Due to weight gain and dwindle effect, my doctor switched my anti-depressant from Effexor XR. He told me to stop the Effexor XR immediately and start the Wellbutrin XL. He said to take the Wellbutrin XL for one week then start the Pristiq. FOr those of you who have stopped Effexor you probably know what I'm going to say next. It started with dizziness, rhythmic pulsating in my head, nausea and generally feeling like a slug. It's like my brain had a severe case of the flu. It was horrible. Now, I'm having with the dizziness and throbbing in my head, what feels like a hot flash but my face gets flushed and very hot. I feel as though I want to throw up. I called the doctor and stopped the Wellbutrin right away after about 3 days. I also called the pharmacist and he told me to try stopping the Wellbutrin and the side effects should be gone within 3-4 days. With that in mind i had a fear of bottoming out going cold turkey with no anti-depressant. Never the less, I stopped it all. The doc told me to start the Pristiq for a week then add the Wellbutrin XL. I know I'm rambling but that is part of the withdrawal symptoms, too. Has anyone out there stopped an anti-depressant and immediately started another? Also, has anyone had any luck switching from Effexor XR to Pristiq?

It wasn't with these same medications, but yes, I did switch abruptly from one antidepressant to another, I had no problems with that. My problems occured when I stopped taking it cold turkey.

There are, however, several other posts made by people who tried switching and ran into similar problems to those you did.

The thing you should be warned of, though, is that weight gain can be a side effect of most antidepressant medications.

You can read more on these medications here:

Does anyone else have experience with these specific medications?

I switche d from Effexor XR to Pristiq over a one week period and had no problems at all. I take Wellbutrin 300 mg during what would be my normal period cycle (am pre-menopausal) and it helps but I really think I need to take it all the time . .. am soooo crabby when I'm not taking the wellbutrin. Does anyone else take Pristiq and Wellbutrin daily?

Help! I didn't read the directions for the Wellbutrin XR and drank wine last night while on it. I read the bottle TOO LATE! I don't think I like this drug anyway, but do I dare stop it cold? I was originally on Pristiq

Wow! I just recently got switched from effexor to wellbutrin because of a 20 lb weight gain over 6 months and thought I was having a heart attack! I, too, had the dizziness, nausea, hot flashes, racing heart, no energy, aching body. They told me I had 2 choices, stop and go back to effexor or continue wth the effexor a few more days and my body would get acclimated to it. Three days later no more side effects and hoping the weight starts to fall off!

My Dr. switched me from 150 mg a day of Effexor xr to Pristiq after being on the Effexor for over 9 yrs. I have been on the Pristiq for three months and it has been terrible. The dizziness and off balanced feeling began after stopping the Effexor and getting on the Pristiq. I have also had muscle twitching all over my body and began getting more depressed. He put me on Brintellix three days ago and I am worse than ever. I am going to call him tomorrow and ask to be put back on the Effexor. The withdrawels from all these meds are pure hell!!
