of what it could be. I am a teacher and mother of three daughters who need me to stay out of the hospital! I hope that you can come up with a possible cause or direction that will find answers and soon! So I challenge you to find an answer, and in the meantime, drink a glass of water with about 5 TBS. of salt in it and drink it, at least 3 times a day and also swish it around in your mouth continuously and then swallow it!!!! The only time you won't taste it is when you go to sleep. And its the first thing that you consciously are aware of the instant that you wake up! Then think about having to do this for at least the next 20 days and then maybe you will have an idea of how I am feeling!!!!! Desperate!!!!!!!!!

Are you still having this problem?

You should also be aware that you're more than likely not going to get a definitive answer from just the information you've provided in a post on the internet. To get a proper diagnosis and solution, you need an exam and possibly some medical tests.

There are several things that can cause people to experience a severe salty taste in their mouth.

Dehydration can do it, if you are already dehydrated and the reluctance to drink fluids, because of the taste in your mouth, just makes it worse.

https://www.medschat.com/wiki/Dehydration/

A disease of infection of the salivary glands can also cause it, as well as nutritional deficiencies and sinus infections.

https://www.medschat.com/wiki/Sinusitis/

Thus, there are many possibilities and only your doctor will be able to help you determine which one is causing it and what can be done to treat it.

Yes, it is day 32 of the constant salty taste I have in my mouth. I am scheduled to go back to my primary care doctor in about 4 wks to then see if after changing my blood pressure medicine, repeat the previous blood tests. I am also on the call list for a cancellation appt. for the rheumatologist since the first new patient isn't until Sept. I also have an ENT appt. next week. So I guess I'll probably have some more tests! I don't know how but I am making myself drink water ( salty as it tastes) and trying to eat things w/o salt on them . It's getting harder and harder! People don't think I look sick, and I don't complain much, so they forget! Emotionally, my strong wall of willpower has loose bricks each day that shake up my whole world! I try not to focus on the possible terrible things that might be causing it and keep telling myself that it's probably something simple to fix! And everyday I pray that God will make it go away! Will give an update when something changes! I believe in the power of prayer, so please pray that I know soon what is causing this and that it can be cured!

I've had this issue too. I believe it was from too much potassium. See if anything you are eating/taking has potassium in it.

Just wanted to give an update on my salty taste problem from April 7th. Well I went back to see my primary care doctor on June 8 and I am happy to report that my salty taste is gone. I started noticing a decrease in the severity of the salty taste about 2 weeks ago and it has steadily decreased daily. I am so happy to finally be able to drink water and it taste just like water!!!! My doctor was happy also that my blood pressure has stabilized much lower than it was even when I was on the lisinopril. I have also lost about 25 lbs. since February with about 10 more to go to achieve my goal weight. My doctor wants to see me again in 3 months and if all is still good with my BP, then I may be taken off of it entirely. Throughout this whole ordeal, I really relied on drinking my 2 Herbalife nutritionally healthy meal replacement shakes to keep me out of the hospital!!! I have felt good (other than the stress of the salt taste) and kept my energy level high! If it hadn't been for those products, I really think that I would have ended up in the hospital! Herbalife does not ever claim to heal people from their health issues, only that it provides the body with the nutrition it needs so that the body can take care of itself! I am so happy that through this horrible salty ordeal, that I have found a way of life and products that will keep me healthy for a lifetime!!

My husband is also taking Lisinopril for blood pressure. He also has a very salty taste in mouth... upon researching you are not to take potassium supplements or a sodium free salt which has potassium in it also.. he stopped taking his multi vitamins with potassium for only 2 days and the salty taste is starting to go away. We are in hopes that this will end the problem

I read your details with interest as I to am experiencing a salty mouth. This started 2 months ago and it is a horrible experience. I first went for a check up with my dentist but he could not come up with an answer and suggested I visit my G.P. if it continued. What I am also experiencing since this started to happen is I feel very light headed again this is an awful experience as I have always felt so well. I spoke with my G.P. who sent me off to have various blood tests, all came back o.k. I am now on a sinus spray but this has not help at all. I to have searched the internet but have not come up with any answers. Once I have finished my course of sinus spray I will be going back to my G.P. to ask her to arrange for me to see a specialist. I really do feel for you as I know exactly how you feel. The only way I can try and stop the taste of salt is eating mints or chewing gum which I never ever have done. If I can find an answer I will let you know.

a commercial of 'Herbalife shakes'.

I have a salty taste in my mouth which seems to have a buring irritating effect on my tongue. It's been bothering me now for the last few weeks and doesn't seem to be getting any better. I've seem and ENT and a few other doctors who seem to feel that the problem will eventually go away on it's own.

I too am experiencing this problem. It's been about a month for me. I can't eat correctly or can I drink anything. It is bothering me because I have had problems with dehydration and have been hospitalized because of it. Is there anyone out there that has found out the cause or a remedy? I am at the end of my rope!

I had sinus surgery and before was on a penicillin medication and also a month afterwards. The salty taste is terrible, no matter what I eat. I do take a lot of potassium pills for leg cramps so I am going to discontinue that but I have taken potassium for years. Maybe it will go away.

I also went last Thursday to see a ENT Specialist, he checked everything but could not find anything wrong with me and could not come up with answer so I am just hoping this will go away as quick as it came, it is a case now of just putting up with it.

The salty taste I was having was so extreme. Nothing tasted good to me. I read all the posts, hoping to find something natural to take for the nausea and salty taste. I had sinus surgery April 11, 2012 and about a month afterwards the salty taste started. I go to UCLA for medical care and called the surgeon and he said it could be a CSF leak (spinal leak) or an infection. I was returning in a couple of weeks and waited until to see the surgeon. Well, I had a severe infection. I started on heavy duty antibiotics and sinus rinses with antibiotics and salt. I can finally say the extreme salty taste is gone, just a trace of it lingers. I think what might be the cause of the salty taste has to be in the sinuses. I hope this information is helpful. I now can eat and taste the food. So relieved.

I have infrequently seen this. The etiologies in order of occurrence, are: 1 -toxicological
2-cancer in some part of the body
3-psychological
The most frequent toxins were found in natural substances such as herbs or vitamins. I suspect that these may have been adulterated or improperly stored.
There was no predominant cancer because of the relative rarity of this.
Psychological reasons were all found to be related to sex. (Isn't everything, though?)
We need a randomized controlled study with a larger sampling. I could not find one.
Hope this is useful to someone.

salt taste in the mouth is not psychological or sexual. omg. i know it's routine to use "psychological" as a default for a doctor's failure to find a real cause of a problem (treat the symptom, not the cause) but it's rather unintelligent to expect somebody to believe that BS. salt taste is psychological, and sexual?

Have had extreme salty taste for almost four years. Can no longer remember what real food tastes like. I was diagnosed with Sjogrens an autoimmune disease that attacks the saliva glands. Had biopies done on inner lower lip and results they are just lymphocytes. The answer I was given the extreme driness of my mouth make my brain interpret the driness as salt. No cure no relief. Usually takes 4-5 yrs for doctors to realize a patient has Sjogren. Went to National Conf. in San Diego Calf. this spring about 500 people there. It really alters the quality of life.

I know just how you feel. I had my tonsils out about 3 months ago and I started with just a horrible taste. Then it went salty. I am currently on an overseas holiday and it has completly ruined my trip. Everything is awful! I just had some fruit which did not taste too bad - for a few minutes, then back comes the salt. Disgusting! I believe it was caused by my medication. I let Endone dissove in my mouth. I could not swallow at that time. I aslo had another pain killer, but not sure of the name.I too asked my doctor and the ENT specialist. No answers, come back in 3 months!!!! I have tried lots of things to no avail. Can anyone help!!!!!!!

I know that this is an old thread, but I thought I'd post my experiences anyway in the hope that it may help someone who may land here (as I did, looking for a cure). About 2 months ago I started to experience a salty/acid taste in my mouth. It first started slowly and then became unbearable. No amount of teeth brushing, gargling with mouth wash and scrubbing my tongue would help. Long story short, after 2 months of this agony, it dawned on me that I had made a recent change in the brand of face wash that I was using. The new face wash contained salicylic acid and was deposited on my lips and entered my mouth as I licked my lips throughout the day and washed my face in the morning and at bedtime. As soon as I stopped using the new face wash, the salty/acid taste was gone within 2 to 3 days! Oh, the joy!!! I understand that everyone's situation may be different, but it might in some cases be something as simple as a new brand of lipstick, lip balm, or in my case, face wash, that is the root cause of this issue. Hope my experience helps someone. Take care.

I had the flu with sinus congestion. I used OTC meds and a saline nasal spray. The distilled baby water that I used in the humidifier was a year expired. Whatever, the sinus congestion became a sinus infection. And I knew this when I woke up to a SALTY TONGUE which caused nausea on an empty stomach.

I found that our well water was salty - Aquafina sodium-free. But even Aquafina wasn't really tolerable. I downed a cup of Aquafina and countered the salt taste by chasing with no-salt walnuts/pecans.

I ate lettuce sprinkled with olive oil; and days later was able to add a can of tuna in olive oil. Frozen peas have no salt (sprinkle with salt-free walnuts and olive oil).

So I was finding foods to eat based on what can be manufactured without salt but which I would normally buy/eat in a salted state: i.e., baking nuts vs Planters nuts.

TUMS Smoothie was good for traveling.

I was given Nystatin anti-fungal for oral thrush (result of the Post Nasal Drip of the sinus infection) - that didn't help. The next doctor did Mary's Magic Mouthwash for Candida on my tongue (contains Nystatin) - that didn't help. Oh, its better; lots better, actually; but it's not back to normal yet. And I really think its better due to the sinus infection being better. And I hadn't taken multi-vitamins in the past year - that's the first thing I corrected when the flu hit.

Weird things: Baked potato was awful; sweet potato with coconut oil was good. My go-to fast-food is a Whopper hamburger with lettuce and mayo; but I can't eat a bagel with cream cheese.

I am a 73 year old male who is type 2 diabetic and have just finished my third lot of antibiotics for a very nasty chest infection. I have been suffereing for 7 weeks with this cindition and have had chest xrays which came back clear. The last antibiotic I was taking was Dioxycline for 14 days and previous to that two lots of Clomoxclave for 7 days. I take the usaull statins, Piogliczide and Allupurinol for a Hiatus Hernia. Since the second batch of antibiotics I have had a very strong salty taste in my mouth along with an over production of phelm. Everything I taste is very salty and because of this I am not eating or drinking as I should. Even very sweet items taste salty and I cant get the taste and phelm from the back of my throat. Neither the Pharmacist, Practic Nurse or my Doctor can explain this problem and I am losing weight and becoming dehydrated due to this condition.

I to have been struggling with this for almost a month. In December all lab work and bp perfect. At the end of Dec I got this salty feeling and bp hit the roof. I was on a low does of amlodopine, so they doubled it, did not help so quad it. BP down for a few days but if I eat anything that is not a veg, the salt taste is unbelievable. BP so high had to go to er. So after repeat labs all good, just so thirsty and salty, the more salty the higher the bp. What could have happened and this is ruining me. I am an athlete who runs, bikes, swims and so out of character. 50 year old female

I have been taking homeopathic medicine for the past 18 months for a sore throat and allergies. During the end of April this year I had a fall and fractured my left ankle. I was in a cast for 6 weeks and obviously immobile for another two weeks. Indigestion developed due to the immobility and then I started experiencing a salty taste in my mouth. Though the problem is not severe, I feel sometimes irritated and trying my best in avoiding medication, particularly conventional drugs which I hate. Regularly, I chew a few holy basil leaves, cinnamon, a piece of clove, all natural. I am confident to contain the issue very soon with those natural remedies. Of course, never ignored consuming more water. Sufferers can try these...

I have been having the salty taste in mouth for a couple weeks now. Also having a strange smell. I have mentioned it to my GP, but no help was offered, and she didn't even act like I said anything. I took Lisiniprol many months ago, but haven't in ages. I do have some autoimmune disease, but it is undiagnosed right now. Have symptoms of lupus, Sjogrens, MS, and fibromyalgia. I'm taking supplements, but need to add zinc, according to earlier post. Magnesium, Vitamin D3, Calcium, and Vitamin K. Hopefully, it's not from any of these.

Cindy, I too have been experiencing this afflictions since Mothers Day, with NO ANSWERS!!! My nurse practitioner is baffled, ENT says swollen tongue, with burning tongue, no taste, extreme saltiness, he said it might come back might not, prescribed ant acid, I have lost 30lbs (the only silver lining) my dentist seems to be the most receptive so far, steroid paste for my tongue, just started, hoping for results. I DO know what you are feeling & experiencing, nobody else gets it or how it takes the joy out of living, but just so you know... you are not alone. There is always HOPE & POSITIVE THINKING. If you need to talk, feel free to get in touch.
