Eptoin And Breastfeeding

Updated

My sister delivered a baby boy 15 days ago by c-section. A week later she had seizures for the first time in her life. Her doctor prescribed her Eptoin 100 mg twice day. She was advised to continue breastfeeding her baby. Is it ok to breast feed after taking this tablet?? Will it affect her baby in any way??

Eptoin contains the active ingredient Phenytoin.
Information I've gathered on this topic states the following:

"Because of the low levels of phenytoin in breastmilk, amounts ingested by the infant are small and usually cause no difficulties in breastfed infants when used alone except for rare idiosyncratic reactions. Combination therapy with sedating anticonvulsants may result in infant sedation or withdrawal reactions."

Additional precautions note:

"Phenytoin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby."

"Women who are breastfeeding should avoid using phenytoin to limit the risk of exposing a nursing infant to this medication."

Based on the above information, I don't think it would be wise to breastfeed and take this medication. It would probably be best (in my honest opinion) if the infant had a store bought formula while the parent is taking this medication.

I hope this info helps!
